The World as We Knew It

~ ZARA ~

The car ride back to my apartment was tense. The two men who'd been guarding Emory just… didn't talk. Except to ask me for my address. That worked for me, though. My head was spinning as I went back over everything she'd said, trying desperately to make sure I didn't forget anything.

The fact that I was a Dreamer, as Emory termed it, meant that I had to be from a Physicist bloodline.

David knew about and hated them, and was killing them behind the scenes. Hunting them down. Yet, he hadn't killed Emory.

But he had killed Ash… and watched me die. And she said that meant he'd think I was one of them now?

Could I even trust her to be telling that much truth? Was it all just a ruse to scare me, to stop me going back—because if the Physicists claimed that the way they sent people over who weren't Dreamers involved killing people, of course it would make anyone think twice.

Did I believe that? I wasn't sure.
