CHAPTER 97
288 AC
It's been a month since I was declared Knight, and not much has happened during that time. We're still waiting for the Ironborns to take action, and our great king, during his stay in Winterfell, toured all the brothels, then when he got bored, he sent Jon Arryn to the King's Landing to rule while he set out for Westerlands. Around this time, the raven he sent must be about to reach Casterly Rock.
Our good king doesn't want a peaceful rule; he wants a bloody one. Who knew there was still a warrior thirsting for blood in that life full of debauchery.
POV Tywin Lannister
While I was doing the daily paperwork of Casterly Rock on my Solar, someone knocked on the door, and when I let it in, it was Maester Creylen.
"My lord, there is a raven from the king."
I took the parchment and broke the seal, and began to read. The message was from Good King himself, obviously from the message's wording that Jon Arryn didn't write it. It was incoherent and chaotic. The person who wrote it did not deign to write even by combining two sentences correctly. His handwriting was shaky and crooked. The author was either a drunkard or a paralyzed man. I'll lay out all my possessions that he's drunk.
The message vaguely said that the Ironborns were likely to launch an attack. What is this drunkard talking about. western Westeros is always under the danger of the Ironborns. What kind of weak information is this? It feels like he sent this just because he had to.
Is there really a chance of an attack, or is it going to be a raid, so they are reporting it? But this message doesn't feel good at all. It almost feels like he doesn't want us to take this message into account. I picked up the bell on the table and rang it. The door opened, and one of the servants entered.
"Yes, my lord?"
"Send someone to Gerion. I need him here right away."
"My lord, Lord Gerion is not in the castle."
"Where is he?"
"Just this morning, he went to Lannisport but did not indicate when he would return, my lord."
He and bastard daughter of his, why is he so stuck up with this child? she isn't even a noble-born bastard; she is a base born. I sat at my desk, wrote a message to Gerion, and ordered the butler to be sent immediately to Lannisport.
I'm not sure if the Ironborns are planning something huge or if it's just a raid, but it's good to be prepared. A patrol of part of the Lannister Fleet should be enough of a precaution for a few days until I find out what's going on.
POV MC
If I were the Ironborns, I would have attacked Westerlands and Reach in the next few days. One of the weakest moments of all regions is the days when winter ends, and spring begins. While everyone is tired of the harsh winter, a great lethargy descends when people's relief comes together with spring's arrival.
Just as I was thinking these things, I heard Poe's voice in my mind.
"Daddy, about 50 ships are coming this way from the open sea."
The war is beginning. I immediately connected to Poe and looked around. The land was behind me, but I should be coming close to my sight-sharing spell because the image came and went and was not as clear as usual.
I should have been about 6-7 km away from the coastline, and a few km in front of me was an island. This must be Lonely Light. This island was under the rule of House Farwynd, and it was the farthest north island of the iron islands. The ships were ironborn longships, and there were 52 of them.
Seven of them had changed direction and were heading in the direction of Flints Cliff. The remaining 45 continued to advance in the northerly direction. In 2-3 days, they can cross Cape Kraken, first to Flint's Finger, and then using Saltspear to Barrowton if the rivers are deep enough. When they get there, they'll most likely split into a few more groups to raid each coastal settlement and keep coming north until they reach Bear Island.
I immediately disconnected and started running towards the Lord's solar. Many people respected me now that I was a Knight and beat Smalljon Umber on the tourney. Of course, these were common soldiers.
Many of the minor nobles were trying to ostracize me as they did to my father and any commoner knight before him, but I didn't care what those little men thought of me. If my plans come true, I will have left Winterfell behind by the end of this war.
..................
I was in front of the Lord's solar, and the soldiers wouldn't let me in.
"I'm sorry, Sir Drasil, but the lord said he didn't want to be disturbed."
When I turned on my heat sight, I understood why. Lord Stark was inside dictating to Lady Stark. are they getting off knowing there are people outside the room? I shouted:
"MY LORD, I have urgent news. I need to speak to you immediately."
As soon as she heard my shout, Lady Stark immediately jumped to her feet and straightened herself, and the guards at the gate took up their swords.
"I hope you won't do something stupid like draw your swords."
When I said that, first, they looked at each other and gathered their courage, then readied themselves to draw their swords when a voice came from inside.
"Send him in."
Lady Stark was sitting in a corner armchair with her hair disheveled when I came in, and her face turned sour when she saw me. I greeted him.
"My Lady."
but she didn't respond and ignored me.
"What is so crucial that you disobey my orders and disturb me?"
"Around two days' time, 45 ironborn longships will pass the Cape Kraken."
As soon as he heard this, the Lord jumped up.
"Did you get a message?"
"Yes."
"Let me see."
I had written on parchment with writing like chicken scratch full of typos so he would think that someone who barely knows how to write and read is writing a note.
"How sure are you of this information?"
"I'm as sure as I've seen it myself."
He called a butler and asked him to gather the household guards.
