The dishes cost a fortune, but for the Thompson family, it was mere pocket change.
"So, you're still determined to go to Scotland?"
"Yes, I have to go." Ryder replied, his gaze intensifying, his jaw set in determination. "I can't let this opportunity slip away."
"What time is your flight?" Akai asked, her brow furrowed in worry.
"At 6 a.m.," he replied, his eyes locked on hers, as if seeking her understanding.
Just as Akai was about to say something, Ryder's phone rang, interrupting their conversation. "Excuse me, Akai." he said, stepping away to answer the call.
As Ryder stepped away, Akai's gaze swept the restaurant, taking in its elegant charm. Soft light danced across the walls, and crystal chandeliers cast tiny, shimmering shadows. The table settings sparkled like diamonds, and the carpets felt silky beneath her feet. Above, a beautiful mural transformed the ceiling into a work of art. Akai felt as though she'd entered a luxurious palace, surrounded by treasures. Her eyes widened in wonder, her mind absorbing the splendor.
Solo at the table, Akai's gaze roamed the restaurant's sumptuous crystal decor, her eyes shining with astonishment. "Dining in a place like this is a dream come true," she reflected. When Ryder returned, their eyes connected, and he offered a remorseful smile. "Forgive me, Akai. ."
"It's okay, Ryder," Akai replied, her expression softening. "I understand."
Outside Ryder's car, Akai flashed a wry smile. "Thanks for the luxurious meal, Ryder. Your family's riches certainly make it easy." Ryder's face broke into a warm grin. "Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, my family's wealthy, but I don't take money for granted."
"Are you still angry with me?"
Akai sighed, her expression a mix of frustration and amusement. "Then would I be talking to you now, Ryder?"
"Good point. I thought you were still angry with me."
Ryder's playful cheek pinch earned him a gentle push from Akai. "Hands off, Ryder. You're not off the hook yet," she teased. "I only mentioned my anger has eased up a little, understand?"
Ryder swung open the passenger door, and Akai's chest skipped a beat. She settled into the plush seat, her pulse racing with heightened expectation. Ryder claimed the driver's seat, clicking his belt into place, and their gazes intertwined. Akai's fingers faltered over her seatbelt, betraying a faint quiver. Ryder's eyes registered her distress and he leaned in, his face mere inches from hers, his proximity electrifying.
"Here, let me." he said softly, his breath caressing her skin. Akai's anxiety grew as Ryder's proximity ignited a flutter in her chest. His fingers brushed against hers, securing the seatbelt with a gentle touch.
Ryder resumed his seat, and Akai's cheeks glowed, her pulse racing. Her body betrayed her, responding to Ryder's nearness. She forgot to thank him. "You good?" Ryder asked, his eyes twinkling with humor. Akai nodded, her voice stuck. "I'm okay." she stammered. Ryder chuckled, his eyes locked on hers. "You seem a little rattled." he teased.
Akai's face grew hotter, her heart pounding in her chest. She couldn't deny the attraction between them.
Ryder's gaze remained fixed on the road ahead, while Akai's drifted outside, transfixed by the darkening sky's ominous grey clouds, swirling with deep purple and blue hues. "Rain's coming," she murmured, barely audible over the engine's hum. Ryder's ears picked up her whisper, and he glanced over, his eyes meeting hers. "Want to experience something special?" he asked, voice low and husky. Akai's curiosity spiked, and she turned to face him. "What is it?" she asked, voice slightly louder, heart racing with anticipation.
Ryder's smile broadened, and he flipped a switch on the dashboard. The car's roof slid open, revealing the darkening sky above. Wind rustled through Akai's hair, sending shivers through her veins. "Wow!" she breathed, eyes wide with wonder. "This is breathtaking!" "Knew you'd love it," Ryder said warmly. "Feeling the elements makes you feel alive, doesn't it?" Akai nodded enthusiastically. "Yes! It's like the world's unfolding before us!"
As raindrops began falling, Akai felt joy wash over her. She tilted her face up, letting raindrops hit her skin, and felt an unprecedented sense of freedom.
"Akai exclaimed, "Ryder, it's going to pour! Close the roof, I don't want us to get drenched and risk getting sick. Remember, Scotland awaits, and your dreams are within reach!" Ryder smiled, eyes snapping back to the road. "You're right, got caught up in the moment." He closed the roof just as the rain intensified.
Akai sighed in relief, her damp hair clinging to her face. "That was close!" she laughed. Ryder chuckled. "You always look out for me, Akai." Akai's heart fluttered at the compliment. "Someone has to keep you grounded
" she teased.
The rain drummed against the roof, and Ryder turned serious. The car continued on, the rain creating a soothing melody. Akai knew this moment would stay with her forever.
"Life's an adventure, and I'm grateful we're navigating it together." she whispered, eyes locked on Ryder's face.
"I'm grateful we're in it for the long haul." Ryder replied, conviction in his voice.
