Christopher Quinn remembers watching football with his entire family since he was a teenager. Living in East Berlin, three generations of his family were devoted Union Berlin fans. His grandfather even had a trial with Dynamo Berlin, the predecessor of Union Berlin, but the family's football talent was limited to amateur play.
When Quinn was eight years old, his speed made him unstoppable on the pitch, raising his family's expectations. At twelve, in 2002, he was selected for the Union Berlin Youth Team. Though the team was in the lower leagues, Quinn was on the path to professional football.
With his exceptional talent, he outshone his peers and joined the reserve team at eighteen. In professional football, joining a second-division reserve team was already a significant achievement. However, Quinn realized that only the top 1% of players would gain worldwide fame. The rest would remain unknown, their influence limited to local communities.
Players like Ribery, Vardy, Mahrez, and Diego Milito who rose to stardom were rare exceptions. Accepting his limited talent, Quinn relied on hard work to seize opportunities. He was always the first to arrive and the last to leave training.
At twenty-one, Quinn was selected for the Union Berlin first team and debuted in the Bundesliga. His family attended the match, and even Uncle Hans, the fan leader, toasted him in the bar afterward. He was officially part of the Iron League.
Union Berlin had fluctuated between the second and third divisions, and Quinn had almost lost hope of promotion. The Champions League seemed an impossible dream. But just as he resigned to his fate, a sixteen-year-old boy from the youth team joined the first team. The rest was history.
Union Berlin miraculously fought their way to the Bundesliga, led by Su Luo, who shocked the world with sixty league goals, breaking records and leading the team to the Bundesliga double. They even had a chance to play in the Champions League.
Despite rarely starting, Quinn didn't mind as long as the team needed him. He watched from the sidelines, ready to play whenever called upon. Sometimes he wondered if Su Luo was sent by God to save the team.
In a match against Manchester City, Quinn was anxious on the bench. As the team fell behind 1-3, he hated not being able to help. When they tied the score with two goals in one minute, Quinn jumped excitedly like a child.
Unexpectedly, in injury time, the head coach sent Quinn onto the pitch for his Champions League debut, replacing Mahrez. Nervous, his hands and feet felt numb. Fortunately, the younger captain, Su Luo, encouraged him, helping Quinn adapt to the game despite his inferiority to Manchester City's superstars.
After a near-miss goal, Quinn felt like digging a hole to hide. But Su Luo encouraged him again and even entrusted him with an important task in the last offensive play.
"Christopher, you'll lie in ambush near the penalty spot, waiting for the pass," Su Luo instructed.
"Wait, am I supposed to finish the final shot?" Quinn asked, incredulous.
"Yes, it's you!" Su Luo affirmed.
"But...my shooting is just average! And, Su, you're the core of the attack. Let me pass it to you!" Quinn protested.
"No..." Su Luo shook his head calmly. "I'll draw their fire. Believe in yourself! Everyone in our Iron Alliance is a hero. Christopher, you are a hero too."
With that, Su Luo turned to prepare for the play. Quinn stood stunned, his heart racing. But Su Luo's words gave him courage. He forced himself to calm down.
Forsberg took the corner, and Su Luo rushed forward. Quinn hesitated no longer, deliberately retreating a bit. Su Luo leaped high, executing a bicycle kick, drawing Sterling's attention. The audience watched Su Luo's performance.
But Su Luo didn't aim for the goal; his kick passed outward, catching everyone off guard except Quinn. Paredes, Kimmich, and others moved forward, taking the defenders with them, leaving Quinn unmarked.
The ball flew behind Quinn. Instinctively, he jumped into the air and executed a bicycle kick, hitting the ball.
Boom!
Quinn fell, disoriented, but he watched the ball hit the net. The stadium erupted with the loudest cheers he had ever heard. Teammates rushed over, shaking him wildly.
"You were amazing!" they shouted.
Union Berlin players piled on top of Quinn in celebration.
"F**k...I'm going to be crushed to death!" Quinn thought, almost seeing God from the weight of his ecstatic teammates.
In the stands, Uncle Hans and the others hugged the fans around them wildly.
"Stein, your son is incredible!!" one shouted.
"Hahaha, that brat got lucky, but the captain's pass was beautiful!" Stein laughed.
"And his bicycle kick was amazing too!" another added.
For the first time in 50 years, Stein Quinn felt so proud. The player who scored against Manchester City was his son! Maybe he wouldn't score many more wonderful goals in his life, and this was just a Champions League group stage, not a decisive knockout match. But at this moment, Quinn was the hero of the audience. He was the hero of the Iron League!
Meanwhile, Su Luo, the hero's "creator," was busy celebrating with his teammates. His plan had worked! This was even more thrilling than scoring a goal himself. There was an inexplicable sense of satisfaction in seeing Quinn succeed. Most importantly, they had won! They had triumphed in this difficult game!
"This clip will definitely go down in the history books of the Champions League!" Zhan Jun's celebration had made his voice hoarse.
"A magical bicycle kick relay! Su Luo assisted his teammate Quinn to complete the winning goal!"
"Union Berlin beat Manchester City 4-3 at home with a last-minute victory!" another commentator added excitedly.
"They have two consecutive victories now, temporarily leading the group ahead of Juventus on goal difference and taking the initiative to qualify!" He Wei was full of emotion in the CCTV 5 live broadcast room.
"Su Luo has been dominant in both Champions League games! He always finds that impossible chance in desperate situations!"
"This night belongs to Su Luo, Berlin, Quinn, and all those who never give up!" he continued.
East Berlin was sleepless that night. Headlines read:
"Captain from China orchestrates the best goal in the Champions League, bicycle kick relay defeats Manchester City!"
"Heroes of Berlin! 3 goals and 1 assist for a comeback of the century!"
"Manchester City falls to Berlin as Su Luo shines!"
"The hope of the Bundesliga, the Chinese star saves Germany!"
The goal battle between Union Berlin and Manchester City exploded across social networks. The next day, newspapers, media, and TV stations frantically reported on the shocking match. What started as a Champions League group stage match turned into a carnival feast for the entire internet. Perhaps only Manchester City fans and two unlucky English reporters were upset, their hard-written articles rendered useless by the unexpected outcome.
Who could have predicted Union Berlin would turn the tables?
In early autumn, East Berlin enjoyed a breezy and sunny noon. Uncle Hans, dazed from the excitement, almost tripped on the stairs. Aunt Hans was frying sausages in the kitchen, preparing lunch. Their daughter Anna sat quietly in front of the TV, switching channels out of boredom.
"Just past the second round of the UEFA Champions League group stage, Union Berlin staged an epic comeback..." one station reported.
"Su Luo once again became the savior of the team, with a hat trick to turn the tide, and finally, the bicycle kick relay completed the masterpiece..."
"...No matter how much money we spend, even if fans from all over the city donate together, we must keep this Chinese captain!"
"Now broadcasting sports news: Union Berlin defeated Manchester City 4-3 at home last night..."
Almost every TV station was covering the game. Half of Berlin was in a carnival! Through this competition, Su Luo had become the object of worship in every household in East Berlin. Quinn, who had been unknown for years, also spread throughout Europe overnight.
Recalling the bicycle kick relay goal, Uncle Hans felt a surge of excitement. Witnessing the goal in person, the shocking feeling might take months to subside!
Meanwhile, high above the city, Manchester City's plane had just taken off, heading back to England. Three days ago, Grealish had sat in the same position, overlooking Berlin below. Now, as he looked down, the last winning goal played repeatedly in his mind.
"Su Luo, they must have gone to a nightclub to celebrate yesterday, right?" he wondered aloud. "If I hadn't transferred, would it have been me scoring that bicycle kick?"
Regret washed over Grealish for the first time since his transfer. But there was no going back. Like the plane, he was moving away at 400 kilometers per hour.
"Back home, can we really beat him?" he mused.
It wasn't just Grealish; a shadow hung over all the Manchester City players. Su Luo's efforts had shaken the entire team.
