Although I don't know much about Japanese mythology. Mythology in general can be based on different beliefs regarding any god. For example: Greek hero Theseus was defined as a confident, strong and helpful person in some of his mythological incidents. But some Greek poets defined him as a overconfident, asshole. Any country's culture and heritage decide the stories regarding any god in their country's mythology.
