CHAPTER FOUR

Elena stood there confused, unsure of what to think or feel.

Elena, i mean Courtney.

It wasn't her.

What was June talking about? It's my job anyways.

Since when did June have a job? Since when did any student of Dawson High have a part time job?

"Oh Elena," June said, coming out of the toilet, obviously surprised to see her. She looked startled. "What are you doing here?"

Was she supposed to ask her? She didn't know what to say.

"I just came to wash my hands. I was about to go meet you in the cafeteria."

"Oh," June flung her hands around her shoulders. "Okay, cool. Where have you been by the way?"

"Just the library. Um...who were you talking to you?" Elena asked, almost scared of what next.

"Oh that," she replied, almost laughing lightly. "My Dad."

False.

"Your dad stays at Ireland, doesn't he?

"Yes, he does. Of course, yes" She replied, her voice seeming somewhat nervous. "Duh. He called all the way from Ireland."

False.

Ever since Elena had known June, she was made to believe that both her parents stayed in Ireland and that she stays with a distant relative. Her dad had also never called her.

"Oh," Elena said, suspiciously. "And who's Courtney?"

"Oh, Courtney is my cousin," June replied. "She looks so much like you I always mix your names up."

False.

"Oh, really?"

"Yeah!" She said dropping her hands on her shoulder.

False.

"By the way, just long were you standing outside? How much did you listen? Why were you eaves dropping anyways?" June was beginning to sound really suspicious. She wasn't eavesdropping or had any intention to eavesdrop. It was purely coincidental.

"Why are you getting so worked up?" Elena fired. "I wasn't eavesdropping. what's there to eavesdrop on anyways."

June exhaled. "I know right. I'm sorry just forget it."

Elena fake smiled. "Anyways, I want to meet Courtney. She better be just as cool as I am or even way cooler."

"Of course," she laughed playfully slapping Elena's shoulders. "Let's go."

"Sure."

---

Elena left school later than usual. She didn't want to go with the school bus- she just wanted to walk home, alone.

Her hands clutched onto her backpack like her life depended on it. Her mind was totally messed up. June's phone call in the toilet kept on replaying in her mind.

It all suddenly seemed to make sense, and at the same time suddenly became more confusing.

June Rivers, what the hell are you?

Elena ran her hand through her hair. She wasn't sure she knew who she was either anymore.

She brought out her phone to text Luke.

Elena: Hey

Almost immediately, he replied her.

Luke❤: Where are you?

Elena texted her address back to him as she found a place to sit waiting for him.

She spotted him coming, his arms wide open. She stood up, walked towards him as she threw herself into him. He buried her in a hug as she just kept on groaning.

He was probably also on his way back home from school. His backpack was still hanging on his shoulders and he smelt of sweat.

"Who? Or What?" He asked when she had broken free from his hug.

She sighed. "June's driving me crazy."

"Mhmm."

"Firstly, she isn't seventeen," she bit her lip as she started.

"Why am I not surprised?"

She told him everything that had happened. Everything that had happened at school.

"Why do I feel you're the Courtney she was talking about?" He asked, sitting up.

"Me? Courtney?" Elena was beyond puzzled. Courtney was June's mysterious cousin that lived on the other side of the earth. "My name is Elena so what are you talking about?"

"I'm just trying to think this through."

"Oh?"

"It's making sense pretty well. I mean, at first June introduces herself and you and your fairy head mother tells you false," he started, Elena almost laughing at the name given to the voice in her head. "Then you figure out that June isn't seventeen and then, you overhear her talking to a certain someone about her monitoring Elena I mean Courtney and she says that's her job?"

"I have a job too," she replied, trying not to think. "Dealing with you is just a whole job."

Luke simply stared at her.

"What?"

"I don't know," he huffed. "I really don't."

True.

"A puzzle eh?"

"I guess," he replied, obviously just as confused as she was.

Elena groaned as she leaned to rest her head on his shoulders, Luke reciprocating the action. "I don't want to think about it, honestly."

They remained in that position for a while.

"Ah, yes. Guess what?!" Elena said, excitedly, raising her head from his shoulder.

"I don't know."

"I met Daniel at the library today," Elena smiled, as the memory came back. "And he helped me with maths. He also said he'll love to be helping me."

"Just when I thought you could get better in maths," he said, a sneer on his face.

"And what is that supposed to mean?" She asked, her hands on her hips.

"You won't pay attention. How would your crush tutor you? You'd be drooling all through," he stated, blankly. He honestly hoped she'd get better in maths but with Daniel as her tutor, she was no better than a lost cause.

"I hate you," Elena scoffed. "Nope. I'm going to concentrate. I concentrate. It has gotten easier already."

"Mhm. Mhm," he replied. "Anything less than a B, I'm shaving your eyebrows."

"Yes sir," she laughed as she returned her head back to his shoulders.

"Elena?"

"Yeah?" She replied, playing with her tie.

"Forget it."

"Don't make me murder you, Luke."

"You know you can't."

True.

"Try me."

They remained silent for a while again until Luke broke it again.

"Elena?"

"Just what is it?" she groaned. "If you have something to say just say it already and stop whining."

"Okay, fine."

"Yeah?"

"Don't get mad."

"I'm mad already."

He paused for a while, exhaled then said. "Your name is Courtney."

True.
