Josie was still having a hard time wrapping her head around this. How could Everett switch his allegiance so quickly? Just because he was stuck here and had no hope of going home? 

Although she recalled what he said on Thanksgiving. About how he wasn't stuck with her. 

He had said a lot of nice things all in one go then but she thought they were aimed at Josephine. They couldn't have been because that happened after she reread How To Tame A Duke. 

So did her birthday. He knew that it was her real one and that was why he wanted to celebrate it! He did that specifically to make her happy. Her heart fluttered even as she wanted to cry. None of this was fair. 

Everett had been through a lot. His loyalty was to whoever was nice to him and let him have new experiences that were better than his old ones.
