"Personal note: sorry about the glitch, hope you can get this whole thing sorted out."
personal score: 5/5
webnovel's scores are different from my own. So those of you reading this please know that the score above is fully by webnovel standards.
The reason I do this is that when I disagree with a score I can explain why 'I' liked the story and people who don't read reviews will miss out on the nuance in my reviews. Now to the book!
Alice, Angel of Mercy is fundamentally a Isekai Story. It's the same setup as all the others. Bla bla reasons, bla bla Video Games, bla bla Another World.
But the details are in the setup and how it affects the story going forward. That's Right! The Real World Affects The Plot!
The MC is a paraliziac and signs his life, if you can call living in a machine strapped up like a lab experiment by Dr. Frankenstein living, away to beta test a new virtual reality video game.
Ten points if you can guess what happens next?
[ ] Everything Tunrs Out Well
[ ] An Evil AI gets loose in the real World
[ ] An Evil corporation, Duh!?!?
[ ] None of the above.
[ ] All of the above.
Yea, so The Video Game Company pulls a Argus, and our un-witting protagonist is thrust into a knock off swords and sorcery parody world. With their concent on the dotted line of course.
So, like I said standard right, but here's where it gets good. Alice has conflict that drives the story forward, and resolution on those elements in the short and long term. And I is very clear that Alice, the character not the book, isn't the center of the universe. Her world is a MMO and because of that she literally can't do everything. Plus she's a healer, her job on the battlefield is to keep people alive not deal damage. So fights in this story are a bit more tense not for the fact that Alice might die, but that she might fail her roll and someone else might.
So,
Alice, the book again, has a protagonist that isn't the center of the world, A fight system where teamwork is mandatory for success, and Consequences for the heros and villain in the story.
What happens when you mix them all up? You get something fresh. Fresh and good and it makes you feel good.
