“Yes. I decided when I was nine years old that I was going to rescue you from your family, just as you asked me to.”

“Huh? I think you need to explain that.”

Putting one knee on the bench, Evan turned to face Danny. “You saved my life. You were my hero. “

A small hint of a smile curved Danny’s lips. “Really? ‘Cause I’m not exactly the hero type.”

“To me, you are.” Hope tingled through Evan. There was a chance for them. “When my father was still alive, I used to be dragged to the family reunions held here in the summer.”

“I don’t remember seeing you here.”

“No, you wouldn’t—you were too old to hang out with the little kids. Plus I spent most of the time trying very hard to be invisible.”

Danny leaned back and seemed to settle in, ready to listen.
