Nate said, “I didn’t mean for anything like this to happen.”

When Nate neither moved nor said more, Rusty figured a response was in order. “Me neither,” he said.

“We can’t go back to the car. It’ll be dark before we get halfway.”

The sun was indeed setting, but it seemed obvious that wasn’t Nate’s point.

Now Rusty was feeling grumpy, too.

He sucked his upper lip—annoyingly finding the taste of Nate there—trying to keep from saying something snarky. He settled on a quick nod as answer.

“Just so we’re clear,” Nate said. “Like I said earlier, it doesn’t mean anything.” He turned away, stepping back onto the trail and on down toward the river.
