--- Emperor Siagu XVs POV ---
--- Before Lunchtime ---
It has been a few days since the event that occurred in the dungeon of this very mansion. Over the past few days, I have been quite occupied with my duties and responsibilities as the emperor of this nation. Fortunately, Christmas has arrived, granting me a respite of three days, commencing on the 24th and extending through the 26th of this month.
Despite the Christmas holiday providing an opportunity for a vacation, I have chosen not to partake in leisure, as there are pressing matters to address concerning negotiations with the Chinese and the Dutch. Prior to our plan to forcibly regain control of the Korean Peninsula from the Japanese, it is imperative that we secure the neutrality of the Chinese. Additionally, I am eager to commence formal negotiations with the Dutch regarding the establishment of a colony on the Island of Papua.
These responsibilities, coupled with recent events involving my younger son, have kept me diligently engaged in my duties, precluding me from dedicating an ample amount of time to my family. This is one of the sacrifices inherent in the role of an emperor, as our ancestors have admonished, "nation over family."
I currently find myself in my office at the Diliwata Estate, engrossed in reading and meticulous planning for the upcoming negotiations. Precision is paramount; failure is not an admissible outcome in this endeavour.
*Knock* *Knock* *Knock*
A persistent knocking sound reached my ears as I perused the information compiled by my Prime Minister.
"Who is it?" I inquired calmly while I continued to read the documents presented by Prime Minister Aguinaldo.
"His Majesty, King Gojong of Joseon, Your Imperial Majesty," a voice, aged yet firm, responded from behind the door. I recognized it as the voice of my personal eunuch, Senior Eunuch Isagani.
Eunuch Isagani's reply served as a reminder of my current intention to hold a discussion with King Gojong concerning our strategy for reclaiming the Korean Peninsula before the onset of the Joseon winter. This plan could not proceed without notifying King Gojong himself.
I proceeded to prepare myself by positioning myself in front of my desk, fully prepared to receive today's guest.
"Enter," I announced.
The door swung open, revealing King Gojong himself, clad in the traditional attire of Joseon known as Hanbok. I, too, was attired in our traditional garb called Sonmin. We converged in the middle of the room and exchanged a handshake.
"Gojong. (고종님)" I smilingly said towards him.
"Siagu. (시아귀)" He replied towards me.
Ever since our initial encounter in Seoul during my visit a few months ago, Gojong and I have grown close. Despite his seniority, we have chosen to address each other by our first names, a gesture that aims to dispel any discomfort and maintain the warmth of our friendship. This practice bears similarities to the way I address the current king of Siam.
The chamber's door was then sealed shut, guarded by Senior Eunuch Isagani, who stood sentinel within the room alongside other courtiers prepared to attend to us this afternoon.
"Shall we?" I suggested, gesturing to the couch across from my chosen seat, a small table serving as our only partition. Court ladies promptly served us tea and delectables, both of which Gojong and I took pleasure in.
"So, what prompts my presence here, Siagu? (Geuraeseo, nae-ga yeo-gie iss-neun iyu-ga mwo-ya, Si-agu?)" he inquired, pausing to sip the green tea that the court lady had thoughtfully prepared.
Much like my eldest son, he remained averse to superfluous conversations.
"Well, I wish to acquaint you with matters concerning your nation and yourself, (eum, neohante ne nara-wa ne jasin-e gwanhan geotdeul allyeojugo sipeo.)" I replied, pausing to sip my tea before continuing. "The Ministry of Defense and Prime Minister Aguinaldo, with my endorsement, have resolved to take action against the Japanese. Our objective is to reclaim the entire Korean Peninsula from their grip before the onset of next year's winter."
Gojong displayed a look of astonishment upon hearing my proclamation, an understandable reaction. While he was fervent about regaining control of his kingdom from his disobedient son and Japanese dominion, he was well aware of the formidable challenges this endeavour posed. Even I, at an earlier juncture, had contemplated such action, but recent developments in the peninsula had raised concerns for the safety of our people and the welfare of our nation.
"R-really?!" he exclaimed suddenly, to which I responded with a nod. Realizing his loss of composure, he subsequently composed himself and continued with a smile.
"My apologies. I simply did not anticipate you taking such swift action, Siagu. It has been only a few months since our exodus from the country. I had expected a lengthier delay before we could return home," he concluded with a smile.
His judgment proved correct. Only a few months had passed since he and his family hastily departed their homeland. Initially, his emotions upon arrival had been dominated by anger and frustration, a natural response to the humiliation he had endured. However, with each passing day, he found himself gradually coming to terms with the harsh reality.
Once, he had been the one fervently yearning for the swift reconquest of his homeland. Yet, it had become abundantly clear that certain issues necessitated meticulous planning, and the endeavour would demand a considerable stretch of time. Nevertheless, he could no longer afford to wait idly by, for with every passing moment, the might of the Japanese empire burgeoned.
I signalled to Senior Eunuch Isagani, instructing him to present to Gojong the envelope that Minister Li Hongyi of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had sent my way earlier.
"The original plan called for a lengthier preparation, but unforeseen circumstances forced us to expedite matters," I explained as Gojong received the envelope containing the information relayed by Minister Li Hongyi.
As Gojong perused the contents of the envelope, a range of emotions played across his countenance. Among them, shock and anger reigned supreme, as evidenced by the tremor in his hands. It appeared as though he might erupt in a fit of rage at any moment.
"Calm yourself, Gojong," I said in a composed manner, taking another sip of my tea.
I empathized with his anger, for within that envelope lay the information conveyed by our Ambassador, Ambassador Nguyễn Văn Phúc, to Minister Li Hongyi. The contents detailed the recent developments unfolding in the Korean Peninsula.
In the preceding weeks, Japanese forces had grown increasingly brutal and oppressive toward the people of Joseon. Ambassador Nguyễn Văn Phúc had borne witness to incidents of harassment and sexual exploitation inflicted upon the populace. Alas, the Joseon government had taken scant action in the face of these distressing occurrences, with the Northern Faction largely dominating its ranks.
This dire situation culminated in a mass uprising staged by the aggrieved people against the Japanese soldiers stationed in the peninsula. Initially, it had been a peaceful demonstration by the masses, but the Japanese had responded with lethal force, resulting in the tragic deaths of one to two thousand individuals during the massacre.
This grim turn of events had further enkindled the anger of the Southern Faction, prompting them to demand answers from the Japanese authorities on the day following the massacre. Instead of providing answers, however, the Japanese soldiers had commenced nocturnal raids on the homes of Southern Faction members, arresting those they suspected of involvement in the demonstration. By the following day, a gruesome display of fifty Southern Faction members hanging on the walls of the royal palace underscored the severity of the situation.
Ambassador Nguyễn Văn Phúc and our nation's diplomats had been ensnared in a precarious predicament for weeks on end within the peninsula. The Japanese soldiers had subjected them to harassment as well, placing the entire diplomatic contingent in grave danger.
We have already dispatched a telegraph message to the Japanese government, demanding their response to this matter. Nevertheless, we anticipate that they will likely not even acknowledge it.
"How can I possibly regain my composure after perusing this information? Especially when I am already aware of the incessant harassment my people endure at the hands of the Japanese. What's worse is the apparent inaction of my idiotic son!" he exclaimed, his anger palpable as he angrily tossed the envelope onto the table.
I remained silent, allowing him the time to collect himself from his outburst. The court ladies, meanwhile, began pouring him a cup of tea and tidying up the minor mess he had created.
Several minutes later, he had managed to calm down and was now in a more rational state for discussion.
"As you can discern, the Japanese have grown increasingly audacious, especially since we allowed them to evade consequences for their assault on our ship. But there is a limit to our patience; they must be reminded of their rightful place," I declared, placing my teacup on the table.
"This is precisely why my cabinet and I have resolved to assist you in the forcible reclamation of your nation from Japanese control next year. This is not only to safeguard our people and our nation's interests but also to reestablish a sense of justice."
"I understand your concerns, but why do you require my presence here? Your nation alone could defeat the Japanese, while I lack an army to champion my cause," he replied calmly, reclining on the couch.
"I acknowledge your absence of a military force. However, we need you to consolidate your power in your country and pacify your people. As a monarch, you comprehend the potency of public support. With their backing, a man can wield unparalleled influence in a nation. As their king, this duty falls squarely upon your shoulders," I said calmly. "I believe I need not expound further on this plan, Gojong. You are older and more experienced than I am when it comes to these matters. You are well aware of your role as the King of Joseon, correct?"
"I see... Yes, you need not elaborate further, Siagu. I fully grasp my responsibilities in this endeavour. You and your country shall spearhead the offensive, while I unify my kingdom into a cohesive nation by eradicating the root of this crisis," he coldly stated, his gaze fixed on the painting behind me—the painting depicting my coronation as the emperor of this nation.
"Excellent. To formalize and legitimize our alliance, I have decided to disclose our two nations' alliance to the public. This shall serve as an official proclamation to the world that Joseon and Butuan stand united as allies. It shall also grant your burgeoning nation a measure of peace and protection as you embark on the path of industrialization. I have already conferred with Siamese delegates regarding this matter. The alliance between Joseon and Butuan alone shall be made public," I calmly explained.
"I understand. So, when do you propose to make this announcement?" he inquired before taking a bite of the suman prepared by the court ladies.
"We shall make the announcement after the New Year's celebration. At that time, the alliance between our nations and our commitment to assist in the liberation of the Joseon Kingdom from your son's grasp shall be conveyed to the public through the Lobestar Tribune. Our delegates, alongside the Siamese representatives, are currently finalizing the draft of the alliance agreement," I said nonchalantly before rising from my seat and walking toward the window in my office.
"Hmm... Are you prepared, then? The announcement is bound to provoke the Japanese, Siagu. Their harassment of your people in the peninsula may intensify," he said, curious about my readiness.
"I am well aware that our announcement may provoke the Japanese, potentially increasing their mistreatment of my people within your territory. Nevertheless, I am quite confident that they will think twice before antagonizing a peaceful dragon," I said, observing my children playing with their cousins in the garden of the estate.
"I and my government can overlook some of the atrocities they have committed against us, especially with regard to the recent events in the peninsula, as it was considered but a minor harassment. However, let it be understood that our capacity for forgiveness is not boundless. I presume you have perused the current edition of the newspaper today. The populace is far from content with the Japanese; they yearn for retribution, their sentiments simmering just beneath the surface. A slight misstep by the Japanese and that general Masaharu Makabe could very well mark the culmination of their hubris," I articulated, while the reflection of my sardonic countenance glistened in the windowpane.
Silence once again reigned supreme in the chamber, as I continued to observe my progeny at play. Ainesh, since commencing his therapy with Dr Rizal, had been making gradual strides towards improvement—a propitious sign, for it would be a dire predicament to have a member of the imperial household deemed defective.
"Heh! That general?! I encountered him once, and I must say he strikes me as an imbecile! He epitomizes verbosity without substance," he taunted.
"Really?" I responded, my astonishment evident, causing me to redirect my gaze toward him as he lounged upon the settee.
"Hahahaha! If he is indeed an imbecile, then the reclamation of your homeland shall be a task of minimal complexity. Even the village fool could outwit their general in a game of tic-tac-toe! Victory, they say, comes with ease," I retorted with a laugh.
"Hmm... This brings to mind, Gojong, what course of action shall you pursue after you have reclaimed your rightful throne from your ungrateful offspring? Do you intend to adhere to the curse you once uttered?" I inquired composedly, my gaze unwavering.
After a brief interlude, during which we engaged in a silent contest of wills, he proceeded to respond to my query.
"Yes. Both of them stand accused of treason against the Kingdom and the Phoenix Throne, having conspired with the Japanese to attain their nefarious aims. I am a man of my word, Siagu. I shall uphold the curse I issued in person, delivering sentences to both of them, as well as those complicit in this conspiracy," he stated resolutely.
"Mh-Mmm," I concurred with a nod. "I can now discern why our friendship has flourished. Hahahaha!" I exclaimed, prompting him to join in my mirth as he comprehended my meaning.
"By the by, what are your intentions concerning your military forces?" I inquired, following our shared laughter.
"Hmmm... I am contemplating a reorganization to align them with contemporary military standards. I may even consider adopting the military structure and standards of your nation. Overhauling my kingdom's entire military apparatus presents a formidable challenge, yet one that I am left with no alternative but to undertake. It is imperative to do so to safeguard my nation from potential invaders and to avert a recurrence of past calamities," he elucidated before partaking in another suman.
"I understand. Would you be amenable to employing some of our soldiers to instruct your newly organized army? My troops are adept at acquainting soldiers with the prevailing standards in a short span," I offered, a grin playing upon my lips.
"Hahaha! I was just about to broach that very subject, but since you have made the offer, I shall gladly accept," he replied with a smile.
"Very well. I propose that the Butuanon Imperial Navy and the Butuanon Imperial Army assume the responsibility of training the soldiers of Joseon to meet contemporary standards, employing the latest weaponry and training methodologies presently in use within your nation. Additionally, while our soldiers are engaged in this training, I request that your country undertake the responsibility of safeguarding our sovereignty, during the gradual process of our industrialization," he solemnly concluded.
"As part of this arrangement, I shall permit a select contingent of your soldiers to be stationed in the peninsula, with the proviso that this continues until such time as one of our nations ceases to exist. Furthermore, I shall extend to your naval forces unrestricted access to the waters within my realm, albeit this privilege shall endure only until my nation is sufficiently equipped to safeguard our own maritime territories," he added.
I can feel it. A smile of contentment is forming upon my countenance after hearing Gojong's proclamation. This does not merely signify the consolidation of our friendship with Joseon; it also signifies that Joseon has acknowledged our nation as the overlord of the entire East and Southeast Asia. My aspirations are now slowly materializing.
"We have an agreement, King Gojong of Joseon," I declared, grinning toward him, to which he responded with a smile.
Our discourse concerning the strategy to reclaim the entire Korean peninsula from the Japanese persists, particularly concerning the deployment of our nation's soldiers to the peninsula. It is a strategy that holds great advantages, enabling us to exert control over the entire East and Southeast Asian region. As our conversation endures, we suddenly transition to the subject of the betrothal between our sons and daughters.
"I have observed that your daughter and my son have been in each other's company consistently for the past few days," he remarked with satisfaction, calmly sipping his tea.
"They have indeed grown quite close. I take no issue with it, as it will only further fortify their bond in the future. I believe your son is quite pleased with this arrangement, am I not correct?" I responded with a smile.
"Mh-Mmm… he has indeed relished their companionship. Even his mother has noticed Yeong's progress while residing here in your country. It appears that the match has been rather successful for both of them, wouldn't you agree?" He teased.
"Hahaha! Indeed. The lad has already exceeded my expectations as a suitable match for my daughter. During his months in our country with his people, he has displayed a keen interest in learning the language and culture, all to grow closer to my daughter and my two sons. Even my eldest has expressed a profound interest in aiding him in his studies of the Butuanon language," I shared with him, conveying my son's sentiments about his son.
My response elicited a satisfied smile from him before he resumed sipping his tea. Observing that our tea had run dry, the court ladies promptly began brewing a fresh batch of green tea for our consumption.
"Speaking of your eldest son, you are indeed fortunate as a father to have a son such as him, Siagu. He is a young man who exhibits remarkable competence, despite his tender age. He has displayed abilities that his peers have yet to manifest," he said admiringly while casting his gaze upon me.
A smile graced my countenance upon hearing his praises for my son.
"I concur. It seems the heavens have favoured our family with his presence. I once remarked to my younger brother that our empire's future was secure with my son as its emperor. His sister and brother, too, have brought me immense pride through their academic accomplishments," I responded, my laughter bubbling forth from a heart swelled with pride.
"Indeed, you are blessed with a wonderful child... I find myself envying you a second time for this, Siagu. A nation at peace and a son of such perfection... Sigh," he admitted enviously, drawing in a deep breath before continuing.
"Meanwhile, I am burdened with an unfilial son who has usurped my throne despite the affection I've showered upon him. And a child, whose status through his mother prevents him from inheriting the throne. Tsk! The sole solace I possess lies in my youngest child, whom I hope will prove as commendable as your eldest," he added, his head shaking in lamentation.
"This world is as cruel as it has been for us, Gojong. As we Christians have always said in times similar to your situation, 'Everything happens for a reason. God hath a plan for thee,'" I spoke calmly before proceeding. "Thine existence until this day hath a purpose. The heavens must have allowed thee to live until now to instruct thy son, Little Yeong, in the ways of a good leader, one who is worthy to uphold or even surpass thy legacy as the King of Joseon."
My rejoinder prompted Gojong to ponder for a moment, which was a promising beginning for him.
Throughout the preceding months, he has been rather stern with Little Yeong, imposing his desires upon him, and molding him into a stark departure from his elder sibling. Prince Sonjong's treachery must have wounded him profoundly, compelling him now to exert every effort on his youngest, so as to avert a fate akin to his older brother's. A tragedy in the making.
