"I am only trying to protect her. I do not trust him," Nolan said, taking a step back to put some space between him and Leonard.

Leonard didn't like how Nolan was acting. Nolan was a good lawyer but it seemed he forgot all the sense he had with his work and was acting purely on jealousy. Leonard needed it to be studied how even the smartest person could act like a fool when it came to feelings. All sense and reasoning went out the window.

Nolan was acting like he was Scarlet's father. The person who had to do all the extra protecting. It also felt like Nolan was kind of scolding him for not being more involved in Scarlet's current relationship.

"You were never going to like whoever she got close to after the divorce. Jealousy is a powerful annoying little thing. You must have done something with that jealousy to get yourself fired. If you want to be hired again, don't do this again," Leonard advised Nolan.
