Chapter 10

After a few days went by the band had a performance and this would be Jane's first performance with the band. It was a small show at a bar, but they were able to get permission to play a few songs. Of course, they had a few but they also wanted to include a cover or two. That is also the reason Jane had to practice with the band for the past few days as well. They also had practice that entire day however those plans were about to change.

That morning Jane, Kelly and the rest of the kids had gotten ready and were about to leave when Jane saw a note at the front door. She read it out loud, "'Some guys are going to your schools to make sure you're going. You better go or else.'" "How can you read that? He has terrible handwriting and worse grammar," Kelly asked. "You'd be surprised at the amount of people with awful handwriting. You know what this means." They both knew they had to go to school instead of practice. They let the rest of the band know however Kelly was upset she couldn't go. "Hey, we're performing at a bar. I don't think people will notice if we're bad," That was Jane's poor attempt at making Kelly feel better. Kelly didn't respond and they headed to school.

As usual Jane and Kelly walked the kids to school first. Then when Jane and Kelly went to school, they split ways. It's not that they didn't want to be seen with each other, Jane just didn't want to hang out with Kelly's friends. Jane preferred to not interact at school with anyone if not needed to.

Kelly went to meet her friends and Jane was walking to class when she bumped into Jess. "Where have you been? I haven't seen you in your classes," Jess wondered. "I didn't come," Jane simply told her. "Why not you're supposed to go to school and also this is the only time I get to see you," Jess admitted. Jane didn't think she wanted to see her. "I didn't…. I'll try to come when I can," Jane also let her true feelings slip, but she couldn't, she wouldn't let herself. "Good, because you're close to coming home," Jess told her. 'Oh' Jane thought to herself, she'd assumed they had just stopped trying, that they didn't want her back. "Also, you missed our first therapy session. I thought you would come," Jess said sadly. "Sorry, my foster father wouldn't let me," Jane explained.

Which was true, at the time of the therapy session Frank would be home and everyone needed to be in the house but not in his view. Frank was…. complicated, he just wanted the kids home in case any of the social workers showed up, but he didn't want to see them.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I was starting to think you didn't want anything with me, us, I mean," Jess corrected herself. 'Never,' Jane thought to herself, but couldn't bring herself to say it. Instead, she responded with, "Maybe when I return." Then realized she had forgotten something. "Here," Jane handed Jess a folded paper. "For the next time you go to therapy. I finally thought of a few questions." "Oh, okay I'll be sure to ask them," Jess was going to say something when her friends interrupted. "Hey Jess, let's go," A girl called. "That's your cue, see you around," Jane said and left, not letting Jess respond.

Jane went to all classes and attempted to look as if she were paying attention. Meanwhile, a man with a notebook and pen sat in a few of her classes and observed her. He was wearing a formal pants suit. He watched carefully and took notes. When the school day was over the man had left and Jane was finally in the clear or so she thought.

She was on her way out when someone stopped her. A boy, not just any boy, it was the boy that she nearly punched a while back. "I want a rematch," he told her. "Rematch? That wasn't even a fight. It was just you being scared," Jane reminded him. "I wasn't scared...just… surprised. Either way I want a rematch, tomorrow after school, in the parking lot." "Why would I fight you? I don't even know your name," As much as she wanted to, Jane didn't have a real reason to fight him. "Henry, and whoever wins is named top dog of the school. How's that?" Henry was hoping that would be enough for her to accept. Lucky for him Jane just needed a reason to. "Fine, see you then," she said before walking away. Henry didn't expect that to work but he took the win.

Jane met up with the band that was preparing to go on stage. "We're about to go on, grab your guitar and we'll get on stage," Kelly told Jane, and she did. First Bryan announced the band, "Hello everybody we are the 'UnWanted' and we hope you enjoy our performance. Then the rest of the band entered, and they all got into their positions. That night they played some of their songs. With Kelly as their lead singer and Jane as their second. During their performance some people began to dance, even sober people. The crowd seemed to enjoy their music, mostly the heartbreak songs. Once they finished playing, they Kelly made sure to thank the audience.

Most of the audience had returned to what they had been doing before. However, after the band packed and were on their way out a guy stopped them. "So, this is my replacement? Guess you guys just replaced family, at least I thought we were." "I was against this in the first place," Devin stated. "Thanks Devin," Everlyn said sarcastically. "It's not what it looks like Max," Kelly attempted to defuse the situation however Max was enraged. "You all are traitors." "We needed a singer, and you were a no show. What were we supposed to do?" Wes reminded him. "You out of all people have no place to talk. This entire time you didn't think I'd realize that you liked Kelly while I was dating her?" Max called him out.

"Alright well text me when you guys settle this," Jane attempted to leave however Max grabbed her arm. "Where do you think you're going? This is your fault," her told her. Jane gave him a cold stare but he was too enraged to let go. In fact, he tightened his grip, Jane began to smirk already knowing what next move but wanting to give them a few more seconds to speak. "This isn't her fault, let her go," Kelly told him. "It is her fault, if she weren't here maybe this wouldn't have happened," but before anyone could respond they heard someone say. "Really kid? Aren't you too young to start a fight at a bar?" Jane recognized it immediately. It was no other than Omar.

"This isn't your business old man," Max told him. "It is when there is an underage kid at a bar." "This isn't over," he said before letting Jane go and leaving. "You kids alright?" Omar asked. The group was a bit shaken up but they were fine. Then Omar looked over at Jane and told her, "I don't even need to ask you." Jane responded with, "quit acting." "Glad we're on the same page." "You two know each other?" Bryan asked. "Yeah, I'm Omar, her foster father... was," He answered them. "Didn't need your help," Jane said. " I know but there's something I need to tell you. Harper was able to get everything fixed, you're coming back," he informed her. Jane had a perplexed look. "What? Why would she do something like that?" She asked, shocked and conflicted. "Because that's how she is, compassionate, and caring. She believes everyone can be saved. That's what…" "makes her so special." Jane finished his thoughts. Omar nods. "I'll see you soon," he said before he left.

"Well, that was awkward," Will stated. "Does that mean you're leaving?" Kelly asked. "I'll be around,.....just not…." "At Frank's house," Kelly finished Jane's sentence. "Yeah," was all Jane could say.

Kelly and Jane were back at their foster house, Jane was repacking the few clothes she had unpacked, while Kelly helped. It was silent for a while, until Kelly spoke," it's good that they want your back. Not everyone gets to feel wanted." "I know, I shouldn't…. I shouldn't be leaving," Jane said. "Why not?" "I'll be leaving kids in danger," She stated. "We were here before you, we'll be fine," Kelly attempted to assure her, however neither of them actually believed it.

After a few hours, Harper is at the door with Albert, her social worker. They were speaking to Frank, letting him know that they were taking Jane. Jane said her goodbye to the kids and Kelly. Once they arrived at Harper's house, Jane sat on the steps of the porch and waited while Harper and Albert talked. Jane took this moment to wonder what was really happening, why Harper wanted her back even after she told her one of the many things that she is. However, she wasn't much into the thought when Harper walked up and sat next to her.

"Hey, I know you don't talk about your feelings but is there anything you want to talk about or even tell me, you can. At any time," she told her. Jane looked at her for a second and then tried to speak," I….um…. why?" "Why what?" "Why did you bring me back?" Jane asked. "I want you here and I told you I would," Harper explained and gave her a smile. Jane gave a small smile. They sat there enjoying the silence for a few more seconds before Harper spoke again. "Let's go inside, Jess is really excited about you coming back." "Really?" "Yeah, she was constantly asking when you would be back." Harper stood up and went inside with Jane following a few steps behind.

As soon as the front door closed Jess came practically running down the stairs and straight to Jane. Before anyone could speak Jess instantly hugged Jane, nearly causing her to fall.

"I'm so happy you're back," Jess told her. Jane wrapped one arm around her, while still holding her bag in the other. Jane didn't know what to say so she stayed silent. After what felt like an eternity Jess finally let go. "There's so much that I have to tell you," Jess said then dragged Jane away.

Harper went to the living room where Omar sat on the couch. There was silence for what seemed like hours, however only a few seconds passed. Finally Omar spoke and looked at her, "I'm sorry." "No….you're only sorry you were caught," Harper stated while her eyes began to tear up. "Was that why you brought her back? So she could spy on me?" Harper was holding back her rage at that comment as much as she could. "No, it's because even though she hasn't been with us for long, I already know we need her and even if she doesn't realize it yet she needs us. Not only that, this family has too many secrets. We live together but we're not a family, and so far she's the only one who has been truthful," Harper confessed. "She's going to destroy our family and you'll regret not listening to me when I told you to not bring her back," he said before getting up from the couch.
