August Erwin Theobald Hirt was the Director of the Institute of Anatomy at the University of Strassburg during the Second World War. He was also a professor at the University. He is most well known for conducting mustard gas experiments on prisoners of the KZ Natzweiler-Struthof, a concentration camp that lies about 60km away from Strassburg.

I'm a history major writing this book because I found that in my high school years, we didn't learn enough about several important aspects of the Second World War. Firstly, the medical experiments in the concentration camps, secondly, how vast and intricate the web of the Nazi system was and how much it dictated the lives of the German people, and lastly, in most basic education programs we are not confronted with actual literature from that time (except for maybe Mein Kampf). I cannot promise historical accuracy, I learn more every day, but I too will make mistakes or may misunderstand things. Feel free to call me out if you've learned something that differs from what I write, I will be glad to discuss it! I cannot promise that updates will always be stable and frequent due to my duty as a student. Danke im Voraus!

The book "Trau keinem Fuchs auf grüner Heid, und keinem Jud bei seinem Eid!" exists. It was written by Elvira Bauer, and published in 1936. The translation used in this chapter is my own.

The title of this chapter plays on the poem "Todesfuge" engl. "Death Fugue" by Paul Celan - in which one reoccuring line reads 'dein goldenes Haar Margarete'. It is one of my favourite poems of all time, I encourage anyone who isn't familiar with it already to take a look.
