Isn't it a little ridiculous for her mother to say "try avoid getting bruises where they show"? As if she chooses how she's beaten? Like wtf, if it matter why not just have her be not beaten. They cant even help her for their own convenience?

I wish this book and those like it would stop insisting on writing from the perspective of the villains, as if it makes them sympathetic and heightens the stakes.

I wish they would just out them as dark witches already. Like Cmon, clearly they atent weak and should be contained, they use magi probably!

Im not very interested in Helmas point of view, not anymore anyway. Sort of lost interest around when the the last people i followed (mc's parents) died off-screen, not really feeling much investment anymore in his family you know?

This is a good explanation. However i agree with the commenter that it should have been made clear. The mc absolutely did what he did while he couldnt feel emotions. But that shouldve been clarified better in the story. I didnt realize the mc would go that far until he did it, and I wouldve never known he felt such desperation because you never wrote about in the story. It was jarring, and still is.
