Midnight Call

"Hello?" His mobile phone ringing in the middle of the night, Fyre groaned as he reached for his device and instinctively accepted the call. He didn't know what time it was now but guessed it was already past 12 am. Meanwhile, on the other line, Jonathan didn't speak yet as he was surprised that the call even connected. He received a message from Tian Zi earlier that Fyre had accepted his proposal. He already knew he had no chance and it's not like he was going to pursue Fyre. In fact, he already entrusted the Omega to his friend but when he learned of such news, he couldn't help but feel heartbroken. That's why right now, he's wallowing in pain while drinking and before he knew it, his hand was already calling Fyre's number. He thought the Omega wouldn't accept his call since it was late but he did and Jonathan didn't know what to say.

"Hello? Who is it?" Fyre asked again, his eyes were still closed and he didn't bother looking at the caller ID since he knew there were just a handful of people who knew his number and all of them are very close to him, except maybe Julie Walker, who just recently received his contacts.

[Uhmm, it's me... Jonathan.] Jonathan finally replied after clearing his voice. [Sorry. I interrupted your sleep,] he added, quickly making Fyre open his eyes fully waking him up from his drowsiness. Truthfully, after what he had heard that day from the Alpha, he's been meaning to avoid him but recently he decided to confront Jonathan about it. He wasn't going to be mad at him because the Alpha's been truly nice and helped him throughout the years. Fyre also saw how broken Jonathan was when his sister died so he didn't want to deny and wrong him just because of something he had heard but he also can't just go on pretending he didn't hear anything.

"No, it's okay. What's the problem?" Fyre calmly asked before he got up. He successfully removed Tian Zi's arms wrapped around his torso without waking him up before he wore his robe and walked straight to the balcony.

[Well, I just heard from Zi that you've got engaged... I called to congratulate you. I am happy for you,] Jonathan conveyed but instead of sounding happy, his voice sounded melancholic. It wasn't difficult to notice but Fyre decided to ignore it.

"Hmmn, thank you. Things happened and now we've come to this."

[Are you happy?] Jonathan suddenly asked, making Fyre smile because he knew the Alpha's concern was genuine. Based on how he's acting, it seemed that he wasn't even planning to pursue whatever feelings he had for him because if he did, Fyre didn't think he'd be staying friends with him.

"I am..." Fyre replied softly, which did not receive a reply from the Alpha. Fyre didn't mind. In fact he's thankful because he now has a chance to change the subject. This time he just had one question in his mind and although he might have already known the answer, he wanted Jonathan to say it himself and assure him once again.

"Jonathan..." Fyre called this time before he took a deep breath.

[Hmm?]

"D-Did you really love Remi? I just want an honest answer," Fyre asked, failing to sound natural because he was indeed desperate for this clarification. He didn't care what the Alpha felt for him now because it didn't matter to him, what matters to him is whether the Alpha did love Remi or not. Whether his sister left the world knowing how it felt to be loved by someone she loved so dearly. Fyre was well aware Jonathan could lie but even if it's a lie, he'd be satisfied if he replied that he did.

[Of course, I've loved her with all my heart. It may be short but I really did...] Jonathan replied after a deep sigh. His words were true, he did love Remi for a short while and even when that love slowly faded, he would have still chosen her anytime over anyone else, even over Fyre. This was his true feelings.

"I'm glad. Then... Do you have anything else you want to tell me?" Fyre probed, briefly stunning Jonathan because it's not like he's allowed to say whatever he wanted to say. He didn't want to ruin his relationship with Fyre just like Tian Zi told him.

[I already congratulated you. That's the main reason why I called but I also want to apologize that I couldn't visit you at the hospital back then. I had to go back urgently. Zi told me that you were fine already so I was no longer worried. I'm also glad Maverick is now fine. I wanted to call but my hands were occupied until now,] Jonathan replied and thought he might need to end the call soon.

"Hmm, it's fine. It wasn't anything serious anyway. Mave is now living separately with his brothers. Also, Zi told me as well that you went back. I already knew you were busy and probably just sneaked out again," Fyre said with a soft smile but this wasn't what he wanted to hear.

[Then I'll have to go then since it's late—] Jonathan began to excuse, which Fyre quickly cut off.

"Back then...! When you went to my house drunk, you said something..." Fyre started, which quickly halted Jonathan from trying to escape. He imagined the scenario Fyre gave him and his heart began to pound faster than normal because the reason why Tian Zi knew his hidden feeling to Fyre was because of his drunk talk. Maybe he confessed to Fyre in his drunk state. But then again, if he did, shouldn't Fyre be angry at him right now!?

"You told me you couldn't help falling for me..." Fyre revealed and Jonathan gasped as he couldn't utter a single word to defend himself except calling on Fyre's name.

[Fyre...]

"Don't worry. I'm not mad anymore. I'll also pretend I didn't hear anything so let's continue becoming friends from now on, okay?" Fyre suggested, quickly catching Jonathan off guard. For a second he didn't know what to respond to that. He was hurt for sure but for him that was for the best. After all, he never had a chance. But to be exposed like this, he's already thinking he had to stop drinking alcohol too much.

"If you're wondering why I'm saying this, well it's because you're a precious friend that I don't want to lose. I'll be honest, I wasn't happy when you said such absurd things. I was mad and didn't want to talk or see you but now that I've thought of it, it's enough for me that I know that you truly loved Remi. Jonathan, Remi has died. And although I couldn't be with you, I sincerely wish you would be happy with someone who will love and cherish you like my sister did," Fyre conveyed with a soft smile on his lips. He already let go of his emotions regarding Remi's death and besides, he's too happy now to be hating someone.

Remi is dead so it's natural to move on. Jonathan has been a good friend who also helped him a lot to cope with his depression. He honestly doesn't want to lose him just because of this. He didn't have a lot of friends and so each one of them is precious.

[I'm sorry.] Jonathan only managed to utter. His voice was soft and Fyre could tell how the Alpha was being remorseful and he kinda understood why. Just like Jonathan said that time when he was drunk, he tried to stop it but couldn't. Perhaps, the Alpha had been carrying this for a long time and been in despair. Developing feelings to your dead lover's sibling, it wasn't that bad but most people would turn their heads. As a nobleman like Jonathan, he cannot catch such attention. He's simply living in a different world than the rest of them so people's eyes are following.

"You don't need to apologize. I know you weren't in a good spot. Whatever you have been through in the past years, I hope you'll be happy," Fyre assured and genuinely wished for the Alpha's happiness. When the message was conveyed, Jonathan could feel Fyre's concern that it made him smile. This little bit of affection coming from the Omega was enough for him. He thought that once the day had come that his feelings would be exposed, it would also be the day where he'll have to end up being friends with him but now this had happened and he's more than happy. At least this way, he could go back to the way he was without feeling conscious.

[Then... if Zi ever hurt you, don't hesitate to come to me. I'll make you happy,] Jonathan teased as he chuckled, making Fyre laugh as well. However, he didn't truly know how serious Jonathan was with his words. If someday Zi ended up hurting Fyre, he would truly take the Omega away but still he hoped that day won't come. Fyre hurting is the least thing he wanted to happen.

"Quit joking around..." Fyre laughed. The atmosphere around them now had come back to the way it was. Thankfully, he decided he would confront Jonathan about it instead of keeping it in. Now, he felt way better.

"Anyway, you can come back here anytime when you're no longer busy. Let's hang out like old times," Fyre added. They chatted for a bit until it was very late before they finally decided to end the call. As soon as the call disconnected, Fyre took a deep sigh looking at the dark sky with a smile on his face. He thought of the things he went through, although it wasn't as sad as everyone would think, he does believe he deserved the happiness he's having now.

"I should sleep before Tian Zi noticed I left the bed," Fyre mumbled to himself. Additionally, he's starting to feel cold and he might get sick if he continued to stay on the balcony where the wind was strong. However, just as he was about to step inside the room, his phone began to ring again. Fyre frowned and curiously looked at the caller Id to read Joaquinn's name this time.

"Hmm? Why is he calling at this time?" Fyre curiously asked himself before he looked at the time that just turned 1 am. Joaquinn is a reasonable person and he's not the kind to call someone so late unless it was an emergency so without thinking much, he quickly accepted the call saying "Hello?"

"Hello?" Fyre repeated when there was no one responding from the first one. He had to look at his screen to know whether the call was connected or not.

"That's odd. Quinn? Is that you?" Fyre asked this time, making sure he didn't save the wrong number or maybe someone else was using the Alpha's cellphone. Perhaps it got stolen? Thankfully, before Fyre's mind got way deeper into his imagination, he heard someone sigh from the other side and finally a reply.

[Hmm, it's me. I heard you and Tian Zi got engaged,] the Alpha began, instantly making Fyre sigh a relief.

"Oh yeah. Did you call me for that??"

[Yeah... to congratulate you...] Joaquinn expressed but Fyre frowned because the Alpha didn't sound congratulating at all. Instead, he sounded almost melancholic like how Jonathan sounded just now before they'd made up... even though they didn't actually fight.

"Oh thank you, but are you okay?? Did something happen?" Fyre asked worriedly. Meanwhile, since he was facing the view outside, he didn't notice Tian Zi coming and suddenly hugged him from the back causing him to squeal a little.

"Who's calling you at this hour??" Tian Zi softly whispered, kissing Fyre's nape before sucking on it while tightly squeezing Omega against his warm body. Fyre gasped at the action and he blushed deep red, trying to stop himself from moaning from the Alpha's bite.

[I'm fine. Anyway, I must have disturbed you two. I'll end the call now,] Joaquinn said, obviously hearing Tian Zi from Fyre's side. He didn't wait for the Omega to reply and quickly ended the call. At the same time, Fyre was a little surprised to be cut off so suddenly but he does understand Joaquinn. The Alpha must have thought he's doing something with Tian Zi while calling him.

"Dammit! That's Joaquinn, what do you think he would think we were doing after hearing me like that!?" Fyre roared and finally struggled out of his lover's hold.

"Hmmp! It's his fault anyway for calling you so late at night... Besides, why is he calling you anyway? That bastard, it's too late to come and confess. You're mine," Tian Zi whined after being scolded. On the other hand, Fyre just massaged his temples. He knew Alpha's are possessive but Tian Zi didn't really need to get jealous of all Alpha friends he had.

"You psycho!" Fyre roared again, kissing Tian Zi on his leg before quickly running inside the room leaving the Alpha groaning in pain.
