Chapter 8 People's Police_1

Sometimes, Albert Coll really did not know what to do with Yetta Astir, he rubbed his throbbing temple and explained with a wry smile, "Yetta, your job as a police captain revolves around interrogations not captures."

"Why affairs of interrogation and not capture, you clearly just think that this task is too difficult; you're scared something will happen to me and you will not be able to explain to my father, dressing it up so grandly." Yetta Astir rolled her eyes dissatisfied, murmuring quietly.

When he heard his plans laid bare, Albert Coll's face turned red and he awkwardly laughed, "I just don't want you to accept this dangerous situation, this task is really too risky."

Yetta Astir declared discontentedly, "Just because the task is so dangerous, that's exactly why I want to go. If I shy away from danger, then how will my team view me? As a team leader I should lead by example, facing danger fearlessly. Commissioner, can you please let me go?"

Watching the fiery-tempered lioness pleading with him so earnestly, Albert Coll found it hard to resist, quickly turning to Rex nervously, saying, "Rex, we'll leave it at that. Yetta Astir is not suitable, go find someone else."

"Hump!" Yetta Astir huffed, unsatisfied. Although she was aggrieved, she could do nothing about the Commissioner's decision, discontentedly stomping her foot.

Albert Coll helplessly shook his head, watching Yetta Astir in her anger. Old Astir's daughter truly was uniquely headstrong. Not content to remain in the office, always wanting to involve herself with such dangerous operations; if she got involved and something went wrong, any regret would be too late.

Albert Coll was preparing to go and ask the special police for a situation update, but his secretary, panting heavily, ran up to inform him, "Commissioner, local city officials have been alerted of the situation and have specifically sent Secretary Astir to supervise the operation."

Secretary Astir was Yetta Astir's father, the city's deputy secretary, Will Astir. Will Astir and Albert Coll used to be part of the same team in their early years and had a strong bond as brothers in private. However, now that Will Astir acted as Albert Coll's superior, his arrival to personally supervise the operation was a matter of concern. Albert Coll didn't dare to dally and hastily followed the guide to meet Will Astir.

When Will Astir heard the news, he raced over at lightning speed from the conference venue. Getting straight out of the car and onto the scene, he went up to Albert Coll, shook his hand, and asked urgently, "Albert, what's the current situation like? Secretary Buck and Mayor are very concerned about the situation here."

"Thank you for the concern of the city leaders. Although we have the robbers surrounded, but…" Albert Coll shook his head, sighing resignedly, "but they have so many hostages that we can't act rashly."

"No matter what, you must ensure the safety of every hostage." Will Astir sternly declared.

"Yes, yes, we will do our best to rescue the hostages." Albert Coll quickly nodded in agreement.

Will Astir nodded with satisfaction, his expression softening slightly, and whispered, "Albert, I'll give you a heads up! This kidnapping has attracted the attention of the province. If there are any mistakes in our handling of it, not only will your position as Police Commissioner be at risk, my position as Deputy Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee will also be jeopardized. Albert, it doesn't matter if we lose our posts, but being remembered as scapegoats, causing disgrace to our ancestors and heads of our children to bow in shame, that would be unbearable."

Albert Coll nodded solemnly, looking grave as he said, "Old Astir, you're right, we cannot become historical villains, causing our future generations to hang their heads low."

"I'm glad you understand." Will Astir smiled contentedly, and continued, "Do you already have a hostage rescue plan?"

Upon hearing Will Astir's question, Albert Coll nodded, "The head of the Criminal Investigation Department, Rex, has thought of a way, but hasn't found a suitable candidate yet."

"First tell me the plan." Will Astir handed Albert Coll a "Panda cigarette" and spoke slowly.

Albert Coll quickly outlined Rex's plan, causing Will Astir to nod his approval incessantly, "This plan is not bad, worth a try."

Albert Coll spread his hands, sighed in resignation, "I know this plan is feasible, but we don't have a suitable candidate. To make the robbers let their guard down, we have to send a woman."

"Hmm!" Will Astir nodded, turned to Albert Coll, and said, "It is indeed difficult to find such a suitable woman. But, Yetta seems quite competent, right?"

When he heard these words from Will Astir, Albert Coll was shocked and asked incredulously, "Old Astir, this mission is unlike any other, a slight mistake inside could not only jeopardize the rescue, but also lead to a life-threatening danger. Yetta is your ..."

"But she's also a people's police officer." Will Astir declared solemnly, "Initially, when the brat wanted to enroll in the police academy, her mother and I disapproved, but she eventually convinced us and became an honorable police officer. Since she's a police officer, it's her duty to protect people's lives and property with practical actions."

"But…" Albert Coll was about to say something, but Will Astir waved him off.

"Albert, you don't have to say anything more. If Yetta is the most suitable candidate, pick her. I have faith Yetta won't let us down." Will Astir waved his hand lightly, the only indication of how much his heart was aching.

Albert Coll heaved a sigh, looked wistfully at Will Astir and said, "Old Astir, to be truthful Yetta came to me right after she heard the plan, asking to be tasked with it, but I refused her because I was worried if something happened to her, you would blame me. But it seems like my worrying was undue…"

….

"So, you're the one who called the police?" the hostage-taker coldly interrogated.

Lydia White declared calmly, "If you have to pin the blame on someone, then make it me. Let the mother and child go, I'm ready to die in their stead."

"You're not afraid of death?" The robber sneered, he didn't believe the beautiful woman in white before him was truly unafraid of death.

Lydia White didn't answer him, she calmly said, "You said as long as someone steps forward and admits they reported the robbery, you'll let the hostages go. I'm admitting it now, please keep your promise and let them go."

"Since you're not afraid of death, I'll grant you that." The lead robber signaled to his men, "Release the girl and her mother."

The little girl, now liberated, couldn't wait to run to her mother and cried loudly in her mother's arms.

The young mother gently patted her daughter's head, her eyes filled with tears as she said to Lydia, "Thank you. But you didn't have to do this."

Lydia gave the young mother a smile, speaking softly, "Take good care of your child."

The lead robber slowly aimed his gun at Lydia, who closed her eyes as if waiting for death to come.

Just at the critical moment, Basil Jaak suddenly stood up from the floor and said to the robbers with a smile, "You've been tricked!"

Lydia thought that she was surely going to die, but then Basil Jaak suddenly jumped in. She turned her head and looked at the playboy who had taken advantage of her, she was surprised to see him defending her now.

"What did you just say?" The robber asked Basil Jaak with a frown. Thankfully, he had lowered his gun from Lydia.

Basil Jaak grinned and repeated, "I said you were tricked by her. She's not the one who alerted the police." With that, Basil Jaak pouted, looking like an innocent big boy.

The robber squinted and asked Basil Jaak, "How do you know she's not the one who alerted the police?"

"Look at her clumsy demeanour, how could she be the one who sneaked in a call to the police? A person with a high IQ like me is more likely to pull off something that difficult, right?" Basil Jaak said with a silly grin.

"So, you're the one who reported the robbery then?" The robber asked.

Basil Jaak shook his head and replied seriously, "I was just saying it's possible, I didn't say I was the one who called the police!"

"Are you messing with me, kid?" The robber growled.

Basil Jaak shrugged and said innocently, "I don't have the guts to mess with you guys. I just don't think anyone could have reported the crime under your surveillance."

The robber scoffed, "So what you're saying is, those cops have some kind of clairvoyant powers, knowing beforehand we were going to commit a crime today?"

"If that were the case, the police wouldn't be hiding outside," Basil Jaak replied earnestly.

"Boss, this guy is clearly messing with us. Let me finish him off first," bro urged his boss.

"Hold on!" The lead robber gestured and asked Basil Jaak, "So, according to you, who did call the police? It can't be that the police already knew, could it?"

"You hit the nail on the head." Basil Jaak pointed towards the camera by the door and said to the robbers, "You covered up the surveillance in the lobby when you came in, but forgot about the one by the door. Its main purpose was to monitor illegal parking, but it happened to catch you guys."

Hearing Basil Jaak's words, the lead robber signalled to Bro to check outside, and sure enough, there was an inconspicuous surveillance camera.

"You believe me now?" Basil Jaak said with a "wronged" expression.

"You're quite smart, it's just a shame..." The lead robber hadn't finished his sentence when the cops outside started to shout again. It annoyed him so much that he coldly ordered, "Bro, bring a hostage out to negotiate with those annoying cops, tell them if they want the hostages inside to live, then they need to bring a car."

"Alright!" Bro wanted to take advantage of the chance to have his way with Lydia, so when he heard his boss's words, he quickly rushed towards Lydia.

But halfway there, Lydia said coldly, "If you come closer, I'll commit suicide."

"Stinking bitch, don't overstep your bounds. I'm treating you as a hostage, it's a privilege," bro angrily said, about to forcibly subdue her. But he heard his boss shout, "Bro, leave that woman alone, take another hostage. After we move all the money, you can have any woman you want."

Bro agreed and randomly grabbed the Skinny Man, walking out of the bank.
