In Murphy's understanding, all the characters in "Game of Thrones," like those in the Hollywood fame and fortune scene, including himself, cannot be simply divided by notions of good and evil. Human nature is complex, and so is society.
For two whole weeks, Murphy and George Martin led the entire crew, finishing the ten episodes of the first season, and then they gave everyone, including themselves, a break to prepare for the even busier work ahead.
During these two weeks, "Gone Girl" had almost completely cooled down, earning only over $6 million, bringing the North American box office total to nearly $220 million.
As the film continued to appear in more overseas markets, its international box office was still growing steadily. Thanks to the overseas performance, the global box office smoothly broke through $450 million, making it the fourth highest-grossing film globally so far this year.
"Murphy's another film has surpassed $400 million!"
Inside the UCLA campus, Gal Gadot, carrying a backpack, walked out of her dorm building. A girl caught up with her from behind and said while walking, "He's done so well, Gal! Your friend is definitely going to be a superstar director in Hollywood."
Gal turned to her with a smile, "Thank you."
The girl, keeping up with her, added, "You have a good eye."
She was indeed impressed by Gal Gadot, for having found such a person as a boyfriend. Many in the college envied and were jealous of this Israeli girl.
"Mina..." Gal slowed her pace, "I'm with Murphy not because he is a Hollywood director. He is just Murphy Stanton."
If choosing a boyfriend based on wealth were her criterion, she could find many with better conditions than Murphy in Israel.
But others didn't know this. The girl named Mina, lagging a step behind Gal, rolled her eyes slightly, "Yeah, I know."
She scoffed. If it wasn't for Murphy Stanton, could Gal Gadot have become a celebrity at the college? Could she have such good living conditions? She didn't believe it for a second.
Even without looking back, Gal could guess what people behind her thought, but she didn't care. After all, they were just classmates in the film society, not friends. As long as she understood why she fell for Murphy, that was enough.
If she kept worrying about others' opinions, life would only be filled with unnecessary annoyances.
Rather than fret over these things, it was better to spend more time and energy on her studies.
"Do they need me for something?"
Descending the hill where the dorm area was located, Gal asked Mina, who had specifically come to find her.
Because of Murphy, she had chosen the film society when selecting extracurricular clubs. The last trip to San Francisco was also with the society to shoot an amateur documentary. But like her, everyone was quite amateurish; they underestimated the challenges before shooting, ran out of funds and film, and had to return to Los Angeles early, which also led to her witnessing that distasteful scene with Natalie Portman.
"Nothing special."
As they approached the small building where the film society was located, Mina said cheerfully, "The society is preparing for the annual celebration party. John and Moson want to discuss it with you, the vice president."
"Me?" Gal shook her head. "Didn't I say when you pushed me into this position? I will attend the society activities on time, but I won't be responsible for specific affairs."
She knew those guys made her the so-called vice president entirely because of Murphy.
"This is the society's most important event of the year." Mina tried to persuade her from the side. "You are the star and representative of the film society. Of course, you can't be absent."
Since she had joined the film society, even if for the sake of future credits, she couldn't ignore these activities. Gal nodded and walked into the building first.
"Hi, Gal."
"Gal, you're here."
As soon as she entered the room where the film society was, a chorus of greetings rang out, and Gal responded with nods, impeccable in her politeness.
She was about to go to the study room soon. Glancing at her watch, she said to the society's two leaders, "John, Moson, Mina said you were looking for me. What's up?"
A twenty-year-old boy with brown short hair said, "This weekend, the society is holding an annual celebration party. In addition to society members and schoolmates, we also plan to invite some guests."
Gal immediately understood that John had set his sights on Murphy.
John turned to look at another blonde boy, "Moson invited his cousin Elizabeth Holmes. You see..."
He was relatively subtle, while the blonde boy named Moson said, "Can you invite Murphy to join the celebration party? We're a film society, always wanting to ask professionals some
questions but never finding the opportunity."
"Gal..." John also said, "Our society hasn't been around for long. Many students from the literature and art schools plan to make their way to Hollywood in the future... um, could you invite Murphy?"
Mina also chimed in, "Yeah, Gal. I'm from the art school, John and Moson are from the literature school, we all love films very much, but we don't have access to Hollywood success stories. Could you ask Murphy for us?"
Another girl also helped, "We promise not to cause any trouble."
"Gal, please." John, the leader of the film society, said earnestly, "Could you help us out?"
The room was filled with a dozen people who all gathered around, persuading Gal Gadot in various tones. Gal sighed, knowing that if she didn't contact Murphy, she really might offend everyone.
Although she didn't particularly care about this, she still had a long time left at this college and couldn't afford to mess up basic relationships with classmates.
"Everyone, quiet!" Seeing that her words had no effect, Gal had to raise her voice, "Could everyone please calm down!"
As her clear and loud words spread, the room gradually quieted down. John, Moson, Mina, and others all looked at Gal, placing their hopes on this Israeli girl.
These people were still students in the ivory tower, not very cunning, and even if they were, they probably wouldn't match up to Gal. Compared to them, Gal, who had accompanied Murphy to various Hollywood gatherings and seen many people wearing masks, was more experienced.
They were all people who loved films. Although they missed professional colleges like the USC School of Cinematic Arts and NYU Film Institute for various reasons, they wouldn't easily give up on their dreams. Their last trip to San Francisco had also realistically shown them the gap between dreams and reality, and they urgently hoped someone could guide them.
Even if the path ahead was murky, they wanted a relatively correct direction to proceed.
Having been in the film society for more than a day or two, Gal knew most of these classmates were idealists and quite pure film lovers.
She sighed, pulled out her phone, and signaled to everyone, "I'll call Murphy now."
"Great!"
"Wow!"
"Long live Gal!"
"Gal is the best!"
Cheers filled the room, and only when everyone quieted down again did Gal add, "I can only relay your invitation. I can't guarantee whether he'll agree or not."
She didn't want to directly influence Murphy's decision, even though she knew that her call would represent a certain stance.
Gal Gadot stepped out of the room, left the building, and found a quiet spot under a tree. She didn't call Murphy directly but first sent a text message. After receiving a reply that Murphy was free, she dialed his number.
"Hi, dear." Murphy waved at Bill Roscis and Grace before walking to the floor-to-ceiling window. "What's up?"
Gal's voice came through the phone, "Mmm, I joined a club at school."
She hadn't specifically told Murphy which club it was, so she explained, "It's the film society here."
"Oh..." Murphy teased, "So my Gal is also interested in films."
Gal rolled her eyes, "I just want to have more in common with you."
She had made clear efforts in their relationship, which Murphy fully recognized. Lowering his voice, he said, "Thank you, dear."
"My society is holding an anniversary celebration party this weekend," Gal didn't pick up on Murphy's line, "and the leaders want to invite some significant guests."
Murphy realized, "So they found you and want you to invite me."
Gal didn't deny it, simply stating, "Mmm... that's about it."
After saying this, she didn't speak further, not wanting to influence Murphy, waiting for his decision instead.
"Give me a second." Murphy turned to Bill Roscis, "Any plans this weekend?"
"There's an event," Bill glanced at the schedule, then added, "You're not required to attend."
"Then I won't go."
Murphy knew that refusing would make it difficult for his girlfriend among her classmates. He said into the phone, "I'm free this weekend, I can attend."
"Mmm..." Gal's voice came through again, "Then I'll tell them."
"Ah, right, another thing," Murphy added a reminder, "Tell them to discuss any matters privately, not to organize public events."
Students are always passionate, which can sometimes be a headache.
"No problem." Gal was ready to hang up, "See you this weekend."
Murphy also spoke his final words into the phone, "Okay, see you this weekend."
