Chapter 100 - The true horror of the first world war

Three hours passed and I was still resting my assault rifle on the sandbag that acted as my cover, pointing it exclusively at the tunnels where the grounders would at any moment be charging through... One quick glance around and I could see how nervous my fellow defenders were and who would blame them? We were sent down here with no chance of retreating to face god knows how many grounders. If I could I would have comforted these people, but sadly, I wasn't sure how to comfort them, since even I was kind of worried about this fight. The narrow tunnels alongside the little space we had to retreat made this place the perfect last line of defense for use and the worst place to attack for the grounders and yet, if we were to fall, the bunker would simply wield the doors shut, forcing the grounder to wait.

The more time passes, the louder my instincts were screaming at me that something was going to happen and just as I was about to shake those ominous feelings away, a loud roar echoed in the tunnels. For many that roar wasn't too familiar, but for someone who had fought against the raptors and their ferocious attacks, I'd rather not fight them in such an enclosed area, especially with more than half of the troops that defend the tunnel being nothing more than greenhorns.

One of the guards that were in the most forward position noticed something that was quickly closing the distance between them and just as he pointed his flashlight at the incoming blob of noise... His eyes widen upon noticing what it was. "Velociraptors!"

The man shouts, just as the first three lines open fire almost instantly at the dinosaurs.

Almost all of the dinosaurs that were in the front were turned into a bloody mess and while the raptors weren't exactly humans in terms of brain activity, they were smarter than most of their extinct kind. As soon as they saw their brethren slaughtered mercilessly by the meat bags, the remaining velociraptors turned away and dashed out of the tunnel, hopefully towards the grounders.

Thankfully, not all of the people that were here to defend the entrance were unblooded, otherwise, that group of velociraptors would have torn right through them, making the grounder's attack one of the easiest they would have had. Not long after the first wave run away, we heard the not-so-quiet grounders as they made their way toward the wall of guns. As soon as the first ones were slightly visible, I was surprised to see that most if not all of them wore crappy-looking makeshift armor rather than the usual armor the warriors wore, and yet, that didn't stop them from letting out a battle cry before charging madly towards us. Sadly for them, their "armor" didn't have any bullet-resistant properties to stop our 5.56×45mm bullets.

I immediately opened fire upon the grounders that seemed to have no idea what awaited them as they walk past the corner. One of my bullets hit a grounder in the eye sending the man to the ground, however that didn't stop his friends from charging forward. The other guards didn't waste their time as well and soon, a barrage of bullets reduced the unfortunate grounders to nothing more than a mass of human watering cans. As disgusting and unsettling as it looked, this is what war does to those unfortunate enough to face a barrage of bullets, not even the biggest dinosaur alive could have survived this kind of concentrated firepower.

Most of the grounders didn't even know how they died, instead just dropping and adding to the increasing pile of bodies lying in the tunnel, unfortunately for us, the amassing number of dead grounders created some sort of human shield that gave the grounders a tiny bit of protection against our bullets. Soon enough, some of the guards got annoyed with the occasional arrows being shot at them, and in a moment of complete clarity, they threw a couple of grenades at the piles of bodies, hoping that the explosion would be strong enough to destroy the grounder human wall. The grenades exploded almost as soon as they were thrown at the piles, killing a few grounders, but most importantly destroying the wall that protected them. The grounder's scream of agony and terror seemed to quell the coming warriors slightly, which to be fair was probably the smartest thing their leader did, at least until now.

To their defense, I'd rather run away than try to charge through this unreachable wall of guns, after all, it was a suicidal attempt to breach this kind of defense, no matter how you look at it, especially when you use medieval weapons. However, if the grounders were known for something was their stubbornness and sooner or later they would charge again and again until they either are out of men to throw at the meat grinder or we have no bullets to shoot at them.

Out of nowhere the voice of a man, resonate in the entire gallery, making most of the guards scoff at his words.

"Skykru, prepare yourselves! None of you will ever get to see the sun! We will kill you, then slaughter everyone left in that place until all of your people are either dead or enslaved!"

The nothing for almost half an hour. The bloody, destroyed, and mutilated bodies still lay in a pile in the tunnel. Even if these bodies were a clear physiological detergent, especially when neither the grounder nor we wanted to risk going there and getting rid of the bodies.

When we heard the grounders again, we knew that another attack was imminent, however, never would have imagined that we would get an upgrade to our weaponry. Just as the grounders' shadows were seen at the corner of the tunnel, from within the bunker came a group of guards dragging after them a weapon that no one had seen before. The weapon itself didn't look anything too strange or spectacular, however, its rather simplistic design was probably the thing that made the weapon interesting.

"What is that?"

"You are Leon, right? Raven told us to give you this. It's a device that shot a jet of fire. Its range is not that good, however, in the tunnels, it would a godly weapon. Sadly we only have two reservoirs for it so use it carefully."

Not wasting any more time, I quickly put the heavy backpack-like reservoir on my back before grabbing the weapon itself. Despite being heavier than any other weapon I used before, it wasn't a bad thing. As the first grounders were shot by the guards, I walked towards the first line, weapon at the ready, and when I was sure that it would hit I fired, unleashing a jet of fire onto the unsuspecting grounders.

The sight was something no one would forget in their entire life. A dozen of grounders were lit up by my flames as they tried to extinguish themselves. Their cries of agony, as well as the lifeless bodies of their peers, put fear in both of our troops and for a moment, no one knew what to do, other than let those poor souls burn alive. Some of the guards started to feel sorry for the poor fools forced to charge through here, moreover now that we got this nightmarish weapon, but after a few seconds, they continue to fire at the enemy, despite the continued cries of agony and mercy.

The grounder's charge halted completely after the second use of this flamethrower. No warrior wanted to burn alive while achieving nothing, not even when their leader was shouting at me to charge. Most would rather be killed by a sword than experience this kind of death. The sound and smoke from the flamethrower made the grounder taste what fear was, sadly for them their leader was either a madman or simply didn't care about their lives as more and more grounders were dying by the second in a never-ending assault.
