That’s such a horrible personal history. Cant really blame the original for becoming such a destructive force. Does the new Ningyan carry the actual memories or just knowledge from the books?

Some translators make that choice when they publish in English. They seem to think it will appeal to more Western readers and make the characters more relatable. It can be more obvious for a reader when the novel being translated has many more Eastern customs and/ or settings. If you found this original, you can be assured that they have proper Chinese names.
