“You’re a hero,” Robin declared.

“No,” Hendrix said softly.

“You saved a roomful of kids.”

“Not one.” The two words came on a croak and an unmistakable tear fell amongst the droplets from the rain.

“I’m sorry.” Robin reached for it but drew back. He remembered then that one of the gunmen—the high school junior—had killed his girlfriend. “I can’t shut up. Nerves.”

“We’d done this song in concert.” Hendrix nodded toward the music, nearly drowned out by the runoff from the roof.

“Oh.”
