Chapter 6

That evening, Hybreed meets Katherine at the cliff they first met when she was a little girl. For the longest time, the two shared a deep friendship ever since Hybreed saved her from the same wolf pack that nearly killed Gregory. Despite them being of a different as she grew into a young and mature woman, they both have expressed feelings for each other. However, Katherine refuses to allow Hybreed to turn her. This is because she wants to die peacefully as a human and not live forever while those she loves and cares about end up dying at some point. Sitting down next to each other, they both look out at the sun setting as the wind blows softly against them. Katherine's blonde hair blowing ever so gracefully makes her look like an angel.

Hybreed: A tragedy happened last night. Didn't it?

Katherine looks at him and their eyes meet, but she doesn't respond, but Hybreed can read her thoughts and knows he is right.

Hybreed: Is there something you are not telling me?

Katherine Connors: No. The woman they killed last night was accused and charged of witchcraft. She was not given a fair trial and no evidence was presented.

Hybreed: How do they know?

Katherine Connors: There's something, evil lurking beyond these woods. I'm surprised you have not felt it like I have.

Hybreed: What are you trying to tell me?

Katherine Connors: My heritage. A long time ago, my great grandmother made a deal with an ancient demon known as Enchantress to protect her and her bloodline from any harm. This was unless a sacrifice was made every year. I failed to fulfill the annual sacrifice two days ago.

Hybreed: What happens if this sacrifice never comes to be?

Katherine Connors: The demon will then deceive the townspeople into killing every young woman from the age of seventeen and up in the name of witchcraft and I fear I could be next at any time unless I give the demon what it wants, which is to slay one of yours.

Startled by this revelation, Hybreed suddenly stands up and backs away from her as she too stands to her feet. Katherine takes a silver knife from her shoe as Hybreed backs up, keeping a hand in front of him as if to keep her away.

Hybreed: I want you to think about what you are doing.

Katherine Connors: I don't want to kill you, Hybreed. You are my friend.

She then throws the knife over the cliff and begins to cry as she falls to her knees. Hybreed gently comforts her and holds her in his arms.

Hybreed: Listen to me. Hey, I'm not willing to let anything happen to you. You hear me? I need you to be strong and not let this entity try to deceive you. You are stronger than it and you are a fighter. Remember all that I taught you.

A distant howling is heard, calling Hybreed home. He sends Katherine back to the town and they depart. However, Hybreed climbs on top of a tree that overlooks the town and watches from afar as Katherine heads to see Gregory at his shop. A sudden eerie gust of wind blows that doesn't feel ordinary, but rather evil and cold. A whisper catches him off guard and causes him to fall from the tree and land hard on the ground below! Standing to his feet, Hybreed looks around when he comes face to face with a dark figure, the Enchantress.

Hybreed: Stay away from her. She doesn't deserve to be in this position.

Enchantress: A deal is a deal. She failed and now must pay.

Becoming agitated, Hybreed's eyes turn bright gold yellow as he transforms, but as he takes a swing, it does nothing and is put on his back by the entity.

Enchantress: You may be a powerful being, but you are nothing to me. I will have my vengeance and once I have her, only true love can free her.

In an instant, the entity disappears leaving Hybreed dazed and angry as he stands to his feet and brushes himself off, turning back to his human form. Even if he warns her, it will not do any good. One way or another, the entity will have Katherine and there is nothing he can do to save her. Looking back at the lamps that were lit up with horse carriages transporting citizens to their homes, stores, pubs, and other locations, Hybreed notices Katherine socializing with the children and laughing.
