Chapter 1The Disappearance

As the sun began to set over the sleepy town of Millfield, a young woman named Rachel Jones was making her way down Main Street. Rachel was a journalist for the local newspaper, The Millfield Times, and had just finished up her latest article. She was eager to get home and relax for the evening, but as she turned the corner onto Elm Street, she noticed something strange.

A dark figure was following her from across the street, staying just far enough behind her to avoid detection. Rachel's heart began to race as she quickened her pace, the sound of her footsteps echoing through the empty street. She turned down an alleyway, hoping to lose the figure, but as she did, a hand reached out and grabbed her shoulder.

Rachel spun around, ready to defend herself, but the figure had disappeared. She looked around frantically, but there was no one there. She took a deep breath and tried to calm down, chiding herself for being so jumpy. Perhaps it was just a trick of the light.

As Rachel continued down Elm Street, she couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching her. She felt exposed and vulnerable, like she was being hunted. She quickened her pace again, her heart pounding in her chest. Finally, she reached her apartment building and hurried inside.

As she made her way up the stairs to her apartment, Rachel's thoughts turned to the strange figure that had been following her. Who was it? And why were they following her? She couldn't shake the feeling that something terrible was about to happen.

When Rachel finally got inside her apartment, she poured herself a glass of water and sat down on her couch. She tried to shake the feeling of unease that had settled over her, but it wouldn't go away. Something was definitely wrong.

Just then, Rachel's phone rang. She jumped, startled, and answered it.

"Rachel? It's David," said the voice on the other end of the line.

David was Rachel's editor at The Millfield Times. She had been expecting his call, but she was still feeling shaken up from the strange encounter on Elm Street.

"What is it, David?" she asked, trying to keep the quiver out of her voice.

"We've got a new assignment for you," said David. "There's been a string of burglaries in town, and the police are keeping quiet about it. We want you to investigate and see what you can find out."

Rachel's heart sank. She had been hoping for a more exciting assignment, something that would take her out of town and into the big leagues. But she knew that this was her job, and she had to do it.

"Okay, David," she said. "I'll get on it right away."

As Rachel hung up the phone, she couldn't help but feel disappointed. But then she remembered the figure that had been following her, and the feeling of unease came flooding back.

Rachel decided to take a walk to clear her head. She slipped on her coat and stepped out into the chilly evening air. As she walked, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched.

She turned a corner and came face to face with the dark figure from earlier. This time, it didn't disappear. It stood there, staring at her with dark, hooded eyes.

Rachel tried to run, but the figure was too fast. It grabbed her by the arm and pulled her into a nearby alley. Rachel screamed, but no one was around to hear her.

The figure pinned her against the wall and whispered in her ear, "Don't go poking around where you don't belong, Rachel. Or you might not like what you find."

And with that, the figure vanished into the shadows, leaving Rachel alone and terrified in the floor.

Apocalypse Days: I Rule with Foresight and a Powerful Son

You’d think seeing the future would give me a head start on surviving the apocalypse. I had it all planned—until everything I knew shattered when my husband sacrificed himself to save me and our son. Now it’s just me, my three-year-old son Leo, and my cursed gift of foresight that only seems to kick in when it’s nearly too late. I’m doing my best to keep us safe, to find food, to make some kind of plan— “Mommy?” I glance down, trying to ignore the tug on my pant leg as I focus on our supplies. “Not now, Leo. Mommy’s thinking.” “Mommy!” I sigh and finally look down. My three-year-old is standing there, clutching… I blink. “Leo, where did you get a knife?” He shrugs, grinning like it’s the most natural thing in the world. My heart stutters. “No, really. Where did you find that?” I try not to laugh. I mean, he’s three. Maybe he just—found it somewhere? But the next day, it’s a water bottle. Then, a tiny flashlight, somehow with batteries still inside. I don’t even know what else; he’s pulling things out one by one with the pleased grin of a kid who’s just figured out his favorite game. Well, we may just survive this mess after all. Now, if only the universe could have spared me from him. I don’t even know his name, but I know his type: tall, broad, and annoyingly handsome, with an air of calm control that’s out of place in this chaos. Ex-military, if I had to guess, with a voice that’s just as infuriating as his smirk. The man has a habit of showing up at the worst—or best—possible times, with a gun at the ready and secrets buried as deep as those bright green eyes. I mean, he’s probably useful, but I’m trying to keep my eyes on the prize here: survival. For Leo and me. Because, foresight or no foresight, nothing is guaranteed in this new world—except the fact that people like him are trouble.
