Fighting A Lone Battle

"A lot my dear, besides, there's nothing I'm doing that you can't do yourself, so stop flattering me," Mrs Bert smiled as she led Grace into the mansion.

They were only a few feet from the living room when Grace instinctively slowed her pace as a sense of unease crept over her.

Mrs Bert noticed Grace's hesitation. "What is it, dear?" she asked kindly.

"I'm not sure I should go in right now," Grace murmured, biting her lip. The last thing she wanted was to walk into the middle of something, especially if it was their personal family matter.

Grace was about to turn back, but it was already too late as a sharp female voice cut through the air.

"And I presume you must be the renowned nanny," came the sarcastic drawl from inside the room.

Grace froze. Whoever was speaking had clearly noticed her presence, so with a sigh, Grace stepped forward into the doorway, out of courtesy more than anything.
