CHAPTER 22: They Were Out Here To Kill Us

CHAPTER 22: They Were Out Here To Kill Us

BLAIR WADSON

Everything will fall apart. Or maybe it already did.

I gasped for air as my consciousness went back.

"Oh, my God, B-Blair… w-we have to get out of here," she said, her voice panicky. "I-I couldn't fine B-Brooke…"

Matinding takot ang nakapinta sa kanyang mukha.

I blinked several times before my vision finally adjusted. Nahihirapan din akong huminga. Ang daming masakit sa katawan ko. I could feel the frigid air in the atmosphere engulfing every inch of my skin. Due to the low temperature, it wass blocking my nostrils, keeping me from breathing evenly.

"Celaena…" my voice came out barely as a whisper. Nanginginig akong humugot ng hangin. "H-how long was I unconscious?"

"Blair, look, it doesn't matter right now. Kailangan na muna nating makaalis dito," anas niya. "Any minute now, that bus will explode."

Tinulungan niya akong makatayo.

"Celaena," I said, my voice raspy. It brought warmth against my cold skin.

"P-Please don't cry, Blair! We have to get out of here!" ulit niya. Nagawa kong tumango. "C-can you walk?" nanginginig ang boses niya. When she moved, I heard the shards of broken glass against her shoes.

"I-I can try…" I let out a groan. "Where's Brooke?"

Umiling si Celaena. "I couldn't find her anywhere. Let's look for her habang naglalakad tayo. We can't waste anymore time."

Tumingin ako sa kaliwa ko. A few feet away from me was a body. It was sprawled on the ground. I realized it was Janice, ang pinakatahimik sa classroom namin. Blood was trickling down from her head. I could barely see her face. It was covered with her own blood.

I had to avert my eyes from the scene. A shiver ran down my spine.

The smoke coming from the bus reeked of gas and smoke. And when it happens, we won't be able to survive the explosion. Nagawa naming mabuhay matapos ang aksidente. We were given a second chance. And we have to take it.

Blood oozed from his open wound. I sobbed, I couldn't help it—no, scratch that, I couldn't do anything right now but cry.

"We have to go. Now."

There was enough light for me to see our surrounding. May kagubatan sa kabilang parte. We can hide there, I said to myself.

She's nowhere to be found.

I stopped walking and grabbed her hand. "W-wait, Astrid. We should help them…" I bit the inside of my cheek to stop myself from screaming in pain.

"B-but… baka biglang sumabog… and I know some of us are already out there without even helping the others…" umiling-iling pa siya at hinawakan ang kanyang sentido. "Kahit ngayon lang, Blair. We have to think of ourselves first."

I hesitated for a second. "Celaena… we have to go back. May oras pa tayo para mailabas sila sa bus. We can't just leave them. I can go back by myself. Just stay here," nakikiusap na sabi ko.

Saglit siyang nag-isip bago sumagot. I was about to go back to the bus when she took my hand.

"Fuck," she muttered under her breath. "I need to get this off first."

"H-help…" I heard someone say.

"Wait for me here," she said.

"We're going to get you out there—" sabi niya na nakayukod pa rin sa bintana.

When we looked up from the sky, there was a hovercraft above us. Lumipad iyon patungo sa kagubatan at tumigil. Slowly, it descended to the ground, blowing the trees around it.

It echoed throughout the forest. From our spot, I could see their familiar figures walking towards our direction—their cloaks were almost concealed by the darkness behind them. Their faces were concealed by the same cat-like masks. Their heads were only looking at one place—at us.

"Wha—" but before she could even utter another word, while grabbing her arm, I pulled her to the other side of the bus.

"Oh, fuck me," she said, her voice was trembling. "What do we do now?"

"Kailangan nating magtago," nagawa kong sabihin.

Her face was pale and so were her lips. Tumingin siya sa likod namin. "There."

Malapad ang puno kaya sigurado akong hindi nila kami makikita rito—or so I hoped.

"Sila 'yong mga nakita ko…" I started to say but before I could continue, horrifying images of them flashed in my head—their scary masks. But there was something in them that gives me the chills—maybe it was death.

I didn't know exactly if we were both trembling because of the cold… or because of fear.

I said the first thing that came in my mind. "It's going to be okay. She's going to be okay."

I could feel my own heart hammering inside my chest.

"N-no…" umiling-iling siya. "No, it's n-not… baka p-patayin nila tayo…" she started sobbing. "Why would they even be here? To take a trip?"

"Get a hold of yourself, Celaena!" I whispered angrily through gritted teeth. "Huminahon ka. Kailangan lang nating manatili rito, then we're going to find Brooke and get them out of that bus."

"O-okay… fuck, fuck fuck," she cursed. Her chest was heaving, indication that she's trying to steady her breath.

I knew that the sun was about to rise. I just didn't exactly know when. Pareho naming kailangan ng init. I could feel the chill engulfing my skin like a blanket. Our surrounding smelled like wet grass and earth.

Tila bumalik ako sa sarili ko nang marinig ko ang ilang mga yabag, rubber boots against the wet earth. And it was getting near our spot.

In the intense silence, I heard someone screamed. The scream tore through me like a great shard of glass. I felt my eyes widened and pulse quickened, my heart thudding like a rock rattling inside a box. Napagtanto kong boses iyon ni Janice. Muling siyang sumigaw—desperate, terrified.

I wanted to go to her—I wanted to save them. But how?

"Help—!"

I felt a single tear trickled down my frigid cheek. She's gone, was all I could say to myself.

There was no sign of breathing coming from the creatures just meters away from us. Pero alam kong naroon sila. I felt Celaena's hand found mine. Mahigpit ko iyong hinawakan.

Nasa likod natin sila, I mouthed, picking up the large rock beside me. Just in case.

Tango lang ang naisagot niya. From that moment, I was sure of one thing. They were out here to kill us.
