Tonight, as usual, I am eating my meal with the other at our table. However, we are already at the end of May and Harry has still not come to me for help. He is frantically looking throughout the castle for a trick that would allow him to pass Fluffy. If I want Harry to pass Fluffy, I'm gonna have to give him a little extra motivation.
I leave the great hall quite quickly, Ron still has his plate full to the brim which should at least give me a good half hour to do what I want. I already collected the password this morning from Neville, who continues to be an invaluable resource for my escapades in the common room of Gryffindor.
This one is still empty at this hour as most students are still eating. I walk into Harry's dorm and place a letter telling him the date of Quirrell's intrusion into the philosopher's stone room on June 4th, in five days.
As I come out of the dorm, I hear the fat lady turning on her hinges and voices coming in my direction. I hide in the doorway of the dormitory and see two of Gryffindor girls chatting while going to sit on a couch. It's clearly time to leave this place.
"Don't you think Potter's changed recently?" As I pass by the girls, I can't help but listen when I hear Harry's name.
"That's right, he looks like a completely different person. The other day, he helped me with a potion assignment."
"Really? But I thought he wasn't good at potions?"
"I don't really know how, but he improved a lot since he came back from vacation."
"His parents must have talked some sense into him so he could put more effort into his studies."
I thought I might learn something about Harry, but in the end, it's just a bunch of meaningless gossip. I leave the common room of Gryffindor to return to mine.
I was looking forward to Harry's reaction, but several days passed and I still have no answer from him. Did he find my word at least? It's now the morning of June 4th, and my stress level has never been higher.
Harry and Ron are also very stressed. They have big black bags under their eyes from staying in the library doing research on magical creatures.
"What's going on with Harry?" Draco looks at me with suspicion. It's true that I wasn't very subtle this time.
"What? Ho, nothing."
"Then why do you keep looking at him like you're expecting something?"
"I was just wondering what they are doing to look so tired."
"Well, they must be working late to catch up on their disastrous grades." For once, Draco's quick deductions will work in my favor.
"Maybe."
At the end of breakfast, I leave to go read in the library. I don't have much left to do at the moment. The magiphone is finally completely finished and I only have to give it to my mother to start its manufacture once I have the philosopher's stone in my possession.
"Hmm." I hear someone clearing his throat next to me. I raise my head to see the tired faces of Harry and Ron. "Can we talk to you for a second?"
"Sure." They drop heavily on the chairs in front of me.
"Have you found a way to get past the three-headed dog?"
"Yes, I found a way to pass it. It's pretty simple, too." I see hope illuminating the faces of the two boys.
"What is it? Tell us!"
"And what would I gain from that? Take me with you and I'll take care of the guard myself, otherwise we don't have an agreement. And like we said, I can keep whatever we find on the way."
Ron and Harry look at each other and don't really seem to know what to do. "You can't take anything, but you can say you helped us protect the school."
"That was more or less automatically included." It's time to make concessions, if I pull too hard I'm afraid they'll change their minds. " But if the objects are really too much, I'll give you a hand for 1000 galleons."
"1,000 galleons!" Ron's face froze in the shock of my announcement. "Harry! It's crazy. That's more than five times "1000 galleons!" Ron's face froze in shock at my announcement. "Harry! It's crazy. That's more than five times my father's monthly salaries. It's a real fortune!" He's not wrong, it's like asking him for almost $10,000.
"No, that's way too much. I can give you 100 galleons, but no more than that." That's the moment I was waiting for. A smile appears on my face. I won the game.
"All right, fine. But you will tell everyone how essential I have been to your little adventure if all goes well. Do we have a deal?"
"We have a deal." Harry reaches his hand out to me and I shake it vigorously.
"Well, now that the price has been decided. When do you want me to come and solve your three-headed dog problem?"
"Tonight. we'll meet you on the third floor."
"Well, you really waited till the last minute to come find me."
At night, I meet Ron and Harry outside the third floor door. We're all a little nervous and we're looking all over the place to see if we can't spot Filch.
"Are you ready?" Ron and I nod our heads and Harry opens the door.
We walk down the hall without a sound. A bit later, we meet Peeves, but he runs away as soon as he sees me, like he saw the devil. We finally arrive in front of the door that leads to the room guarded by Fluffy. The beast is asleep and a sweet melody echoes in the corridor, coming from the room.
"It seems to me that your thief has already passed the dog."
"What do you mean?" Harry seems surprised.
"Well, the door is open and there's music. Three-headed dogs tend to fall asleep when someone plays music, even if the person plays badly."
I take out my wand and point it towards the harp placed on the ground. "Musicalis." The sound of the harp that was beginning to weaken suddenly regains vigor. "Come on, it's not going to last for hours."
We proceed cautiously, trying not to make too much noise. We finally arrive at the hatch between the creature's pawns. You could smell the foul breath of the beast from the nearest head. By Death, what does Hagrid give them for its breath to stink so much?
I open the hatch and signal the other two to follow me as I jump into the void. A few seconds later, we landed on a rather soft plant, the devil's net.
"Don't make a single move, it's a devil's snare. I'll take care of it." Before they can say anything, I pull out my wand and point it to the plant at our feet that is already wrapping around our ankles. "Lumos Solem."
A flash of dazzling, warm sunlight escapes from my wand. The devil's net, which is a plant that fears above all, the absence of moisture, and heat, retracts and folds on itself to try to protect itself from the rays of light.
"Come on, we need to keep moving." I'm walking down a hallway in front of us. " That's the second death trap I'm avoiding. I'm going to have to think about raising my fees." From the looks on their faces, it seems my little joke doesn't amuse them very much.
We continue on our way to reach a large, well room. The top of the room is a skillful set of arches used to support the ceiling. In front of us at the other end of the room is a heavy wooden door closed by a silver lock.
"You think they're going to attack us." Ron is looking at the top of the room and watches for keys. It is true that in the book he confuses them with birds at the beginning.
"Look better, these are keys and I bet one of them opens the door in front of us."
"But how are we going to catch them?"
"I have an idea." I walk to the door and hold my wand towards the key cloud. "Accio old key."
A random key comes in my direction. I catch it on the fly, but it's not the right key. It has to be the big silver key with a twisted wing, but this one's made of iron.
"I take back what I said. It's up to you now." I point to the brooms flying a few inches above the ground. "From what Hermione told me, you've been training at Quidditch since you were a kid. Now's the time to prove to us that you have some talent."
Harry looks at the broom with confidence and grabs it before pushing himself into the air by tapping his foot to the ground. It kind of hurts my heart to recognize it, but he's really good with a broom. It doesn't take him more than a few minutes to grab the key and get back to us. He pushes the key into the lock and opens the door that allows us to access the next room.
This one is made up of a giant chessboard. I suspect that the pieces are protected by magic. I doubt Dumbledore would leave such a loophole in his defense system. That would mean anyone who knew the exploding charm could get through easily.
"What do we do?" Harry is quite surprised to find the giant chessboard and turns his head towards me.
"I guess you have to play a game. But I don't know anything about chess."
"In that case, I'll be in charge. It's not to be mean, Harry, but you're really bad at this game." As expected, Ron takes the reins. This is the first time I've seen him do anything useful.
The game proceeded like in the movies. Ron controlled our pieces and tries to prevent Harry and I from being caught by the other pieces. Finally comes the moment when Ron has to sacrifice himself, they make some emotional farewell to Harry while Ron's knight gets caught. Ron falls to the ground, unconscious, while the remaining white pieces move to let us pass.
"Do you think he's okay?" Harry seems concerned about Ron's health.
"He's fine. I see his chest lifting while he breathes. He must have just fallen unconscious." Harry does not seem very convinced, but he lets himself be guided while I take him to the next room.
