I woke up in a cold plastic seat. I would guess it should feel hard, but it didn't feel that hard to me. I blinked again and looked around, my breath taken away. I know that vampires had better sight, but this was such a difference. I felt like I was blind before now.
I could see so much detail, the bits of dust floating in the air, the fibres on people's clothing and even in this low light, I could see with crystal clear clarity. I could hear every person taking a breath, every whisper and god; the smells were so confusing, so many of them. Different fruits and scents I knew from twilight that people have their own scent that is unique to them and them alone, but in this closed environment, I could tell who was which.
Looking down, I saw that I was wearing jeans with what looked like running shoes, a skin-tight black shirt, one of my favourites that were soft and warm and a thin waterproof jacket. All in, that wasn't bad stuff to wear down to the ground. Looking at my body, I noticed that I am shorter than I was in my past life. I hope that wasn't going to upset my balance, but vampires were meant to have perfect balance, so here is hoping.
Grabbing my hair, I noticed it was still black. If anything, it looked to be a much deeper and darker black than in my old life, but that could just be my new sight letting me see that. I wasn't sure if I was stronger, but seeing as I am on the dropship, I had no reason to think that I wasn't. Trying some magic was tempting but explaining a floating ball of light seemed impossible.
"Err", a groan next to me broke me out of my thoughts. I noticed it was still there, ready to continue at any time, though. I looked to my left and saw Clarke. She seemed to be coming around. I remember that her mum drugged her to get her on the ship with no fuss. Just past Clarke, I saw Wells. I wasn't sure what to make of him. He died so quickly that I never really made my mind up about him. In the flashbacks, he seemed a good friend and even took the blame for turning her dad in so she wouldn't hate her mum.
I wasn't sure when exactly he died. It was after the panther I remember something about a boar, but being a minor character, I just sort of forgot about him, to be fair. Looking over at him.
"Hey, nice to see you aboard, S.S.Earth," I said to him, being caught off guard by my new voice but not disliking it.
He looked back at me. "S.S.Earth?" he questioned, confused.
"Ya, S.S is a SpaceShip, and we are going to earth, so S.S.Earth," I told him, seeing him not getting it, but that could just be due to the situation.
"I should have asked my dad to paint it on the ship then", He joked.
"Next time, next time," I said back to him. "It looks like she is about to wake up," I said, nodding to Clarke.
I saw Clarke start to look around, knowing that they will start to argue in a minute when she catches up. In the meantime, I was happy to look around with my new sight of what the earth would look like now for me. I couldn't wait. Forgetting the dangers of the earth for a short while, but with my perks, I should be fine.
"Welcome back", I heard Wells say to Clarke. I looked to my left to watch. I saw them stare at each other. I would guess Clarkes was more of a glare, but I couldn't be sure.
"Look-" Wells tried to begin, but Clarke cut him off.
"Wells, what the hell are you here?" Clarke spat out she still hated him.
"When I found out they were sending prisoners to the ground, I got myself arrested," He responded with steel in his voice. He really was a good friend when he knew that he could die on the way down, let alone if they made it to the ground.
"I came for you," Wells said optimistically. Hoping she would forgive him. I knew she would eventually, but that was after he was already dead. I would try and keep him alive, but I wasn't sure when he even died.
Suddenly the ship rocked and made a loud crashing and banging sound which was unbelievably loud to my new vampire hearing. The downside to enhanced senses number 1. The screams were nearly as bad. I could hear every person on different levels. Good. I needed some earplugs.
"What the hell was that?" Clarke asked, with concern and maybe a little scared.
"That if I had to guess was the atmosphere," I said to her. "Nice to meet you. I'm Violet, and I thought I should introduce myself in case we all die in a minute." I finished with a smile.
"Clarke", she replied, not looking as reassured as I hoped.
A loud eclectic whine went through the ship before the lights came on. The screens turned on, and Chancellor Thelonius Jaha's face appeared.
"Prisoners of the Ark," He began. "Hear me now. You've been given a second chance, and as your Chancellor, it is my hope that you see this as not just a chance for you, but a chance for all of us, indeed for mankind itself. We have no idea what is waiting for you down there. If the odds of survival were better, we would have sent others, but your crimes have made you expendable."
No pressure then, and if you really wanted this to succeed, would you not put a few adults on here to watch over the kids.
"Your dad is a dick Wells," I heard a boy shout from across the room. With my new sense of hearing, I could tell it was the boy on the 3rd row in the middle seat with short brown hair. Most of the others were laughing. I did have to ask if Jaha wanted everyone to hate his son as he was doing a good job at it.
"Your dad could have phrased that better," I said to him with a little smile. He gave a small one back but didn't say anything.
"Those crimes will be forgiven, and your records wiped clean." he continued. "The drop site has been carefully picked. Before the last war, Mount Weather was a military base built within a mountain." the screen started to cut out at this point. Ya, Mount Weather sounds like a good idea if it wasn't for the mountain men, and we won't land there as they will make the dropship crash which is for the best.
"It was to be stocked with enough nonperishables to sustain three-hundred people for up to two years. Yes, I'm sure they left the doors open when the bombs dropped 100 years ago. I know this video was more so they could collect data as we explored the earth to see if it was really safe. A dick thing to do, really.
While Jaha's recording was trying to inform the prisoners of the situation, which I knew was pointless as to why would these kids listen to them, if they did, they wouldn't have been in the skybox. Finn Collins floated across the dropship doing backflips. The crowd cheered him on with shouts of 'Go Finn' and Woohoos'. I couldn't help but think what an idiot he doesn't know when the shoots will deploy.
Finn leaned back and coolly said to Wells, "Check it out. Your dad got to float me after all."
"You should strap in before the parachutes deploy," Wells warned him.
"He has got a point you don't know when the chutes are going to deploy. If you're out of your seat when it's going to happen, you could die before seeing the ground that would suck. I agreed with Wells.
I saw two other prisoners that were now removing their harnesses. I heard Clarke telling them to stay put.
"She right, you know, don't you want to at least see the ground" I shouted at them, hoping they would stay in their seats. They didn't. They got out and started to float around. "Get back in your seat", I tried again. Meanwhile, I could still hear the Chancellor continue to stress how important it was to get the supplies. I knew that we couldn't go for many reasons, not that I could say why as it was future knowledge.
"Hey," Finn noticed Clarke. "You're the traitor who's been in solitary for a year."
"You're the idiot who wasted a month of oxygen on an illegal spacewalk," Clarke retorted deadpan. Knowing why her dad was killed and the state of the ark, I could see that would piss her off.
"But it was fun," he said in a patronizing tone. "I'm Finn."
Seconds later, the chutes popped, and the three people out of their seats were thrown around the dropship like ragdolls. The lights went out, and circuits sparked and started letting out bands and high pitched wines. People started to scream, hurting my hearing, and the three people were thrown into the walls with loud bangs.
"Finn, are you okay?" Clarke yelled, concerned. I felt bad for the heartbreak he was going to cause her in the future.
Everyone continued to scream and shout. I sat back in my seat, knowing we were going to be fine and if not, I would most likely live anyway.
"Retrorockets ought to have fired by now," Wells said to the two of us, noticing that they hadn't yet. I still thought he was mostly talking to Clarke as he didn't really know me.
"Ok," Clarke said with a slightly panicked tone. "Everything on this ship is a hundred years old, right? Just give it a second." The ship continued to crash. I thought it could be even older than that but decided not to say anything.
"Clarke, there's something I have to tell you," Wells yelled to Clarke. "I'm sorry I got your father arrested." My ears were not taking this well; he was keeping to the story to the very end. Well, what he thinks is the very end.
"Don't you talk about my father," Clarke shot back angrily.
"Please", he tried again. "I can't die knowing you hate me." Well, maybe you shouldn't have taken the blame, and even if you tell her the truth now, she won't believe it.
"They didn't arrest my father, Wells," Clarke said angrily. "They executed him. I do hate you" The ship continued to crash. Clarke looked away from Wells with revulsion. I wanted to comfort him, but knowing I was a stranger, I decided not to say anything.
A few seconds later, the thrusters on the dropship engaged to fight against our rapid descent. More people started to shout and scream. Ugh, please shut up. You are killing my hearing. I will be deaf by the time we get to earth at this rate. The lights flickered, and people continued to scream. I tried to cover my ears, but it didn't help at all. After a loud crash, the ship came to a stop, and the machines shut down.
Everyone was breathing heavily. The light continued to flicker. Everyone on the dropship was looking around in either relief or amazement that they had survived.
"Who wants to go again?" I asked to break the tension. I should hear some people start laughing.
"Listen," Someone said. If I remember right, it should be Monty. "No machine hum." Ah yes, that must be a new experience for the people on the dropship, but not me.
Jasper let out a starstruck, "Woah. That is a first." Ya for you, maybe I thought.
I saw everyone looking around, not sure what to do. It looks like no one wanted to be the first, something humans are well known for. Ahh, I can call people humans now that I am not human. I unbuckled my harness and stood up, stretching my legs. They didn't need it or anything but act human. Everyone else followed my example.
I saw Clarke jump up out of her seat and run over to Finn, "Finn, is he breathing?" she asked, referring to one of the two boys that followed him out of his seat to copy him.
"The outer door is on the lower level. Let's go," I heard someone shout.
"No, we can't just open the doors," she said to no one in particular before running off with me following after her.
"Hey, just back it up", I heard what I guess was Bellamy said to the crowd. I really didn't like him. He may love his sister but other than that, he causes so many problems, and so many people die when they didn't need to due to him.
"STOP," I heard Clarke shout from the ladder as we descended it, pushing to the front with me following behind. I hadn't hurt anyone pushing past them yet. She was talking to Bellamy. "The air could be toxic", she warned in a softer tone hoping to convince people. I wasn't sure what her plan was if we didn't open the door eat each other.
I knew that Bellamy was going to cut her off, so I beat him to it.
"Yes, the air could be toxic, but the only other option is to stay in here till we run out of water and food. While knowing the ark, I would be surprised if they gave us enough food for everyone on the ship for one day." I said
"So if we have to pick starvation, dehydration or radiation poisoning, at least the radiation will be faster. Not to mention that we have lived in space all-out life, and space is full of radiation, so we will most likely be okay. Or at least I will, I think.
"She has a point," Bellamy said with a shrug. Great, the asshole agrees with me, lucky me.
I could hear someone making their way through the crowd. I knew it was Octavia and people whispering about 'the girl under the floor' was another dead giveaway. I couldn't imagine how crappy that would be. It would have driven me mad.
"Bellamy?" asked the girl as she got to the front.
"My god. Look how big you are," Bellamy said in shock at seeing his little sister in what must have been a year, maybe longer. They embraced it was quite the heartwarming scene.
"What the hell are you wearing?" She asked. That wouldn't have been my first question, but each to their own. "A guard's uniform?" She questioned further.
"I borrowed it to get on the dropship", Bellamy replied, somewhat true if you ignore that he shot someone and the uniform is left lying about. "Someone has to keep an eye on you. They smiled, and both hugged again.
"Where's your wristband?" Clarke asked Bellamy. I looked at my wrist and saw that I didn't have one either. I looked at her "Wristband?" I asked her. She looked at my wrists, noticing I didn't have one. She went to ask something, but Octavia cut her off.
"Do you mind?" Octavia turned to Clarke. "I haven't seen my brother in a year."
It took all of a second for someone to say, "No one has a brother." Which was a stupid thing to say, Octavia was well known and almost famous on the arc as the oldest person to hide.
The shouting of the crowd broke me from my reverie. They were taking verbal jabs at Octavia. She lunged at the first person she saw, but Bellamy held her back.
"Let's give them something else to remember you by," he reassured her.
"Yeah," Octavia said, still frustrated. "Like what?"
"How about being the first person on the ground in a hundred years," Bellamy answered. Well, if you ignore the grounders and mountain men and reapers, then ya I guess that is somewhat true.
Bellamy turned to the lever that opened the door and pulled down dramatically. With a rush of smoke, the door came down. The prisoners stared in shock. It was their first time seeing the Earth on the surface level. To me, it was truly like seeing it for the first time again. All of the detail and difference in colours that humans couldn't notice took my breath away. Did I even need to breathe? I caught myself thinking?
Octavia walked tentatively forward. Stopping just outside the door, she took a deep breath in and out before walking forward again. She stopped at the edge of the ramp before the ground, hesitating briefly. She hopped down with a slight breath of excitement. She looked to the sky in disbelief. Then, that breath of excitement turned into a goddamn hurricane. Everyone rushed out of the dropship to explore this new strange world. I thought about saying it could be dangerous who knows what around but decided not to.
"We're back bitches!" Octavia shouted at the top of her lungs.
I watched the criminals run around like chickens with their heads cut off, so excited to be on earth. I watched as Clarke walked through the crowd, making her way to a clear vantage point where she would be able to see Mount Weather. I decided to follow her. I knew Finn would be following as well, but I really didn't like him.
She stood at the edge of the cliff holding a map. Her hair hung back in a loose braid. I could see why Lexa would fall for her. I walked up beside her, noticing that Finn wasn't anywhere nearby.
"Well, I don't know about you, but this doesn't look like Mount Weather. I said she jumped. Noticing me for the first time, she kept staring at me for a while, which I put down to the whole vampire thing.
"Yep," She said, going back to her serious mode. She pointed to a peak. "You see that peak over there. I looked over to where she was pointing, and no doubt, could see it far better than she could. I wasn't sure how far it was though I would guess a good 25 miles maybe.
"Yep, it's hard to miss it. It's like a big mountain or something. I said, smiling at her. I saw her roll her eyes and give one back.
"Well, that is Mount Weather," She said, not sure how she knew it was, but she did in the show.
"Ya, I guess so. Good job, there isn't a radiation-soaked forest between us and our next meal." I said, shrugging. "It's an easy mistake to make, not like mountains are massive or anything."
We both looked at the mountain for a time. Neither of us said anything. I am sure she was thinking about what to do about food and water. I was thinking about how to test out my new speed and strength, and magic. I didn't want to do it in a way that people would notice. When people go to try to walk to Mount Weather, I will tag along. I hear fin walk up to us.
"Why so serious, Princess," Finn said happily, "It's not like we died in a fiery explosion," she said happily.
"Well, we could all be slowly dying to the radiation in the air, or the water could kill us when we drink it, the rain could be acidic and melt us, or any of the wild animals could eat us one by one," I said, noticing they looked a little afraid of what I said.
"Or you know none of that could happen," I said "think positive." I finished with a smile.
"Try telling that to the two guys who followed you out of their seats," Clarke said, annoyed.
"You don't like to be called princess, do you princess," Finn said back in a smug tone.
"You see that peak over there. That is Mount Weather. As Violet here said, there isn't a radiation-soaked forest between us and our next meal." Finn looked back at the peak, a little worried now that the situation was sinking in.
I stood next to Clarke as she was doing something with a map working out how far away from Mount Weather we were.
"I heard someone walk up behind us and saw Clarke turn to look.
"We got problems. The communication system is dead," Wells said. "I went to the roof. A dozen panels are missing. Heat fried the wires."
"Well," Clarke returned. "All that matters right now is getting to Mount Weather." Ya, if you want to be eaten by the reapers or cut up by the mountain men.
Clarke pointed to her map, "See? Look. This is us." She pointed to a spot on the map. "This," she used a straightedge to draw a line to Mount Weather. "This is where we need to get to if we want to survive." Clarke looked at us pointedly.
"Where'd you learn to do that?" Wells asked. What a stupid question if it wasn't in earth-class then her father taught her.
Clarke didn't answer.
"Your father," Wells surmised. Yep, that won't make her hate you even more.
"Cool a map," Jasper said. "Can I get a bar in this town? I will buy you a beer,'' he said to Clarke and me.
Wells pushed him away. "You mind."
"Whoa," Jasper said, and he walked back.
"Hey, hey, hey," I heard someone say, knowing it was John Murphy who turned out to be an okay person in the end, but at the start, he was a dick. "hands off of him. He's with us." he continued looking for a fight with Wells over his dad being floated, if I remember right.
"Relax." Wells said, trying to calm everyone down. "We're just trying to figure out where we are." Not that they were going to listen to him. He is Jaha's son, and he is hated by almost everyone here.
Bellamy jumped in "we're on the ground. That is not good enough for you?" Ah, here is the part he makes himself not only look stupid but make people hate him. They will think he is trying to be his dad and be in charge.
"We need to find Mount Weather. You heard my father's message," he said, trying to make people see his side. I knew the moment he said my father he had lost any support. " That has to be our priority." he finished hoping people would follow what his dad said.
"Screw your father." Octavia jumped in. It makes sense he was going to kill her for something she had no power over, like being born. "What, you think you're in charge here, you and your two little princesses?" she said in a mocking tone.
"Do you think we care who's in charge?" Clarke jumped in. "We need to get to Mount Weather not because the Chancellor said so, but because the longer we wait, the hungrier we'll get
and the harder it'll be." She said to everyone it would make sense if not for the mountain men.
I jumped in hate watching on the sidelines. "How long do you think we'll last without those supplies? After 3 days without water, people will start dying.
"We're looking at a 20-mile trek, ok?" Clarke said to everyone who had gathered around now. "So if we want to get there before dark, we need to leave now." I wasn't sure we would be able to get there before dark. After all, people walk an average of about 3 mph, and it's not like the people on the ark are used to long-distance walking. I thought it would take maybe 10h to walk there and to bring stuff back even longer.
"I got a better idea," Bellamy said, trying to take control. I bet I could vamp speed over to him and kill him before he could even finish the sentence.
"You three go, find it for us. Let the privileged do the hard work for a change." He said, playing up to the crowd.
"Yeah. Yeah. Yeah." The crowd shouted, agreeing with him.
"You are not very bright, are you?" I asked, wanting to cut him down to size. "Let's say we go. What reason would we walk back? We could just keep everything to ourselves. And even if we didn't, it isn't possible for three people to bring enough food and water back for 98 people." I finished seeing some people agreeing with me or at least not wanting to miss out on food.
"She is right. We all have to go," Wells said. Thank god I didn't want them to come, or the mountain men would get them and having him say it's a good idea will put everyone off.
"Look at this, everybody... the Chancellor of Earth," John said, pushing Wells. Thank you so much, John, for getting everyone to not go to the mountain.
"Think that's funny?" Wells said, walking up to John. Who tripped him up and pushed him down to the ground.
"Uh !"
"Wells", Clarke said, trying to walk to him, but some guy stopped her.
Some people called out, "Yeah. Come on. Get him."
"No, but that was." He said as Wells got up limping, bringing his arms up to fight.
"What are you gonna do now, Wells?" someone shouted out.
Murphy fainted towards him, causing Wells to flinch. I started to step forward, but someone stopped me. I wanted to push him away but didn't want to harm or even kill him. I hadn't tried anything but walking yet, which I noticed was still quite a bit faster than humans.
Murphy motioned to him. "Come on then" Before he could, I watch Finn jump down and do some stupid spin and land on the ground, which seemed to impress everyone.
Murphy backed up for some reason. "Kid's got one leg. How about you wait till it's a fair fight?" Ya, a fair fight, how stupid. No fight is ever fair.
"Hey, spacewalker, rescue me next." said walking up to Finn, which got some people to chuckle.
Clarke walked towards wells with me following. Bellamy walked up to Octavia and gave him a look. "What? He's cute." Octavia said.
"He's a criminal," Bellamy said. The hypocrite he is a criminal as well. He hid his sister and shot Jaha. Some people here just stole food or water to live; they didn't try to kill someone.
"They're all criminals," Octavia said, pointing at everyone.
"Look, O. I came down here to protect you," Bellamy said. He is a good brother but a terrible person overall who only cares about himself and his sister.
"I don't need protection," Octavia said. "I have been locked up one way or another all my life." No doubt feeling suffocated. "I am done following orders. I need to have fun, Bell. I need to just do something crazy just because I can, and no one, including you, is gonna stop me." Octavia said, excited to be free at last.
"I can't stay with them, O." looking worried. Ya, well, had you not shot Jaha, that wouldn't be a problem.
"Now, what are you talking about?" Octavia asked tiredly, rolling her eyes.
I saw Bellamy look around and pull Octavia somewhere he didn't think people would hear."I did something, ok, to get on the dropship, something that they will kill me for when they come down." Trying to convey how important it was, she listens.
"I can't say what it is just yet, but you have to trust me," Bellamy said and after a pause. "You still trust me, don't you?" He asked Octavia.
"Yeah, of course," She replied.
Looking back at Clarke, she was checking Wells's ankle. I knew it was twisted or sprained due to the TV show. She tried to move it and caused Wells to gasp in pain.
"So Mount Weather. When do we leave?" Finn asked as he walked up with his hands in his jacket pocket.
"Right now," Clarke said, standing up. "We'll be back tomorrow with food," Clarke said, turning to Wells.
"How are the two of you going to carry enough food for 100?" Wells asked.
"Actually, three of us" I jumped in. I need to practice not killing people with a push and magic while I am at it.
Finn turned around and grabbed Jasper and Monty, and pulled them to us. "The five of us. Can we go now?" With both Jasper and Monty looking surprised and confused.
Octavia jumped in. "Sounds like a party. Make it 6." looking excited to see more of the world.
"Hey, what the hell are you doing?" Bellamy asked, looking concerned. I knew that she would hate him trying to control her.
"Going for a walk," She said back, rolling her eyes and swinging her arms.
Clarke notices Finn's wristband. "Hey, were you trying to take this off?" She asked before turning to me, "That reminds me, where is yours?"
Giving her a confused look, "How would I know? The guards came into my cell and knocked me out with some drug, and I woke up on the ship." I said, not really sure why I didn't have one but glad it would have given away that I wasn't human to the ark.
"Yeah. So?" He said in a smug tone as if it was no big problem.
"So this wristband transmits your vital signs to The Ark." Clarke said to him, expecting him to get it. When he did, she finished, "Take it off, and they'll think you're dead."
"Should I care?" Finn said with a shrug. I saw Bellamy taking an interest in the subject.
"Well, I don't know. Do you want the people you love to think you're dead?" She said with a scoff. "Do you want them to follow you down here in two months? Because they won't if
they think we're dying." Clarke finished. I saw that had Bellamy full attention, and I could see a plan being formed in his head of how to get away with what he did. I saw Finn look down, releasing what he nearly did. I remember he still has a girlfriend, Raven, on the ark still.
"Okay. Now let's go," Clarke said, walking over to Wells. "You shouldn't have come here, Wells." and started to walk off.
"Go on," Bellamy said to Octavia, giving her a nod. She kissed on the cheek and followed Clarke. I knew the seed had been planted in Bellamy's head.
Octavia walked up to Clarke and me. "Before you get any ideas, Finn is mine." She said to us,
"Before you get any ideas, I don't care," Clarke said back.
"Not my type," I said, giving her a shrug. "Have at him I couldn't care less" as we continued to walk in the forest.
Everything was so vibrant I was just behind Clarke at the front. I picked up a loose stone and gave it a small squeeze, and it was crushed in my hands. Guess it's a good thing I didn't push that boy then. I picked up more. I need to learn how much force to use. If I got into a fight which I planned on doing when the whole we do whatever we want phase Bellamy tries, I don't actually want to kill anyone.
I could hear the rest of them talking behind me, but this was much more important. Even though I wasn't actively listening, I still knew what was being said. Vampire senses are amazing. The forest had smells that I would never have known before I could smell all the different trees and the grass and moss. The dirt and flowers, along with that, I would guess, are animals and people.
"Hey, guys, would you try to keep up?" Clarke said from just in front of me.
"Come on, Clarke, Violet, how do you block all this out?" Finn asked after noticing I wasn't looking around like them.
"Well, it's simple. I wonder, "why haven't we seen any animals?" She asked us, "Maybe it's because there are none. Maybe we've already been exposed to enough radiation to kill us. Sure is pretty, though. Come on." She finished turning to walk on.
"Well, they could have been scared off when we crash-landed. It was loud, and I wouldn't want to be near it when it came down," I said, throwing an idea out there. I knew we would see a deer in a few moments. I could hear it breathing and moving around up ahead and a smell that I guessed to be deer.
"Clarke looked back at me. "Ya maybe." "Hopefully", She whispered to herself.
We continued to walk on. I heard Octavia say, "Someone should slip her some poison Sumac", and heard Jasper snort.
I was still experimenting with the rocks to fix the strength problem. I had gotten better. Instead of turning it to sand now, I was just breaking them apart. I watched Clarke kneel down and motion to the people behind us to come up quickly.
I looked at the deer, and you wouldn't be able to tell it had two heads at all unless it looked at you. Everyone crouched down. I was surprised I was sure being a vampire would spook it.
I heard Finn whisper, "No animals, huh?" excited at seeing an animal.
I whispered to them, "Do you think it's safe to eat?" some of them gave me disbelieving looks. "What? We are going to eat animals at some point."
Finn walked forward and stepped on a stick, causing it to snap. The deer looked up and towards us, and I heard everyone gasp and take a step back. The deer ran off as everyone was taking breaths.
"So still edible or not what you think," I asked.
"You first," Octavia said.
As we were walking down a hill, Finn asked everyone. "Hey, you know what I'd like to know? Why send us down today after 97 years? What changed?."
Well, the air was running out for one, and I'm sure the food was as well, I thought as I continued on with my rock.
"Who cares? I'm just glad they did. I woke up rotting in a cell, and now I'm spinning in a forest." She said as she twirled around a tree.
Monty jumped in. "Maybe they found something on a satellite, you know, like an old weather satellite or…."
Clarke cut him off. "It wasn't a satellite. The Ark is dying. At the current population level, there are roughly 3 months left of life support, maybe 4 now that we're gone." shocking everyone. Causing them to turn around to look at her.
"So that was the secret they locked you up to keep, why they kept you in solitary and floated your old man," Finn asked with very little tact. I couldn't help but roll my eyes at that.
"My father was the engineer who discovered the flaw. He thought the people had a right to know." Clarke said I could hear the sadness in her voice and the anger at the people who did it.
"The council disagreed. My mother disagreed. They were afraid it would cause a panic. We were gonna go public, anyway, when Wells…." She said with more anger in her tone.
"What, turned in your dad?" Finn asked. Well dur that is why she mentioned him.
"Anyway, the guard showed up before we could. That's why today. That's why it was worth the risk. Even if we all die, at least they bought themselves more time." Clarke finished up.
"Well, it's not like they are taking the risk that why none of them came down," I said bitterly. The Ark could have asked a few adults to come down and watch over the kids. I'm sure the parents would have done so in a heartbeat.
"They're gonna kill more people, aren't they?" Montey asked.
"Na," I replied. "Well, I mean not yet at least, but maybe in 2 weeks ya probably", I added on.
"Good. After what they did to me, I say, ``float them all." Octavia said, rightfully angry at how she was treated.
"You don't mean that." I said to her, "They will start with the kids as the lack of oxygen will affect them the fastest." I explained.
"We have to warn them," Finn said ah, I forgot at the start he was all for saving everyone.
"How do we do that smoke signals," I asked sarcastically.
"Oh damn," I heard Jasper say. I looked where she was looking and heard the other boys whistle and laugh.
Octavia was stipping down. I know she was planning on jumping into a river. Her body wasn't bad, but lack of food on the ark left most people skinny. Clarke no doubt has a better body as her class of people had more food being the elite class. I could see that everyone was gobsmacked at what Octavia was doing had they never seen a semi-naked girl before.
"Octavia, What are you doing?" Clarke asked, walking towards her as she walked to the edge of the rocks. She turned around and gave a smile and jumped off. A second later we heard a splash. Everyone looked at each other excited. It makes sense they have never seen a large amount of water in one place other than looking down at the earth.
They all ran to the edge where Octavia jumped from. "Octavia we can't swim" Montey called out. Seeing that just Octavia's head was above water. Speak for yourself, I can swim just fine. Maybe I should offer to teach them later on.
"I know, but we can stand." She said as she stood up and started to laugh.
"Wait. There's not supposed to be a river here" Clarke said, confused.
"Well all of the nukes must have changed the landscape and the water ended flowing down here or maybe the dam overflowed due to the machines or something," I said to her shrugging.
"Well, there is. So take off your damn clothes." Finn said in what I guess was meant to be a sexy way that came across quite creepy to me.
Looking across the river I could see something moving towards us but I wasn't sure that the other had seen it yet. "Anyone else see that," I asked pointing to the moving thing in the water.
"Octavia, get out of the water." Jasper said, "Get out of the water now!!" he said more desperately. The snake-like animal that I was sure was an eel at some point lunged and grabbed Octavia. She let out a scream as it pulled her under the water and away from us.
"Octavia!" Jasper shouted and everyone looked shellshocked at what just happened. Not really sure what to do at all. A few seconds passed before Octavia surfaced screaming and splashing about. I had decided to save her as no one else knew how to swim and she was out in the deeper area now. And the eel may be afraid of me due to being part vampire if not it won't be able to hurt me anyway.
"What the hell is that?" Asked Montey as if we would know. "We have to help her"
What are you going to do?" Jasper asked Finn who was taking off his clothes.
He took a step forward, "Try not to get eaten," he replied.
"No wait" Clarke stopped him. "If we distract it, it might let her go. Help me." She said looking for some rocks. I used this chance to dive off the rocks and into the water I had put a bit too much power into the jump but nothing that would scream was not human.
I heard the rock fall into the water at the same time and saw the eel move off towards the rock. Either ignoring me or not wanting to get too close. I swam as fast as I could to Octavia forgetting the fact no one else knew how to swim. I grabbed onto Octavia as she was splashing about.
"Get to the shore now!!!" Shouted Jasper I wanted to roll my eyes at that what else would we do swim in deep idiot. It was harder than I thought to pull Octavia to the shore. I had managed to get her to the shallows so I could stand and pick her up before getting onto dry land.
The other 4 ran over to us with Octavia still gasping and taking short panicked breaths. Clarke ripped the bottom of Octavia's shirt and wrapped it around the top of her thigh to slow the bleeding.
Octavia reached over and hugged me "Thank you... Thank you." I could hear Clarke saying she was going to be okay. It seems like mutant eels have teeth who knew.
"Note to self… Next time save the girl" Montey said, giving me a pat on my shoulder causing everyone to start laughing. Looking up at the sky I saw that it was getting dark soon. I wasn't sure what they all did at night as it wasn't shown in the TV show. I guess sleeping in a tree is a good idea away from predators. I know sometime tonight when it starts raining Bellamy starts whatever the hell we want BS.
I will take advantage of that so everyone sees what a bad idea that is and undermines him as he really is a bad leader who often doesn't either think or care what his actions will do like the night raid with pike where he killed so many grounds who were there to protect him.
I looked at everyone. "It is going to be nighttime soon. We need to find shelter somewhere protected against the rain in case it does rain."
"Where we can only hope it doesn't rain and sit in the forest," Clarke said. I looked around and saw that the trees were not really an option. I had yet to see any grounders or hear any of them but it is only day one and it would take them a few days to decide what to do.
Nighttime fell really quick. And I didn't feel tired at all so maybe I didn't need to sleep which would be good at the moment with wild animals before a possible problem. A few hours in Jasper, Montey and Octavia had all fallen asleep next to a tree. I was tempted to try and transfigure a blanket but Clarke was still up looking around at the forest that had started to glow with wonder.
"Pretty isn't it," I said to her, breaking her out of her trance.
"Yes, I would never have imagined it back on the ark. It really is beautiful," she said, the wonder in her voice evident.
"Well in a month or so everyone on the ark will be able to see it" I reassured her.
"A month or so??" She asked, confused.
"Well they are desperate that's why we were sent down here. Once they see the ground is livable for about 2 weeks I would say they will want to come down as soon as they can before the kids start going blind etc."
I looked around "Guess Finn has gone to get some water" When I couldn't see him. "He should be fine as long as he doesn't go for a swim." I stood up and offered her my hand to pull her up.
She grabbed it and I pulled as lightly as I could and was glad to see that it didn't seem to cause her any harm or make her shoot off the ground and into the sky. I started to walk around noticing Clarke was following me. I had never seen anything like this. I'm sure my old world didn't have a glowing forest or people would have travelled for miles to see it.
"I heard Finn walking up behind us. I could hear him all the way at the river getting water. These new powers were going to take a while to get used to. "Pretty cool, huh?" Finn asked us handing over two lily pads with water in them.
"Did you go to the river?" Clarke asked even after I told her he went there.
"Figured it was worth losing a finger or two," Finn said.
Clarke to a tiny little sip. "You call that a sip?" She took a bigger one. I wasn't even sure if I needed to drink water. But tried it anyway it tasted just like water.
"You think this means we're all gonna grow two heads?" Finn asked while laughing which set us all off "What do you know? You can laugh." he said to Clarke. "Come on. You have to see this."
He was gesturing to follow him. I wasn't sure what he wanted to show us. I couldn't remember him showing Clarke anything but then again I wasn't even sure if they showed Clarke's group at night.
We kneeled in the dirt and could see a footprint "That's a toe. Plus, as near as I can tell, whatever it is, it's walking on two feet." He said and looked back up at us. "My Guess... monkeys."
Clarke starts to giggle. "I'm sorry. It's just, according to everything I've read, there were no bipedal animals anywhere near here, certainly not monkeys." Sounding a little too smug.
"Right," I said, causing them both to look at me. "And in those books did they mention anything about glow-in-the-dark forests, Man-eating eels, deer with two heads, oh and let's not forget the river that isn't on the map but is still there," I said, waiting a moment for it to sink in. "It's safe to say that the books about the earth from 100 years ago are not 100% true anymore so don't trust them as fact.
I gave them both a pat on the shoulder "You two get some sleep I will take 1st watch. Finn, you take the 2nd watch in 4ish hours" I asked looking at him.
He gave me a nod. "Sure I can take over in 4 hours." I didn't plan on waking him up for his shift. I need to see if magic works can't do that when everyone is awake. I waited a few hours to make sure that everyone was actually asleep. Looking around it seemed safe to try now.
Okay now, what spells to try something that won't cause people to wake up. Pointing my finger at the ground and imagining water coming out of my finger.
"Aguamenti"
And nothing happened, okay try again. I thought hard about water flowing out of my finger.
"Aguamenti!"
And a small amount of water flowed out of my finger and onto the ground. I imagined the water coming out at a faster rate and saw that the magic copied that. I tried imaging a thinner beam of water and saw the spell copy it. Hmm, maybe this will be good for cutting through things If I make it thin and powerful.
"Tempus"
I saw above my hand a clock face made from light showing that it was 5 am. I imagined cutting off the magic and the spell faded away. I was sure I had been up for the last 15 or so hours and I still didn't feel like sleeping at all, at least I know both of my wishes are working now.
Daytime came quickly and the others started to wake up.
"Why didn't you wake me to swap," Finn asked me as he woke up and saw I was still awake.
"Hmm oh sorry I got lost in thought yesterday was a lot to take in and think about," I said trying to look sorry.
"No problem, I need the sleep," He said back. We all started to walk back down to the river to wash our faces and really wake up.
"I would say one at a time to keep an eye out" I suggested "Unless someone wants to be eel food?" Everyone grimaced at that.
"Good idea," Jasper said, "I will keep watch 1st," I think he was trying to make up for not doing anything yesterday when Octavia was in trouble. Not a big deal, you are going to get a spear in you soon. I don't think I can do anything to stop it either. Can't exactly say don't cross the river or you will be speared in the heart by a grounder now can I. The only thing that was calming me down was the fact I knew he would live.
We started to walk up the river looking for a place to cross unlike the day before where I couldn't see any grounders today I could see a few in the trees. They were watching us. I gave them quick glances at vampire speed so they wouldn't notice I couldn't tell who they were so they were not an main character in the show.
We found the spot I recognised in the show with the big thick vine we could use to go across. I wanted to go 1st but wasn't sure how to explain dodging a spear thrown at that speed or what I would say if it hit and did no damage.
Clarke, Octavia, Me and Montey were all on the bottom part of the rocks. With Jasper and Finn on the top part with the big thick vine. They were pulling on it to make sure it was strong enough to hold us as we used it to cross the river.
"Come on. You wanted to go first. Now quit stalling" Clarke encouraged "Mount Weather awaits." Yes, and thank the grounders we won't reach it.
"Just hang on till the apogee, and you'll be fine." I heard Jasper say to Finn. I wasn't sure what that meant before this new world and I still don't.
"The apogee is like the Indians, right?" he asked back, making a joke of some kind I would guess.
"Apogee, not apache," Jasper said back. I was sure the apache was a computer server of some kind.
"He knows. Today Finn, come on." Clarke says impatiently hoping to get to the food quicker.
"Aye, aye, captain. See you on the other side." He said leaning back ready to run forward and across the river.
Just as he is about to jump. "Wait," Jasper says while looking at me and Octavia "Let me go first. I can do it."
Clearly seeing why he wanted to go first he handed Jasper the vine "Knew there was a badass in there somewhere." and gave him a pat on the back. Jasper stalled for a few seconds. "Hey, it's ok to be afraid, Jasper. The trick is not fighting it." He encouraged this would be a nice moment if he wasn't about to be speared in the heart.
Taking a deep breath Jasper lept "See you on the other side. Haha!" and flew across the river.
Looking around and seeing that he made it he started to shout "We are apogee!!!!" I looked around and saw behind us in the trees maybe 40 yards away a grounder with a spear. Everyone was still congratulating each other.
"Come on, Clarke you got this" Jasper shouted as Finn handed her the vine. I watched as he walked back and picked up a sign and lifted it above his head "Mount weather! Whoo! Whoo!!!"
A moment later I saw the spear fly above our heads. I am sure the other hadn't noticed it yet but to me, it seems to be moving as slow as a person walking. Dodging that would be child's play. I am sure that running at full speed normal humans wouldn't be able to see me.
"Jasper! No. Come on." Clarke screamed out as everyone took cover in the rocks lower down. They started to look in the trees hoping to see who had thrown the spear, not that they would be able to see him with what he was wearing and he had moved down to the ground and run down the river.
I could hear Jasper taking shallow breaths. "We're not alone," Clarke said as if we didn't know that.
