It depends on the circumstances. Currently standing out also means garnering the attention of those big academy recruiters who are watching from the shadows, tsk tsk. These recruiters give scholarships to talented young mages that normal citizens couldn't afford to pay such fees of the mage academy. Showing off is the more suitable option, as mc prefers to help his parents as well as not let those tier 2 mages be ranked higher than him. (He's actually salty for not being able to reach tier 2 rank XD)
