“You think he hired someone to get rid of his sister while he had an alibi and then stumbled on us pretending to be concerned about her disappearance?”

Gemma shrugged.

“Like I said, I wouldn’t put it past him.”

Daniel knew that Jamie would have let Gemma know how Nick came to find him and Daniel. But while it could have been plausible for anyone else, this didn’t wash with Daniel.

“Captain, coming upon us was a fluke. The only people who knew where we would be were Jamie and myself. He couldn’t have expected to come to where we were looking for a cop.”

“Don’t underestimate that boy.” Gemma’s eyes narrowed. “Where were you and Detective Pell when Horscroft was looking, anyway?”

Daniel took a deep breath. Gemma knew about his drug problem from the past, and she loved to make comments about it. It was like being back in high school with her, at times.

“NA meeting. Detective Pell came along as emotional support.”
