Chen Ruoxi's Conspiracy

In the blink of an eye, April is upon us, and the harsh winter has passed. The Feng Kingdom, nestled in the south, now blossoms with vibrant life; grass sprouts and birds take flight, filling the air with the fresh, verdant fragrance unique to spring.

Within the Xinyang Palace, a chill lingers in the air. Despite the pleasant weather and the brilliant sunshine, the atmosphere remains desolate. Only a gentle breeze, imbued with sunlight, stirs. Feng Jiulan and Jun Pinyu sit together in a pavilion, bathed in the warm light that dances upon the lake's surface, where fish swim freely in the clear water, sparkling under the sun without a hint of glare.

Over the past month, Feng Jiulan has lost considerable weight, his gaunt face evoking deep sympathy. His pallid complexion bears no trace of color, and he dons dark garments, standing against the backdrop of blossoming pear trees. A faint, fragile smile graces his lips, eliciting a pang of compassion, as he stands by the riverbank, the wind tugging at his clothes as if it might carry him away.

Jun Pinyu sits at the round table in the pavilion, quietly savoring tea and relishing the rare moment of sunlight. Observing Feng Jiulan standing by the lake, his warm gaze flickers with sorrowful empathy. The people of the Feng Kingdom dote on their beloved sister, and this is well known. Yet, who understands the trials these siblings have endured for each other? They might perceive the Feng King and the prominence of the kingdom as elevated, enjoying the adoration of many—especially Xianyue, whose beauty is unparalleled and whose honor is esteemed. Yet, deep down, they might long for a simpler existence, one of health and peace like ordinary folk.

"Pinyu, how much longer do you think I can endure?" Feng Jiulan's voice is a mere whisper, laced with a subtle sigh. Facing away from Jun Pinyu, he remains oblivious to the sunlit visage that appears almost translucent, devoid of any blemish.

Leaning against a pillar, he gazes at the fish frolicking in the river, his clear eyes flickering with a trace of envy as pure as pear blossoms. Due to his condition, he has long since renounced all desires for himself. Over the years, his greatest wish has been to see Xianyue once more. Thus, each time illness strikes, even in the depths of agony, he perseveres. This time, he yearns to survive and witness Xianyue's happiness. Yet suddenly, he feels the strength fading from his body, as if all his vitality has been spent.

Jun Pinyu rises and moves beside Feng Jiulan, a pang of anguish in his heart as he sighs softly. Once, he had grown accustomed to the cycles of life and death, believing he would no longer be affected by anyone's suffering. Yet, witnessing Feng Jiulan's silent endurance stirs a lump in his throat; the hardships these siblings bear are too great.

"I cannot guarantee anything, but I will do everything in my power to ensure that His Highness witnesses Xianyue's happiness," Jun Pinyu declares.

Though their time together has been brief, he is acutely aware of Feng Jiulan's desires: the peace and joy of Xianyue are all he yearns to see.

"Have the medicines been prepared?" Feng Jiulan's voice is frail, echoing his own frail spirit. Closing his eyes, he imagines himself, which only deepens his sorrow. This man, among the five great nobles, is the kindest of them all, and all his strength is dedicated to his sister. Such sibling affection is difficult for others to comprehend.

"Soon. This time, it should succeed," Jun Pinyu replies, brimming with confidence, yet still hesitant to assure him. Xianyue's love charms have fused with her very essence, making them difficult to extract.

"And what of me? Pinyu, I long to live on. Even if I must endure torment, do you think I can wait until the day Xianyue's child calls me 'uncle'?" A radiant smile graces Feng Jiulan's face at the thought of becoming an uncle.

After their mother passed shortly after giving birth to Xianyue, their father viewed her as an enemy. Over the years, Xianyue has endured so much suffering; now that she has finally attained happiness, she must be tormented in her heart. She loves Lan Yixuan so deeply, yet prioritizes herself above all, leading to such a decision—she must be in agony. How foolish of her to give up happiness! Even without Jun Pinyu's efforts, he would not live much longer. To remain by her side and witness his waning, painful state must be unbearable. Thus, Xianyue need only secure her future with Lan Yixuan, transferring her feelings for him onto another and building a home with the Lan King; that alone would make her happy.

"Yes, I will ensure that His Highness lives on," Jun Pinyu responds, his voice laced with emotion and helplessness.

Feng Jiulan turns slightly and smiles, his weak grin akin to petals in bloom, ready to fall at the slightest breeze. "Pinyu, do you harbor resentment towards her? Resent her for her cruel methods and ruthless nature? In battle, it is a matter of life and death. Do not blame Xianyue; her heart bears its own burdens."

Jun Pinyu remains silent, fists clenched tightly. He recalls the tragic demise of the Xuanyuan soldiers in the Biluo River and closes his eyes in pain. Those were the lives of three hundred thousand warriors. This battle shattered countless happy families, and upon hearing the news, he shattered his medicinal bowl in shock, engulfed by profound fear and disappointment.

For years, he has endured exile for Xuanyuan's sake, even orchestrating Xianyue's near demise with his own hands. His heart had shattered then, yet this was his life—he would give everything for Xuanyuan. He believed in Xuanyuan Hao, trusted his ambitious brother, yet the outcome was unforeseen. Perhaps fate had already sealed their paths; this world belongs neither to him nor to Xuanyuan. No matter their efforts, they could not alter their destinies. Just as Xianyue said, it was they who had pushed her toward Lan Yixuan.

Is there hatred? No, rather an overwhelming shock. The audacity of such a woman, devising a scheme to scorch the enemy's fleet without losing a single soldier, decimating Xuanyuan's three hundred thousand troops. Such ruthlessness may seem cruel, but she is not at fault. In warfare, mercy to the enemy is cruelty to oneself. There is but one world, and everyone must rely on their own strength. Had Xuanyuan Hao been in her position, he would have acted similarly. If there is to be hatred, it lies only with himself, regretting that he was not present at Biluo River to stand beside those warriors. Had he been there, perhaps such a tragedy would not have unfolded. Everything seems too strange; Xuanyuan underestimated Xianyue, and Xuanyuan Hao's greatest mistake was his relentless pursuit of victory, sacrificing emotions along the way. He yearned to prove himself to Xianyue, desperately wanting to win, and in doing so, lost to her flawless cunning. From the very beginning, this battle was fated for Xuanyuan's defeat, for Xuanyuan Hao succumbed to feelings for Xianyue, and such devotion cannot be disregarded.

Yet he knows she suffers. Though she may not be inherently virtuous, she is not truly cruel. To him, it matters little who wields power in this world. After years of wandering, witnessing countless exiled families torn apart, he merely wishes for someone to help them regain a peaceful existence. It need not be Xuanyuan Hao; he simply hopes for a chance to assist them, and he has already done all he could. What he cannot do, he has resolutely accepted, and now, such matters have become irrelevant to him.

"No," Jun Pinyu reflects for a long moment, pursing his lips before shaking his head with a gentle smile. "I blame no one."

His voice is calm. After years of traversing the martial world, he has yet to forge genuine friendships, save for Xianyue. However, during this period, he has opened his heart to Feng Jiulan, who proves to be a comforting yet heart-wrenching figure.

"I have repaid my debt to Xuanyuan Hao, and the affairs of the world are no longer my concern. Those matters were never within my control. Who shall rise or fall depends on merit alone. For now, I owe Xianyue; I have wronged her once. Everything I do now is to atone for that. Your Highness, I will not let anything happen to you. Even if Yama demands your life, I shall wrest it back from his grasp."

"Life and death are fated. As long as I know Xianyue will be well, I shall be content. Ultimately, all she does is for me. She bears a heavy burden upon her shoulders, which is a debt I owe as her brother."

Compared to Jun Pinyu, Feng Jiulan's sorrow weighs heavily upon him, as well. He understands that Xianyue must find her methods cruel, yet she remains resolute in her decisions. However, at this moment, neither he nor Lan Yixuan stands by her side, and the thought brings him anguish.

"Qinghen."

Feng Jiulan turned, softly calling out as Yun Qinghen hurriedly entered. Upon witnessing Feng Jiulan's state, her heart ached with sympathy. In times past, after the prince had succumbed to illness, although his body would weaken, he never appeared quite like this—devoid of vitality, bathed in sunlight, resembling a crystal droplet that seemed ready to evaporate at any moment.

"Have someone deliver this to King Lan," Feng Jiulan said, retrieving a pre-written letter from his bosom and handing it to Yun Qinghen.

"Your Highness."

Yun Qinghen lifted her gaze to meet Feng Jiulan's, feeling as though this delicate envelope weighed a thousand pounds. "Your Highness, you will surely recover."

Feng Jiulan smiled gently, "Regardless of the outcome, it is imperative to clarify matters. Do you remember what I told you before? No matter what transpires in the future, I do not wish for Yue'er to witness me in this state."

In his current condition, even Qinghen found it hard to bear; Yue'er would undoubtedly struggle to accept it. She longed for him to remain as she remembered—radiant and beautiful as a pear blossom.

"Go," Yun Qinghen bit her lip, observing Feng Jiulan's resolute demeanor as she turned to leave. If that day ever came when the prince departed, how could she bear it? Even if she were to be with King Lan, her life would be devoid of true happiness.

"Have you truly made up your mind?"

Jun Pinyu noted the resoluteness in Feng Jiulan's expression, sensing a crack in his formerly steadfast stance. He understood somewhat the thoughts swirling in Feng Jiulan's mind. The bond between the two siblings ran deep; they loved each other fiercely and would sacrifice everything for one another.

Feng Jiulan had given all his affection to Xianyue. The accident over a decade ago had left him with lingering ailments, and to this day, Xianyue still suffered in guilt. She had risked her life on numerous occasions for Feng Jiulan, and he felt no less guilty—especially knowing the hardships she had endured throughout the years. As a brother who cherished his sister, he never wished for Xianyue to shoulder the burdens of the world. He wanted nothing more than for her to lead a simple and ordinary life. Yet, reality did not align with his wishes. In a royal family so sparse in numbers, with only a weak prince and a single princess, how could he bear to send Xianyue into the battlefield? This kind-hearted, gentle man would find killing unbearable. As Xianyue had remarked, he was a man as pure as a pear blossom, destined to remain untainted. Such a man was inherently unsuited for slaughter, but if given the choice, he would gladly be the one to stain his hands with blood.

"Your Highness, why do you trust me?"

He had nearly caused Xianyue's death, genuinely intending to do so at that time. With so long without news, he had even feared she was lost to him forever. Given how much Feng Jiulan cared for and ached for Xianyue, should he not harbor hatred towards him instead? Why did he continue to place his trust in him, even entrusting his life? He could not fathom it.

"Because you love Yue'er," Jun Pinyu replied. "Your eyes reveal too much helplessness. As Yue'er said, everyone is born with their own burdens and cannot shirk them. The past is behind us, and thanks to you, Yue'er has found her happiness. I am grateful to you for providing her with someone else to lean on, someone I can trust."

Jun Pinyu gazed at Feng Jiulan, whose gentle smile radiated warmth that few could resist.

"Pinyu, I truly wish to see Yue'er once more, to hear her call me brother." Recently, memories of their childhood had surfaced in his dreams—fleeting images growing clearer with each passing night. If only, during his birthday banquet that year, he had kept her by his side, perhaps everything would have been different now.

Jun Pinyu sighed, a pang of sorrow piercing his heart as he approached Feng Jiulan from behind. "Then rest well. There's a breeze by the lake; you should go indoors."

"Princess."

The green-clad attendant bowed respectfully, presenting a small booklet to Xianyue, who accepted it and began to read intently.

"Four years ago, Xuanyuan He had already assumed all authority from the Xuanyuan monarch; he is the true power behind the throne. The Xuanyuan faction is divided into three camps, led by Prime Minister Wang Hongming and General Qu Zhaochen, among others. These factions largely follow Xuanyuan He, who has evidently favored Qu Zhao in recent years. Wang Hongming and others, wary of Xuanyuan He's authority and tactics, have not dared to act. There's also a faction represented by Chen Shenjing, comprising knowledgeable individuals who are fair-minded and possess their own influence, who hold Xuanyuan He in high esteem."

Green-clad lifted her gaze to Xianyue, whose eyes sparkled with cunning intelligence, the corners of her lips curving upwards as if plotting something: "Is that all? What is his relationship with the concubines in the harem and other princes?"

"Among all the princes, he and the fifth prince share the same mother. The fifth prince is known for his vicious and brutal nature, drawing significant discontent from the populace and court alike. Chen Shen, the representative of the middle faction, has suggested demoting him to commoner status, even sending him to remote regions. Xuanyuan He, a filial son, has refrained from punishment out of concern for Consort Lian, whose domineering character has also generated discontent within the harem."

Xianyue responded with a soft "Hmm," suddenly recalling something as she gazed out at the brilliant sunlight. She chuckled, closing the booklet, her features lighting up with a sense of elation, as if she had spotted a cunning fox ready to seize its prey, brimming with confidence.

"Princess, your smile is reminiscent of a fox preparing to steal."

Yilan fixed her eyes on Xianyue, voicing her thoughts candidly.

"You guessed correctly."

Xianyue beamed at Yilan, her joy contagious.

Green-clad sighed, "With the war looming, the common people will suffer. Many have fled from Nanyan and Baichu recently, and many have perished from starvation or freezing along the way."

As the one responsible for gathering intelligence, she knew these facts all too well. Aware of the sorrow of uprooting, she understood that not everyone was as fortunate as she. Furthermore, during this battle at Biluo River, the Xuanyuan casualties had been staggering. Although the princess appeared unchanged, she likely bore the weight of all burdens in her heart.

"The world operates on the principle of the survival of the fittest. This is simply how it is; people are innately ambitious, and lamenting it serves no purpose. Green-clad, don't dwell on sorrow."

In contrast to the melancholic Green-clad, Lvzhu remained remarkably composed: "To stop the war, we must first defeat Xuanyuan. If we can conquer him, peace will follow. This time, the Xuanyuan losses have been severe. Princess, why don't we press our advantage?"

Xianyue turned to Lvzhu, a smile gracing her lips. "To press our advantage and risk mutual destruction?"

She set the booklet aside. "Though they have lost so many comrades at once, their hearts are undoubtedly heavy, but Xuanyuan is not so easily dealt with. A grieving army is a valiant one. If he resolves to fight to the bitter end, neither side will benefit. In this world, how many are driven by ambition? War can never be avoided. The peace of these years was not due to the Zhou Dynasty, but rather the mutual checks between Xuanyuan and Lan Kingdom. No one side could dominate. If we suffer severe losses this time, other nations will seize the opportunity to reclaim lost territories. That is when true chaos will ensue. Such a significant loss, once is enough."

Xianyue sighed, beckoning Green-clad with a gesture. "Come here, Green-clad."

Green-clad approached Xianyue, who spoke quietly to her. The others could only observe as a smile emerged on Green-clad's previously sorrowful face, resembling a little fox trained by Xianyue. Lvzhu, Yilan, and the others, unable to contain their curiosity, drew closer. Once Xianyue had finished, she stood and patted Green-clad's shoulder. "You will handle this matter."

Afterward, she produced a token from her bosom and handed it to her. "This is the insignia of the former leader of the martial arts alliance; it will prove useful."

Green-clad accepted it, her eyes shining brightly with a clear, radiant light. The onlookers turned to Xianyue. "Princess, what did you just say to Green-clad?"

Xianyue smiled, her gaze sweeping across them. "Do you want to know?"

The others nodded eagerly, and Xuan Yue stood up with a smile, her eyes cautiously scanning the surroundings. The others moved in closer, and Xuan Yue let out a soft giggle, placing her index finger on her lips and whispering, "Secret."

Disappointment washed over the group as they were about to complain and inquire further when Ya'er, who had been guarding the door, suddenly rushed in, exclaiming, "Princess, Madam Bai wishes to see you."

No sooner had Ya'er finished speaking than Chen Ruoxi swept aside the curtain and entered. Observing the young women gathered around Xuan Yue, all vibrant and full of life, she felt a pang of age creep into her heart despite their similar youth. After a moment's pause, she recalled the purpose of her visit, took a deep breath, and approached Xuan Yue, saying, "I wish to speak with you privately."

The smiles faded from Yi Lan and the others' faces as they regarded Chen Ruoxi with suspicion. Madam Bai held affection for the eldest son of the Bai family, while he remained devoted to their princess; such a meeting could hardly bode well.

"You may leave for now," Xuan Yue instructed Green Pearl and the others. "Stand guard at the door; no one is to enter without my command."

Reluctantly, Green Pearl and the others cast a wary glance at Chen Ruoxi. Assured that she posed no danger to Xuan Yue, they departed.

"What does Madam Bai wish to discuss with me?" Xuan Yue asked.

She stood on her toes, lifted her leg, and seated herself on the windowsill, leaning back against the ledge with a raised eyebrow and a playful smile. Despite the seemingly crude posture, it exuded an air of leisure.

"Miss Xuan Yue," Chen Ruoxi called gently, standing before the windowsill, her delicate brows furrowed in concern. She placed a hand on her abdomen, looked up, and declared with newfound resolve, "I am pregnant."

Xuan Yue's gaze flickered to Chen Ruoxi's midsection. The weather was still chilly, and fearing the cold, she had dressed warmly. Coupled with her slender figure and loose clothing, the pregnancy was not immediately obvious.

Xuan Yue nodded, her expression unperturbed. "Congratulations."

Her smile was sincere and heartfelt, devoid of any trace of disappointment. She had learned of this development from Bai Zhanfeng two weeks prior and felt genuinely happy for them. With this child, Bai Zhanfeng would bear greater responsibility, and his relationship with Chen Ruoxi would surely improve.

Chen Ruoxi's composed demeanor took Xuan Yue by surprise. Biting her lip and clutching the hem of her dress, she appeared flustered. "As the queen of Feng and the queen consort of Lan, your every move is under the world's scrutiny. I know that Bai Zhanfeng has feelings for you. If you care for him, why did you choose the King of Lan? Now that you have chosen him and become the queen consort, you must take responsibility for your actions and devote yourself entirely to the King. Moreover, as I am with child, I hope you will maintain your dignity. For the sake of the crown prince of Feng and the citizens of both kingdoms, you should keep your distance from Bai Zhanfeng. They do not wish to hear any rumors that could tarnish your reputation."

The words flowed from her lips, rehearsed and uninterrupted. Her complexion flushed slightly, her demeanor growing more austere. She understood that Xuan Yue was not that type of person, yet today, she felt compelled to voice her concerns; otherwise, she would truly go mad—if not mad, she was already on the brink.

Xuan Yue leaned against the windowsill, her gaze fixed outside. Only when Chen Ruoxi finished speaking did she turn, her smile unwavering and devoid of displeasure.

She jumped down from the windowsill, casually brushing her hands together. "Has Madam Bai finished speaking?"

Chen Ruoxi instinctively stepped back as Xuan Yue pivoted, appearing before her in the blink of an eye. Chen Ruoxi gasped and stumbled backward, nearly falling against the table. Protectively cradling her abdomen, Xuan Yue swiftly caught her, helping her to a chair at the table. She poured a cup of tea and offered it to Chen Ruoxi. "After all that talk, you must be thirsty. Here, have some tea to calm your nerves."

Chen Ruoxi stared at the cup of tea Xuan Yue had handed her, her gaze drifting upward to meet Xuan Yue's cheerful smile. Her hands fidgeted nervously in her lap, clutching her skirt tightly without reaching out to take the tea.

Xuan Yue chuckled nonchalantly. "Are you worried it's poisoned?"

She withdrew her hand, swirling the tea in her own cup. The pale green leaves danced gracefully in the clear liquid. Despite her anxiety, Chen Ruoxi's face retained its dignified coldness—an inherent pride that emanated from her family's lineage, unyielding and impervious.

"I happen to be thirsty as well. I shall—"

Xuan Yue raised the teacup to her lips, but before she could finish, Chen Ruoxi suddenly stood up, snatching the cup from her hand. She tipped her head back and, with a satisfying gurgle, drained the tea in an instant. She set the cup down on the table and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, fixing Xuan Yue with an intense stare. "I've finished drinking."

Xuan Yue stifled a laugh, pointing at Chen Ruoxi, who took a moment to compose herself. "I was just teasing you, Madam Bai."

Chen Ruoxi bristled with irritation, her eyes widening. "You—"

Having never been toyed with like this before, she found it exasperating. Yet, during her time at the Bai residence, her leisurely disposition had kept her thoughts concealed from everyone.

Xuan Yue's smile faded as she stood, circling around Chen Ruoxi with a knowing gaze. "Madam Bai, you truly harbor strong feelings for Bai Zhanfeng."

Chen Ruoxi huffed in annoyance, aware of the insinuation.

Xuan Yue's amusement deepened, her finger playfully touching her lips as she leaned closer to Chen Ruoxi. "Madam Bai, do I appear to be someone who favors Bai Zhanfeng?"

Her bright, teasing eyes held no malice, leaving Chen Ruoxi momentarily speechless. It was precisely this demeanor that fueled her frustration. Bai Zhanfeng was well aware of her feelings, yet he remained foolishly devoted, while she grappled with the repercussions of her abrupt departure from the Bai residence, bearing the brunt of all the blame. What was she supposed to do to win his heart? Despite her profound love and sacrifice, was it not enough? What must she do to shift his attention to her?

"Fallen petals are indifferent, while flowing waters possess emotion."

Chen Ruoxi sighed, reclaiming her seat at the table. "If you have no feelings for Bai Gongzi, he has now married me. Fighting on the battlefield is a man's duty; why persist in entangling yourself with him?"

"Because I am not only the queen consort of Lan, but also the queen of Feng, and the sister of Feng Jiulan."

Chen Ruoxi hung her head, oblivious to the fleeting shadow that crossed Xuan Yue's radiant smile. Beneath her thick lashes lay a complex blend of resignation and sorrow—emotions Chen Ruoxi could not fathom. This very moment of missed opportunity had driven Xuan Yue to make a choice she would regret for life.

"It is not I who am entangled, but rather you of the Bai family who sought aid from Lan. Without me, do you truly believe that Bai Chu could endure in this world? That the Bai family could persist?"

Chen Ruoxi pressed her lips together tightly, begrudgingly acknowledging that this woman possessed a grace unmatched by others. Her strategy, her intelligence, and her cunning were unparalleled in the realm. Would she simply resign herself to living like this? If she could coexist harmoniously with Bai Zhanfeng, perhaps she could tolerate it. But she bore the title of Madam Bai and carried his child, yet in truth, she felt like nothing. She had had enough; if Bai Chu were destined to fall, so be it. She could not bear the thought of this woman occupying Bai Zhanfeng's thoughts, usurping all the affection that should rightfully belong to her.

Xuan Yue set down her teacup, resting her chin on her hand. "Chen Ruoxi, you are Madam Bai, not Nian Xiaoyu."

Chen Ruoxi fixed her gaze on Xuan Yue. She had repeated this admonition more than once. Her feelings for Chen Ruoxi were less than favorable, bordering on distaste. Were they to face off in battle, caught up in official duties, she would rather not engage with her. Yet now, as the mother of Bai Zhanfeng's child, she sincerely wished for Chen Ruoxi to come to terms with everything, not just for a fleeting moment of consolation but for a future filled with enduring clarity.

"Do you understand?"

Chen Ruoxi bit her lip. "Are you suggesting I should impose my responsibility on him?"

Xuan Yue smiled radiantly and nodded, "It seems that Mrs. Bai knows Bai Zhanfeng very well."

Chen Ruoxi felt a bit embarrassed under Xuan Yue's gaze. Naturally, she had considered this method, especially since becoming pregnant. Every time she mustered the courage to seek out Bai Zhanfeng, she was met with various excuses and a cold dismissal. Since their wedding, he had never touched her—except for that one drunken night. Afterward, he moved out of the Bai residence and into the military camp, making it difficult for her to see him even once. She loved him, yet held onto her pride and self-respect, fearing that even responsibility would not bind him to her but rather drive him away.

"You should know about Bai Zhanfeng and Nian Xiaoyu's history. Chen Ruoxi, you cannot compare to Nian Xiaoyu. In terms of status, the jewel of the martial arts alliance, what do you have that she lacks, being the granddaughter of a prime minister? Her feelings for Bai Zhanfeng are forthright and pure, unbound by constraints. If she deems it worthwhile, what is there to lose in taking a chance?"

Xuan Yue fixed her gaze on the hesitant Chen Ruoxi, guiding her gently. This time, she did not wish to continue debating; she would consider it a good deed for the child of Bai Zhanfeng.

"She has done so much, enduring the mockery of the world, yet still could not win his heart."

Chen Ruoxi sighed softly, her voice low, tinged with guilt and fear.

Xuan Yue waved her finger in front of Chen Ruoxi, shaking her head, "She lost due to her status. If she had already been Bai Zhanfeng's wife or had an engagement with him, perhaps the outcome would have been different."

Xuan Yue struggled to understand why Lan Yixuan and Bai Zhanfeng were drawn to her and why they willingly made such great sacrifices for her. She had never indulged in thoughts of love, leaving her perplexed about relationships. However, she knew that Bai Zhanfeng was a responsible man. After her fall into the Valley of Death, he had worried and despaired. Yet if the same circumstances were to arise again, the result would remain unchanged.

He would not be like Lan Yixuan, who would recklessly grasp her hand and leap with her, for he bore the weight of the Bai family's expectations and the elder Bai's wishes.

Although he had no desire to inherit the Bai family, he had become its head, marrying into the Chen family as per the elder Bai's intentions. All of this was merely to uphold the responsibilities he carried. If Nian Xiaoyu had been a burden from the start, perhaps there would have been no need for the three years of pursuit.

Xuan Yue smiled, almost in sympathy for Nian Xiaoyu. Her sorrow did not stem from Nian Xiaoyu's fate; after all, she was far happier than Chen Ruoxi, having become Bai Zhanfeng's woman. Perhaps there were no regrets, yet the final outcome was surely less than the happiness she now enjoyed.

"Have you ever heard? A woman pursuing a man is like gazing through heavy gauze."

Xuan Yue suddenly leaned closer to Chen Ruoxi, noticing her startled reaction, and laughed lightly, "A good woman fears a persistent wolf, and men are the same. As the legitimate daughter of the Chen family, able to grace the halls and manage the kitchen, possessing both beauty and talent—you are still his wife. Nian Xiaoyu's relentless pursuit of Bai Zhanfeng may earn her the world's scorn, but what do you fear? Following closely behind your husband is what a wife should do; others may ridicule you, but you can stand tall and proud."

Chen Ruoxi stared at Xuan Yue, who radiated with energy; her plain face gleamed like a jewel in the night, impossible to ignore. Had she not witnessed it firsthand, she would scarcely believe such a polished and graceful woman could utter such words.

"Did I scare you?"

Her gentle voice carried a hint of mirth, "If you've fallen for a man who belongs to another, and wish to catch his attention, you must be a bit self-absorbed. Think of it this way: I am so wonderful; why wouldn't he like me? You need a thicker skin than a wall; the more he pushes you away, the more you must cling to him. Initially, heartbreak is unavoidable, but over time, it will become familiar. When you become accustomed to sorrow, he will also become accustomed to having you around."

The ability to doggedly pursue the man she loved felt like immense fortune to her.

Chen Ruoxi gazed at Xuan Yue, swallowing hard, genuinely taken aback by her intensity, biting her lip as she pondered Xuan Yue's words.

Xuan Yue poured herself a glass of water, gulping it down. After so much talking, she indeed felt parched; her stomach also seemed to grumble with hunger.

"Mrs. Bai, she says she's hungry."

Xuan Yue pointed to her flat belly, tossed aside her cup, and was about to rush out to find something to eat when Chen Ruoxi, seeing her leave, called out urgently, "Miss Xuan Yue!"

In the blink of an eye, Xuan Yue had reached the door, moving as quickly as a starving ghost reincarnated. Hearing Chen Ruoxi call her name, she turned to look back.

"Miss Xuan Yue, where is Young Master Bai?"

Xuan Yue replied, puzzled, "Isn't Bai Zhanfeng at home? He said you were pregnant and needed to return home to take care of yourself. He hasn't been at the military camp lately; I thought he was at home accompanying Mrs. Bai and hadn't wanted anyone to disturb you."

Chen Ruoxi expressed disbelief, "You don't know either?"

As she spoke, she moved around the table toward Xuan Yue. Before she could take a few steps, the tent flap was flung open with force, and a dark figure burst in like a whirlwind. Once he entered, the guards who had been stationed at the door, including Yilan, rushed in as well. Chen Ruoxi's face brightened at the sudden appearance of Bai Zhanfeng, but before she could speak, he abruptly grasped Xuan Yue's hand, excitement radiating from him. "I found it!"

As he spoke, he pulled out a crumpled scroll from his breast pocket and handed it to Xuan Yue. "I found him!"

His jovial voice brimmed with unmistakable joy, though Bai Zhanfeng appeared somewhat disheveled in his black attire, weathered by the elements. Over the course of a month, he had lost considerable weight; his chin was adorned with stubble, yet his dark eyes sparkled like stars, fixated on Xuan Yue.

Xuan Yue tilted her head back to look at Bai Zhanfeng, his unkempt beard giving him a wild appearance. Had he not been dressed as he was, she could hardly believe this man before her was Bai Zhanfeng.

Gazing at the scroll in her hands, she suddenly understood, gripping Bai Zhanfeng's hand in excitement. "Where is it?"

"In a place called Xiluo Village in Liancheng, Chu State."

Xuan Yue pulled Bai Zhanfeng toward the table, swiftly retrieving a bamboo brush and scribbling notes: "You should send someone to take me there."

Turning around, she accidentally splattered ink across Bai Zhanfeng's face, the ink splattering as she brushed past him. He wiped at it, and his face was instantly smeared; his skin, already dark, appeared even more disheveled in that moment. Xuan Yue couldn't help but chuckle, placing the brush down. "Bai Zhanfeng."

Xuan Yue glanced around, noticing a lack of mirrors, and pursed her lips. "You really ought to see what a state you're in."

As she spoke, she stood tall and spotted Chen Ruoxi, who was staring blankly at Bai Zhanfeng. Her radiant face, captivating eyes, bore the weight of concealed sorrow and pain. Sighing, Xuan Yue patted Bai Zhanfeng on the shoulder. "You've worked hard. I need to leave for a while; I'm entrusting the matters here to you for now."

Before Xuan Yue could reach the door, Bai Zhanfeng had already caught up, grasping her hand. "I'll accompany you."

Xuan Yue turned to the side and gestured towards Chen Ruoxi, who was standing behind Bai Zhanfeng. "Bai Zhanfeng, your wife has only recently become pregnant; it would be best for her to rest at home."

Following the direction of Xuan Yue's finger, Bai Zhanfeng noticed Chen Ruoxi standing by the table and furrowed his brows, clearly displeased. Although he had previously discussed this matter with Xuan Yue, hearing it reiterated by Chen Ruoxi made him uneasy, raising questions about her intentions.

Chen Ruoxi's gaze shifted between Xuan Yue and Bai Zhanfeng, her hands hanging limply by her sides, a visage of sorrow etched upon her face.

Having been present for some time, Bai Zhanfeng's eyes never lingered on her, shattering the resolve she had mustered, like a glass statue crashing to the ground, shattered into countless irreparable fragments.

"Make time to accompany her more often."

As Xuan Yue spoke, she released Bai Zhanfeng's hand. With her departure, Yi Lan and the others hurried to follow her, leaving Bai Zhanfeng and Chen Ruoxi alone in the tent.

Bai Zhanfeng turned away from Xuan Yue's retreating figure and faced Chen Ruoxi, who was visibly struggling to find her words. "What brings you to see Xuan Yue?" he finally asked after a long moment of hesitation.

Chen Ruoxi bit her lip, her eyes fixed on Bai Zhanfeng, yet she remained silent.

Whenever Xuan Yue was around, Bai Zhanfeng appeared oblivious to Chen Ruoxi's existence; no matter her efforts or the extent of her devotion, it all felt futile.

"Yue Ying, deliver this to Lanyin Temple and personally hand it to the Empress Dowager."

"Qing Ting, gather Yue Ying, Lü Zhu, Yi Lan, and Nuo Lan, along with a few skilled individuals, and set out for Liancheng immediately."

Liancheng, situated in the southern part of the Chu kingdom, boasted a temperate climate and picturesque scenery. However, its remote location rendered it insignificant amid the chaos of these turbulent times, far less notable than the military stronghold of Ye City. Few among the six kingdoms were aware of its existence, let alone its struggles, while even the local populace scarcely knew of a small place like Xiluo Village.

Having departed from Ye City, Xuan Yue and her party traveled for three consecutive days, traversing three major mountains before finally reaching their destination by noon on the third day.

The Chu kingdom, adjacent to the ocean, enjoyed a perpetually mild climate. Although winter had yet to fully relinquish its grasp, the trees in this area flourished lushly. The cool breeze brushing against their faces carried a hint of moisture, creating a refreshing and comfortable atmosphere.

The ongoing war between Xuanyuan and Bai Chu had little impact on this secluded town.

During the transition from winter to spring, warm sunlight bathed the faces of passersby, lending an air of tranquility and ease to the surroundings.

After days of arduous travel, Xuan Yue and her companions appeared rather disheveled. It was lunchtime, and they settled into a nearby inn.

This place rarely welcomed outsiders; despite the lunchtime hour, the inn remained largely deserted, lending it an air of desolation. Due to the lack of guests, the food was promptly served—steaming and rather bland compared to their usual fare. The simplicity of the meal mirrored the modest lifestyle here, which did not quite suit their refined tastes. However, after days of hunger, the group devoured the food eagerly, contrasting sharply with the fastidiousness of pampered ladies who often picked and chose their meals.

"How much longer until we reach Xiluo Village?"

Xuan Yue set down her chopsticks, gulped down a generous mouthful of wine, and sighed contentedly. The rich liquor ignited a warm fire in her stomach, and glancing across at the Chu soldier seated opposite her, she playfully stuck out her tongue and asked.

The soldier, known as Xiao Qi, had an excellent memory. He had accompanied Bai Zhanfeng to this location previously and had been instructed by Bai Zhanfeng to guide Xuan Yue and her companions this time as well.

Xiao Qi scratched his head sheepishly. "The people of Liancheng hold that person in high regard. The last time, when the young master showed them the portrait, they claimed not to have seen him. However, upon noticing their strange expressions, the young master revealed his identity, assuring them of his benign intentions, after which they led us to Xiluo Village. The mountain path is perilous, with many forks; one must be accompanied to navigate through it. It will take a whole day to traverse this way."

"Do you remember the person who guided you last time?"

The soldier nodded. "The young master asked me to remember where those individuals reside, though it's a bit far from this inn."

Xuan Yue pondered for a moment before nodding. "Let's not rush; you go find them. We will settle in at the inn and set off first thing tomorrow morning."

The mountain path was dangerous, and it was still April; the early morning chill would be quite biting.

"Nuo Lan, prepare provisions. We'll stay here tonight."

At the break of dawn the following day, just as the light began to filter in, Xuan Yue and her group rose. The streets were desolate, devoid of any passerby. The early morning breeze, though gentle, carried an unsettling chill that sent shivers down their spines.

Their guides, three middle-aged men—Hu Wei, Zhou Dahu, and Li Xiaosan—were not particularly tall, their frames lean and wiry like monkeys. Having grown accustomed to this weather, they seemed unfazed by the early hour.

The first rays of morning sun cleaved through the clouds like an axe, revealing the towering mountains that loomed in the distance. The three guides spat into their palms, rubbed their hands together, and stretched their limbs to warm up. Turning to survey the large contingent of female soldiers behind Xuan Yue, they wore expressions of disdain, their words laced with condescension. "Do you think you can climb that?"

Yi Lan, Lü Zhu, and the others exchanged sidelong glances at Hu Wei. It was merely a few dozen meters of elevation, with paths worn by previous travelers; given their skills, it posed no significant challenge.

However, the large number of participants, especially those like Nuo Lan who were typically responsible for procurement and had a team under them, would likely lag behind, thus wasting precious time for the princess.

"Xuan Yue swiftly issued her command: 'Nuo Lan, you and your team should catch up from the back. Sister Ping Ting, please accompany them.'

'Princess.'

Bai Ping Ting spoke with a tone of concern.

Xuan Yue cast a fleeting glance at her, then moved to the base of the mountain, tilting her head as if observing something. She clapped her hands, a smile gracing her lips, and took a few steps back. With a graceful leap, her pure white figure ascended to the first foothold. Her speed was astonishing, her white silhouette flitting through the air like a nimble weasel, leaving the onlookers momentarily unable to follow her pace. As she spun in midair, sunlight filtered into her eyes, and her petite form appeared to meld seamlessly with the clouds above. A collective breath was held, fearing she might misstep and plummet, but such worries proved unfounded. Before anyone could register their concern, Xuan Yue had securely landed atop the peak, leaned over, and beckoned to the others with a playful grin: 'Hurry up!'

Hu Wei and the others shook their heads in disbelief, their earlier disdain transformed into admiration. With palms open, they spat a few times, rubbed their hands together, and began their ascent.

Accustomed to climbing, they were well-acquainted with the terrain, and although they could not match Xuan Yue's speed, their movements were still remarkably agile.

Logically, as altitude increases, temperature decreases; however, Xuan Yue distinctly felt that the mountaintop was considerably warmer than below. The breeze carried a gentle warmth, making it quite pleasant.

After half a day's trek, it was already noon when the group of over fifty sought out a shaded spot to rest and refresh themselves.

'How much longer until we arrive?'

'Ahead lies the Narrow Passage, and beyond it is the Wind Chasing Valley. We'll reach Cangqing Mountain after crossing over,' said Zhou Dahu.

As soon as he finished, Li Xiaosan chimed in: 'At this pace, we should arrive in about three hours.'

Xuan Yue nodded, taking a sip of water. When Ya'er offered her a bun, she smiled and gently pushed it away. Although she was accustomed to hardship, she did not care for coarse, unappetizing food; she rarely consumed things she found distasteful, but when it came to dishes she enjoyed, she would eat until she could no longer bear it.

'Is everyone full?'

Xuan Yue rose to inquire. 'Let's rest for another fifteen minutes before we set off.'

The Wind Chasing Valley was connected to the Narrow Passage, characterized by its treacherous terrain. Particularly the Narrow Passage, with steep slopes and sheer cliffs on either side, barely wide enough for a single person to pass through, hence its name.

This area rarely saw sunlight, and the rocks on either side were stark and damp, creating a chilling atmosphere. Even in April, a thin layer of ice lingered on the ground and the rock faces.

Li Xiaosan pulled out a coat from his pack and wrapped it around himself. Green Pearl and the others shivered, tightening their own garments. Xuan Yue looked up, her bright eyes sharp as blades; should anyone lie in ambush on the cliffs, casting down boulders, even the mightiest would find it impossible to escape.

The exit of the Narrow Passage led into the Wind Chasing Valley, surrounded by dozens of divergent paths, each one a perilous dead end, unlike the mountains they had traversed earlier; these paths descended into unfathomable abysses.

'That direction is a branch of the Wind Chasing Valley called the No Return Valley. There's a large cave inside; if it rains, we can take shelter there,' Li Xiaosan pointed to the left.

Xuan Yue nodded, somewhat surprised that the legendary immortal man of the past resided in such a place.

Beyond the Wind Chasing Valley and over a hill, they would arrive at Cangqing Mountain.

Before them lay a vast expanse of verdant woods, dense thickets with a narrow path winding through. As evening approached, the twilight cast a warm glow, bathing the serene trail in a soft golden hue, with the delicate crunch of gravel beneath their feet.

'We're almost there,' Li Xiaosan said, his voice trembling with excitement.

Beyond the woods was a sprawling bamboo grove, its lushness typical of scorching summer days, yet juxtaposed with the frosty plum blossoms blooming in winter, it appeared rather incongruous. After a moment's glance, the green bamboo and crimson plum blossoms struck a harmonious balance.

Separated from the bamboo by an open expanse, Li Xiaosan and Zhou Xiaohu casually discarded their coats and sat down, unwrapping their packages. Inside were neatly arranged writing supplies. He smoothed out a crumpled sheet of white paper, reorganizing his belongings before placing them beside a large stone at the edge of the bamboo grove.

In the distance, the sky was stained crimson, casting a blood-red hue over the entire landscape, as if the earth had been soaked in blood.

Xuan Yue stood tall, surveying her surroundings; in this desolate wilderness, aside from the lifeless flora quietly thriving, and her companions, there was no one else in sight.

'Where are the people?'

Xuan Yue inquired, glancing at Li Xiaosan and Zhou Xiaohu, who were sitting on the ground.

Li Xiaosan took a sip of water and waved his hand dismissively. 'We don't know either. We deliver supplies here every month, and after we're done, we leave immediately. There's only this location in Liancheng. The lotus flowers bloom year-round, but something must have happened, as we can no longer enter. At first, some tried to force their way in, but after a few died, no one dared to attempt it again.'

Zhou Dahu nodded in agreement. 'Anyone from Liancheng who falls seriously ill is brought to this place, and they all recover. Every year on the sixth day of the sixth lunar month, during the Lotus Festival, they distribute food and money to the impoverished and beggars of Liancheng. If it weren't for them, my mother and I would have starved long ago.'

Xuan Yue understood now; no wonder Gong Shaohua had searched for so many years without a trace. Had it not been for Bai Zhanfeng's intervention, these people might not have led them to this place.

'Has your Young Master Bai seen the person in the painting?'

Xuan Yue turned to Xiao Qi, who stood behind her.

Gong Shaohua must have known that Xuelan was in Liancheng and would stop at nothing to find her. These three delivered supplies regularly, and there were surely others who ventured out periodically; Gong Shaohua could not possibly be unaware, and the bamboo grove must conceal its secrets.

Xiao Qi scratched his head habitually, a bit embarrassed as he replied, 'After the Young Master arrived, he remained here until the fifth day. Someone from the bamboo grove came out to collect supplies, and my master stealthily followed him inside. He was missing for nearly ten days and emerged wearing different clothes, looking rather frail.'

Bai Zhanfeng was injured? Xuan Yue couldn't help but recall how Bai Zhanfeng had appeared when she saw him in the military camp. Compared to his usual spirited demeanor, he did indeed seem somewhat weakened. It was no wonder she had easily slipped from his grasp that day; no doubt he was feeling very downcast. Reflecting on this, Xuan Yue couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt. Although he hadn't been able to hold onto her when it mattered, he had truly done much for her, sacrificing a great deal.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the sky gradually darkened.

The moon rose brightly, casting a silvery light, while the stars twinkled across the sky.

The night breeze caressed her skin, carrying a hint of chill. Green Pearl and the others had already set up the tents for the night. The cool, damp air was infused with a rich aroma of cooking, and as they prepared to call Xuan Yue, she was already approaching them, her flat belly guiding her towards the source of the delightful scent. She stepped up to the cooking pot, her eyes narrowing in delight, a radiant smile blooming on her face as she patted the chef, Ya Er, on the shoulder. "I'm utterly exhausted; I'm going to take a nap in the tent. Just make sure to save me some food!"

Ya Er nodded with a smile. Xuan Yue affectionately ruffled her hair, brushed past her, and returned to the tent that Green Pearl had set up for her. Lying down, she furrowed her brow. Her skills were on par with Bai Zhanfeng's, and if he were gravely injured, then forcing her way in would hardly bode well for her.

Shaking her head, she cleared her chaotic thoughts.

"Since I've come, I might as well settle in."

Having survived the perilous Death Valley, what else could possibly frighten her?

Xuan Yue chuckled, turning over, and by the time Ya Er brought her the fragrant meat and bone stew, she had already drifted off to sleep.

The following evening, Bai Pingting led the remaining group to Xilu Village. Hu Wei, Li Xiaosan, and Zhou Dahu stayed for another night, departing early on the third day. Xuan Yue and her companions set up camp among the trees and bamboo groves. Another five days passed without any sign of someone emerging from within.

"Princess, how long are we to wait?"

That night, as they huddled around the crackling bonfire, watching the bamboo grove separated by massive stones, the impatient Green Pearl voiced her concern.

They had already waited here for eight days without seeing anyone come out. The three had mentioned that they would just drop off supplies and leave, and they had never seen anyone from inside. Were they truly expected to wait an entire month? Would waiting a month even guarantee a meeting?

Xuan Yue held a stick in her hand, poking at the burning fire, which crackled and popped.

"Let's have a little chat," she suggested, tossing the slender stick into the flames and clapping her hands. "Since arriving in Bai Chu, we haven't had a proper moon talk yet. What do you all wish to discuss?"

Bai Pingting looked at Xuan Yue, silent for a moment. Though she didn't know who the person in the painting was, the princess's urgency in gathering them must signify its importance. What did it have to do with the Empress Dowager, and what was written on that note?

"Princess, the note you gave me should be reaching Lanyin Temple soon," Xuan Yue replied, her smile unwavering as she rested her chin on her hand, suddenly clapping her hands with excitement. "Now, let's talk about your wishes."

Then, recalling something, she pointed at them and continued, "But don't say anything like wanting to follow me forever. Besides me, what else do you wish to do? I want to hear that."

Xuan Yue pointed at Bai Pingting. "Sister Pingting, you go first."

"Princess,"

Ya Er exclaimed cheerfully, raising her hand. "I want to speak first! I want to speak first!"

Xuan Yue laughed in response. "Alright, Ya Er, you first. What do you wish for?"

Ya Er stood up, wrapping her arms around Green Pearl and Ru Yue, pulling them close. "I hope we can always be together, training by day and chatting with someone by my side at night. And of course, I want plenty of delicious food so we don't go hungry!"

"Sounds good."

Xuan Yue gazed at Ya Er, her innocent smile and tender voice resonating with sincerity.

She understood that this was Ya Er's true desire; she knew that feeling well. Having lost loved ones, one would cherish their current relationships all the more. Having experienced the pangs of near starvation, the yearning for a full stomach was palpable.

"Ya Er's wish will surely come true. We will always be together, and if there's something delicious, I will save it for you," Ru Yue gently patted Ya Er's back with a tender expression.

As Xuan Yue listened to her emphasis on "always," she couldn't help but feel a tinge of sadness.

Once, when she decided to marry Lan Yixuan, she too believed it would last forever.

"Shall I share my wishes?"

Green Pearl cradled her chin in her hands, gazing up at the vast sky with yearning. "First, I hope for peace throughout the realm. Only then can I roam the martial world like the princess, standing against injustice, punishing the wicked, and living as a dashing heroine."

Xuan Yue looked at Green Pearl and chuckled. It reminded her of the words she had spoken to Lan Yixuan back in Fan City about becoming a legendary heroine. Yet, she found herself bound by so many constraints. But for Green Pearl, perhaps it would be possible.

"Princess, why are you laughing? I'm being serious," Green Pearl retorted, her expression serious and earnest. "Many of our other sisters think the same way."

Xuan Yue pressed her lips together. "I'm not laughing at you. After this battle, regardless of the outcome, your wishes will come true."

"Princess."

Everyone shouted in unison, looking at Xuan Yue: "We will surely win."

Yue Ying added, "We hope that the princess will emerge victorious, no matter the cost. Over the years, we have endured hardship, initially out of gratitude to the princess. However, it is not only the princess who has given us everything. Having faced suffering ourselves, we understand that pain; we do not wish for others to experience what we have. As Green Dress Sister said, not everyone is as fortunate as we are. I hope that one day the princess can stand at the pinnacle, revered and cherished by all her people, so that there will be no more wars and everyone can lead a peaceful and happy life."

Xuan Yue raised an eyebrow, and in the flickering firelight, her bright, radiant smile showed no trace of sadness: "Of course, that day will come."

"What about Yi Lan? What do you want? You're not really going to do as Green Zhu said, find a good man to marry and spend your life raising children, are you?"

Xuan Yue teased, and the others laughed lightly, the atmosphere suddenly lightening.

"What's wrong with that?"

Yi Lan sat up straight, speaking without a second thought.

Xuan Yue was slightly surprised, looking at Yi Lan with a playful smile: "It's hard to imagine our gentle and virtuous Yi Lan in a domestic scene."

The others laughed again; among them, Yi Lan was known for her fiery temper, often acting before she spoke, making the idea of her as a homemaker quite unbelievable.

"What's so funny?"

Yi Lan, annoyed, waved her hand as if about to stand up and retaliate.

"Yi Lan, if your child cries in the future, will you discipline her just as fiercely?"

Yi Lan shot a fierce glare at the others and fell silent.

"Even though I feel happy when you're all around me, I still feel empty when I'm alone. You can't stay with me forever. Sometimes, when I think of that, I feel lost and without a sense of belonging. My mother was a maid, and I was born from my father's drunkenness. When I was very young, she told me that as a woman, marrying well is more important than anything else. Having seen too much, I long for a man who can love and cherish me, just as a husband would a princess, willing to die for me. If I ever find such a man, I would gladly lay down my sword and devote my life to being a wife and mother."

The group did not tease Yi Lan as they usually did. As she mentioned, even surrounded by sisters, one can often feel a sense of emptiness, like floating in mid-air without a sense of belonging. Is it the longing for a man? Which woman does not desire a lifelong partner?

Yi Lan smiled, feeling a bit shy under their gazes: "What about you, Princess? You wish for the Crown Prince to always be healthy, to become the mother of the world, and to enjoy a prosperous life with the Prince."

Yi Lan spoke with confidence, for all their efforts were aimed at fulfilling Xuan Yue's wishes.

Xuan Yue pointed at Yi Lan and laughed heartily without answering, instead turning to Bai Ping Ting, who sat beside her: "Sister Ping Ting, what about you? What do you wish for most?"

"To protect the princess on behalf of the Crown Prince."

Xuan Yue pouted in displeasure and shook her head, leaning closer to Bai Ping Ting and winking: "Once this war is over, Sister Ping Ting will return to Feng Country, and then live happily ever after with your brother."

Bai Ping Ting looked down at Xuan Yue, not denying her words: "Are you hiding something from me, princess?"

Xuan Yue straightened up as if she hadn't heard Bai Ping Ting's question, standing up to brush off the dust from her clothes, gazing towards the bamboo forest: "Let's wait a couple more days; if no one comes out, we'll venture in ourselves."

As night deepened and the air turned icy, at the banks of the Bi Luo River, outside Chen Ruo Xi's tent, a dark figure circled the entrance a few times. Sitting by the bed, Chen Ruo Xi suddenly stood and walked to the door. When the tent flap was lifted, a man dressed as a soldier stepped inside, yet his demeanor and presence were not that of an ordinary soldier. Upon removing his hat, he revealed a faint smile—elegant and refined, yet with a hint of cunning. The disheveled figure was none other than Ji Yun Li, the strategist of Xuanyuan Hao.

"Who are you? Where is Xuanyuan Shao?"

Upon seeing it wasn't Xuanyuan Hao, Chen Ruo Xi's brow furrowed, her words tinged with sharpness.

"Ji Yun Li, the strategist of the Young Master." Ji Yun Li maintained his politeness, showing no irritation at Chen Ruo Xi's displeasure.

"I want to see Xuanyuan Hao." Chen Ruo Xi insisted; this matter was of utmost importance, and she needed to personally inform Xuanyuan Hao to secure his promise.

Ji Yun Li glanced at the frowning Chen Ruo Xi, appearing unhurried. He walked to the table to pour himself a cup of tea. "Madam Bai, are you joking? This is the enemy camp. As a subordinate, how can I allow the Young Master to take such risks? The Bi Luo River battle has already cost our Xuanyuan forces dearly; if anything happens to the Young Master, how can Xuanyuan rise again?"

Chen Ruo Xi approached the table and sat beside Ji Yun Li. "I won't say anything until I see Xuanyuan Shao."

Ji Yun Li set down his tea cup, remaining calm. Since Chen Ruo Xi seemed willing to cooperate, he was not worried about her changing her mind at this moment.

"Madam Bai, do you really want to see Young Master Bai's heart forever devoted to another woman? If one day the Lan Kingdom unifies the world, and Bai Zhan Feng serves as a minister, he will inevitably meet Xuan Yue frequently. Do you want the young master to endure the same pain of neglect as you?"

Before coming, Ji Yun Li had thoroughly investigated this woman, finding that she had never had any contact with the Feng Wang. Therefore, the sole reason lay with Bai Zhan Feng. According to the Bai household, she harbored deep feelings for him, yet since their wedding, Bai Zhan Feng rarely visited her. The last time Feng Wang left the Bai household, Bai Zhan Feng had even quarreled with her. All of this pointed to one conclusion: she loved Bai Zhan Feng, and everything she did was aimed at winning his affection. Since he had come this far, it would be absurd for him to leave empty-handed. Even if she did not wish to speak now, he would compel her to reveal what he needed to know.

"Moreover, I'm taking quite a risk here. If I'm caught outside, do you think I would tell Young Master Bai anything?"

Chen Ruo Xi gasped, cold sweat breaking out on her palms. The Young Master already disliked her, and if he learned about this matter, she would surely be expelled from the Bai household despite carrying the Bai bloodline. She didn't want that; she didn't want to leave the Young Master, nor her child.

In that moment, Chen Ruo Xi felt overwhelmed. Indeed, given how things had reached this point, what did she have to lose? As long as Xuan Xuan Yue was gone, as long as that woman was out of the picture, the Young Master would see her goodness, and she could obtain what she desired.

"On what basis should I trust you?"

Chen Ruoxi took a deep breath, striving to calm herself. "I've heard that Prince Xuanyuan has an interest in King Feng. If he hesitates and King Feng finds out, won't I be shooting myself in the foot?"

Ji Yunli bit his lip. "Madam Bai, our Xuanyuan has already suffered immense losses with the death of tens of thousands of soldiers. Given such a deep-seated enmity, do you truly believe that our prince would be so shortsighted? Moreover, the prince aspires for the world; as long as King Feng can be dealt with, what is there to fear regarding our grand ambitions? Your concerns are merely the worries of a foolish mind."

Even if the prince were inclined to show mercy towards King Feng, he would still need to remove this stumbling block. Lan Wang harbored deep feelings for King Feng, and should she fall into their hands or come to harm, it would surely throw him into disarray. That would present the perfect opportunity for Xuanyuan to make a comeback.

"Madam Bai, do you have any other options? For what you desire, you must cooperate with me now."

Ji Yunli spoke with confidence. Chen Ruoxi had undoubtedly made a significant decision to seek out Xuanyuan; her yearning for this matter was palpable. In such a moment, with just a bit of temptation, what wouldn't she divulge? This time, he was determined to eliminate Feng Xianyue. The mere thought of that woman made Ji Yunli grit his teeth in anger, mixed with unspoken regret. If only this clever yet malicious woman were their Xuanyuan's princess, perhaps Xuanyuan would already be the ruler of the realm, on par with both the prince and Lan Wang. Yet, she had chosen to marry Lan Wang.

Chen Ruoxi's hands clutched the handkerchief tightly. Yes, for what she wished to obtain, she could not allow Xianyue to live. If that day truly came when Lan Kingdom triumphed, and the prince met with her daily, he would never be able to forget his old feelings. But if she were to die, everything would change. Even if Lan Kingdom gained the world, the prince wouldn't have to see her often.

"You leave a written guarantee, assuring me that should Xuanyuan gain control of the realm one day, you will treat the Bai family kindly."

Ji Yunli smiled, resembling a fox that had honed its cunning over a millennium. He produced a piece of paper from his sleeve and handed it to Chen Ruoxi. "This bears the prince's seal. If Xuanyuan comes to power, Madam Bai shall be acknowledged as a great benefactor, and we shall certainly reward the Bai family. Furthermore, we will never let Bai Zhanfeng know of this matter."

Chen Ruoxi opened the note, gazing at the seal, then carefully tucked it away. "King Feng has secretly traveled to Xilu Village in Liancheng. This is his route."

At this moment, Chen Ruoxi resolved to eliminate Xianyue, fully prepared for whatever it might entail.

Ji Yunli took the note from Chen Ruoxi's hand, regarding her with a hint of disdain. Such a woman, disregarding the greater scheme for the sake of love and willing to sacrifice everything—no wonder Bai Zhanfeng looked down on her. In terms of grace, composure, and cunning, she didn't even measure up to a fraction of King Feng. It was no surprise that Bai Zhanfeng was indifferent; a woman like her could never be replaced, living on in the hearts of men even in death. Yet, he wouldn't disclose this to the foolish woman. In time, she would come to realize everything. A man as proud as Bai Zhanfeng, how could he ever yield to Xuanyuan, other than for the woman he cherished?

"This time, she has brought only a little over two hundred people with her. If Prince Xuanyuan lets her escape now, then Xuanyuan will have no choice but to bow to Lan Kingdom in the end."

Chen Ruoxi scoffed lightly; she was indifferent to being regarded as a benefactor. Her only desire was to protect the prince's interests and the Bai family's heritage, which had been passed down for hundreds of years.

"Liancheng is a small town in the south. In such a short time, how can we cross the Biluo River and reach Liancheng?" There was only one road; they must cross the Biluo River.

"This is my grandfather's token; it should be useful to you. As for the rest, that is up to you. If Prince Xuanyuan lacks the ability to handle this, then he is unworthy of claiming the throne."

Ji Yunli smiled as he took the item from Chen Ruoxi's hands and bowed slightly. "Then I thank Madam Bai for her assistance."

He tucked the item into his robe, donned his hat, and stepped outside, just as he encountered Bai Zhanfeng at the entrance of the tent.

"Prince."

Chen Ruoxi's heart lurched, fear making her retreat several steps. When did he arrive? Had he overheard her conversation with Ji Yunli? How much did he hear? She hoped Ji Yunli wouldn't be discovered.

Chen Ruoxi forced herself to step outside, lifting the tent flap while striving to suppress her inner turmoil. If all this came to light, everything would be ruined—not only for her but for the entire Chen family.

"Prince, what brings you here?"

She spoke softly, her voice trembling slightly.

Bai Zhanfeng regarded Chen Ruoxi, his face pale in the orange glow of the lanterns. His once cold and proud gaze now bore traces of both familiarity and anxiety. He glanced at the soldier kneeling on the ground before stepping inside. Chen Ruoxi looked at Ji Yunli on the ground, breathed a sigh of relief, lowered the curtain, and followed him in.

"That was just my grandfather's personal guard. He's been feeling unwell lately and wanted me to return to keep him company."

In an instant, Chen Ruoxi quickly fabricated a plausible explanation.

"Prince, I don't want to go back; I wish to stay here with you. I initially planned to keep this matter from him, fearing you would misunderstand."

Chen Ruoxi fixed her gaze on Bai Zhanfeng, her starry eyes shimmering with a pitiful appeal.

"Since Chancellor Chen is unwell and wishes for you to accompany him, you should go back and care for him."

Bai Zhanfeng's gaze lacked its previous frostiness. Although Chen Ruoxi carried his child now, both understood the circumstances of its conception. He had made her a promise, and he had kept it; as for feelings, he possessed but one heart—a heart that had already perished. Even if it still beat, it no longer belonged to Chen Ruoxi.

Initially, he felt deep guilt towards Chen Ruoxi, but now her actions steadily eroded his dwindling patience. She was fully aware of his feelings for Xianyue, yet she persisted in seeking her out repeatedly, an act he found utterly intolerable. Bai Zhanfeng desired a woman of decorum, one whose feelings he could not control, and he certainly did not want anyone intruding upon his own.

"Furthermore, now that you are with child, the dampness by the river is detrimental to your health."

Hearing him mention the child, Chen Ruoxi's face brightened slightly as she moved closer to him. "Prince, I truly recognize my errors this time. I promise there won't be a next time. You haven't returned to Bai Manor in so long, and I was only worried, which is why I sought out Miss Xianyue. Just this once, for the sake of the child, please don't hold it against me."

She had been here for several days now; even in the military camp, it was challenging to see him. Even when she did, he would not speak to her. She knew he was still upset over the last incident—over her seeking out Feng Xianyue and revealing her pregnancy. Did she deserve blame for that? She did not. Love was inherently selfish, and her actions were all for the protection of her family. This would certainly be the last time, as Xilu Village was destined to be Xianyue's grave.

"What about you, Prince? Will you return with me?" Chen Ruoxi wrapped her arms around Bai Zhanfeng and looked up at him with eager anticipation. "Grandfather would also love to see you."

Bai Zhanfeng pried her arms from around him, his expression stiff, lacking any softness. "With Xianyue absent, I must remain here to guard the area. Tomorrow, I will have Bai Qi escort you back. It's late; you should rest early. I have military matters to attend to."

Having spoken, Bai Zhanfeng cast a cold glance at Chen Ruoxi and turned to leave.

"Prince." Chen Ruoxi chased after Bai Zhanfeng's retreating figure, but he didn't look back. She bit her lip, her usually gentle eyes gleaming with a mix of delight and malice.

Feng Xianyue, you can't blame me. Blame yourself instead for clinging to the prince's heart without letting go. Xilu Village will be your final resting place.
