She could easily say no to his mother's request; Bel wasn't that nice, and his mother had no right to make such a request of her. She could have said no, but she didn't, even though she had asked him to join her.

"You canceled our dinner for a stranger?" he repeated. Davien was pretty calm in most situations—it was the one thing he was confident about. Growing up with Alexander had ensured that. But Bel made him forget it sometimes, and right now was one of those times.

"No, that wasn't what happened," she said.

"Pray tell," he said, his gaze never leaving her. She could clearly see the whites under his eyes.
