"Fine," Allen said in a casual tone. Instead of placing the box directly into Emma's hand, he walked over to the coffee table and set the box down, opening it to reveal the array of colorful pastries inside. He had anticipated a range of possible reactions from Emma, and he wasn't about to let her put up walls so easily.
As he expected, Emma barely glanced at the contents before resuming her haughty demeanor. "I thought it would be better than this," she said, her voice as icy as before. It was as if she wasn't interested in the pastries at all, more focused on maintaining her aloof façade.
Again, Allen held his internal cringe. But this time, Allen didn't intend to let it slide that easily. 'I need to teach her a bit,' he thought.
