Chapter 286 : In A Nutshell

It really took a long time for Eric to tell his story to Orion. By the time he was done, Orion had only one thing to say:

"God damn it, that was way too much. Though the highlight has to be you being a complete fucking fool and turning yourself into a vampire." Orion couldn't help but retort after hearing what kind of things Eric had done.

Eric didn't react to this; his silence was a way to agree that Orion wasn't wrong.

The entire story was overwhelming, but to simplify it, Eric was Merlin's successor. Merlin had transferred half of his power to him, as he wasn't completely capable of handling the entire power.

But then death struck, and Eric wasn't able to stop her. Merlin used his half of the power, called Harmony, to push back death, but that power came at a cost.

Even half of that power was enough to kill him. In fact, none of the guardians could use Harmony fully; Merlin was the best among all the previous successors.

The power that should have been with Merlin was lost, or at least that's what Eric believed. But Orion thought that power was the reason why Merlin was able to separate that memory all this time, technically not dying outright as Eric explains.

Eric, who still had half of the power, was lost on what to do because his learning under Merlin wasn't finished yet.

He lied when he said that he was cursed to be a vampire; that wasn't the case at all. In fact, he himself injected the vampire venom into him, trying to become a Twilight Vampire.

Why would he do that? Well, because he wanted to live long enough to find the next successor. Technically, he was dying after that last fight with death.

Half of the Guardian power had already disappeared with Merlin. If he too had died back then, nothing could have been done.

So he turned himself into a vampire. After all, vampires, at least those born with elder blood, are basically immortal. But there was another problem: vampires can't use magic. He still had that hidden part of the special magic with him, but not being able to use magic meant that he couldn't even pass this magic to the next successor.

This was a major issue.

Because every 1,000 years, the rebirth of magic appears. This phenomenon is a force of nature and older than mankind itself.

And this is also the same time when the world is in the most dangerous situation because of death.

If she got her hands on that kind of power, then we're all doomed. Guardians are supposed to stop her. But if Eric can't transfer this magic to the next guardian, then there won't be another guardian.

In fact, there have been multiple guardian candidates in the last 1,000 years, and he was incapable of passing on his magic.

So he had to do experiments, making himself the very first vampire who could use magic. For the last 1,000 years, he had been working hard to develop a way to create a perfect vessel.

Orion remembered that vampires were originally created with this very intention—to be able to live forever.

But it never worked. Only those with elder blood in their veins were able to live forever. Merlin believed that this was not permanent; they too would die eventually, and if not already, they were running out of time and most likely found a way to supplement their diminishing life.

What can Orion say about this? It indeed worked out for him, but ultimately he died. Calling Merlin's student a failure would be wrong on multiple levels, as he was able to do something even the original creator of those damn vampires couldn't.

But ultimately, it didn't matter. By the time he was done with that, even the effect of the diluted vampire blood in him was running out, making him desperate.

He fought tooth and nail to live long enough to complete his research, so he could prepare his own vampiric body to transfer that magic to the next guardian.

And he was even successful. Orion was a victim of the first vampire who could use magic, after all.

But something even more unexpected happened. Though that little thing he did was able to make his vampire body use magic, it also killed him. But more than anything, his body didn't die; it turned into a monster.

Which honestly Orion doubted, seeing that the vampire he caught was clearly not a monster but sentient.

There was a feeling of déjà vu in his heart. Though he wasn't sure why, he felt like this thing was somehow connected to him, even more than Merlin.
