Waking Up

Bright sunlight broke into a lavishly furnished room that seems to come straight out of a book.

There are flowers in antique vases that seem to be embroidered in gold thread in several geometric patterns. It is not only the vases that have this design but also the walls and the pillars at the four corners of the room.

The room itself is all shades of beige from the bed itself to the velvet texture curtains at the window. There is a hint of light blue sprinkled around in the cushions and little throw pillows on the bed as well as on the couches.

Soft wind blew into the room as the curtains moved back and forth.

Soft orchestral music played in the background as the twittering of birds could be heard all around as the sun continued it shine into the room.

A perfect morning, with a-

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!" A sudden shout filled the peaceful ambiance.

The loud, almost blood-curdling scream could only come from the person laying on the bed.

Blankets were thrown all along the ground as the person jumped out of the bed and rushed into the bathroom.

One look at the mirror and the golden locks of hair wisped in front of his face with bright emerald eyes staring back at him.

He stared at his reflection, pressing his cheeks together and pinching them in an attempt to wake himself up from this awful dream.

He looked straight at his hands forming into a fist and then at the mirror again before gritting his teeth and punching himself in the face.

Now, you must be wondering who this person is and why he is behaving like such an idiot. Well, I will tell you. But first, we have to get to the very beginning.

The very, very beginning.

You see, it all started on the day of my, I mean his, birth. The sun rained hail and-

You all know that was not possible right? There is no way the sun rained hail, right? What does that look like anyway?

Moving on, my mother had a dream that I, I mean he, would be born when the sun rose highest in the sky and it began to rain gold.

Safe to say that he was born at the ungodly hour of 3:36 a.m. as his mother screamed bloody murder at anyone and everyone she saw.

"I will never have another child for as long as I live!" She screeched and kept true to her word as she did not live very long after that day.

"You killed your mother." The distraught father said to the poor baby that had hardly even learnt about the English alphabet yet enough to understand what he meant.

He did repeat that every year though so the boy did not have to worry about missing what he wanted to say to him that time.

Average in studies and even more average in looks, the poor boy's entire life was filled with painful averageness. Now, while that may be a sad thing for everyone else, it is still for him but we will get to that, he quite liked the way he lived.

From the day to day classes in his school to going to home an almost empty house, life was good.

Now, about the almost empty home part, his sister stayed with him under the guise that she wanted a house of her own and she wanted her brother to stay with her. Not because he and his father would argue every second they even made eye contact or breathed in each other's general direction.

Their father lived in another house with his new wife while the two step-siblings stayed in their own house that the sister bought.

They had to struggle quite a bit growing up and only began to accumulate some kind of wealth when his father remarried. She is an heiress of a large company and his father ran that with her now.

He seems to be doing good for himself so the boy could not care less about what happens to him or who he decides to marry again.

As long as he was out of the loop.

Now, one would have presumed that the sister was younger. Like a cute little sister, almost clingy to the point that it got a little bit annoying but that was not it.

He never wanted a sibling before but he did have an idea of what he wanted if he did have a sibling and she ticked none of the boxes.

She was at least ten years older than him with a very stable job of her own and was making bucks. So much that he could have an array of games all stacked up like books in a library in his room.

They had a maid and a cook, though the maid only ever made him clean his own room and the cook gave him only the healthiest of foods.

He wanted to be unhealthy to the point that his skin began to break out from having soda for breakfast and potato chips for lunch.

But he couldn't help that he liked vegetables. He couldn't help that he hated all those fizzy drinks. They never went down his throat properly and always came out of his nose when he tried to drink them.

Potato chips were fine but they did not last long and he was back with his vegetables again. Like a wierdo.

It was such a shame too because he was a loser, those characters in mangas that were not even worth drawing a face on. Just with good skin.

He did wonder what it would be like to be cool and gave up on that the moment he saw how tiring it could be just to make eye contact with someone for more than a minute.

He never succeeded and girls never did catch his interest. Unless they were 2-D ones. They did not take much effort and he was fine investing his time in them.

Yes, he seems pathetic. That is because he is.

But aren't we all pathetic in our own minds? Especially if we are the kind of people that like to look inward. Philosophically.

Anyway, everything was about to change for him soon. It is his last year as a high school student and the last couple of days of his summer vacation as well. He was lounging around the house in his pyjamas.

"Good morning." His sister greeted, smiling brightly at him from her seat on the dining table.

An array of dishes were right in front of her as she ate, while dressed in a suit. Her hair done in a bun and her tie loosened.

"Good morning." He answered back, yawning as he scratched the back of his head. "What is for breakfast? I'm starving."

He pulled out a chair as he sat down and looked around him, still a little bit blank.

"It is nice that you are so hungry." She said, smiling at him kindly. "But I don't think there is going to be breakfast for you."

"Why not? I didn't wake up too late." The boy said, indicating to the darkness outside. "It is still dark."

"I know." She said, putting the fork and knife down on the table as she waved her hands and the maid came in, bringing in another array of food on a tray.

"Thank you." He smiled up at the woman. "This smells divine."

"The chef will be happy to hear that." His sister turned to him, smiling as she rested her elbow on the table and chin on her hand.

"Where did you even find him? He is good enough for a Michelin star restaurant." The boy said, devouring everything as fast as he could.

"Well, I heard that I was going to have a little brother who thought meat looked freaky and yet loved to eat it and vegetables as well. So I had to find someone to help make something he liked to eat."

"You didn't have to do that." He said, playing with the food on his plate. "And I do not find meat freaky. I am just not used to the taste because we could not buy them before."

"If you say so." She laughed, putting her arms up in defeat. "I did not see you for most of your summer break, what were you doing?"

"My friends and I were busy gaming. The newest update came out on D*ta and I am obsessed with the new skins." He said, excitedly before clearing his throat. "Speaking of new skins, can I-"

"Your pocket money?" She asked, taking a sip of her tea.

"Yes. Can I get next month's one early? There is this new core processor that I need to get and also keyboard ..." He said, trying not to show too much of his excitement as his sister looked at him with an endearing smile.

"I don't know." She said, clearly teasing him. "What will you do if I say that I will give it to you while adding a little more?"

"What do you want me to do?" he asked without hesitation, finishing up everything on his plate.

"Do you remember that game that came out recently? The one everyone's been talking about? The dating one?" She asked as the boy narrowed his eyes at her.

"Yes?" He said cautiously. "Why?"
