Chapter 19

The elevator doors opened on one of the underground floors of the building.

Dio stepped out into a corridor with white walls and a clean floor; the scent of chemicals in this place strongly resembles a hospital.

He walked down the corridor until he reached the morgue. He opened the door and saw several metal tables against the wall and several small doors where bodies were kept.

Dio has been here before, so he is somewhat used to the environment.

Dio went to the other end of the room, where there's a door. Instead of knocking, he opened it immediately.

It's a small office with a writing desk, a chair, and a computer. A sleeping man sat on the other side of the desk, where a huge pile of papers lay.

Dio approached him and gently touched his shoulder, saying, "Doctor, it's time to wake up."

"Hmm..."

He responds, jerking awake and rubbing his eyes.

"Dio? Is it already morning?"

Johnny asked.

Dr. John "Johnny" Peril specializes in researching paranormal phenomena. He met him a few weeks ago.

He usually works late into the night, so he asked Dio to wake him up when he arrived.

A few moments later, he's fully awake, removed his glasses, and smiled at him.

"You've come for the results of my research on your new ability."

He always asked in a formal way.

"Did you find anything?"

Dio asked instead of answering.

"Yes and no,"

Johnny replied before standing up and walking to a bookshelf on the other side of the room.

While Johnny specializes in paranormal phenomena, he doesn't have much practical experience with them.

He's neither a magician nor a mystical being.

So, everything he learned was obtained from old books and research. He fills in the blanks with science, since that's all he knows.

"As you know, your magic focuses on areas like necromancy and shadow magic—unfortunately, these are the most important directions to gather information on. But fortunately, not only necromancy deals with ghosts and spirits."

He said this as he continued to search through his books. The reason Dio turned to him for help is quite simple, he started seeing ghosts.

It began one night as he was walking home from school. He saw something strange between the two buildings.

A person standing, holding onto their legs, shivers as if freezing to death.

Their clothing was tattered and dirty; they were clearly homeless.

Dio walked up to them to see if he could help, but they were shaking too hard for a summer day in the middle of the day.

They would only say they were cold when he tried to talk to them. He chose to get medical help because he couldn't communicate with them.

But when he turned around, he saw young people staring at him like he was crazy and asking who he was talking to.

That made things clear.

Dio looked all over the internet and finally found out about the homeless person who died from frostbite in the same place last winter.

Dio has been seeing ghosts in different parts of the city ever since.

There weren't that many of them, but they all seemed stuck where they died, like they couldn't move or even talk to him.

He usually didn't ignore things, so he asked Dr. Peril to help him learn some mystical information about ghosts.

"I found it!"

Johnny exclaimed joyfully and approached him with two books in his hands.

"How's your Ancient Greek?"

Johnny asked and offered me the first book.

"Almost nothing, but Julia is teaching me some languages; I can ask her for help."

Dio replied and took the black hardcover book with unfamiliar words on the cover.

"Take this one too; it's more modern and scientific."

Johnny said that and handed him another.

This one was in English, and it should explain what ghosts are from a scientific perspective.

"Thank you, Doctor."

Dio replied and took both books.

"Don't thank me; observing how you use your abilities has also been very helpful to me. Victoria was quite jealous when she heard about it; she wanted the opportunity to study your DNA ever since you arrived here."

Victoria October. A specialist in biological weaponry at A.R.G.U.S. Dio hasn't met her personally, but he has heard a lot about her.

"I have to go, Doctor; I still have homework to do, although I hate doing it."

Dio said and sighed.

"Do as I did back in the day; go straight to senior high school or college; it won't be a problem for you."

Johnny replied and returned to his chair.

The doctor knew that Dio was smarter than his current class, so he always offered to let him skip a few lessons.

There are easy ways to skip high school, but Dio needs to go to normal school right now. There isn't much work to do in his class, so he can finish lessons quickly and train.

"Maybe I'll do that next year; for now, I need to go."

Dio replied.

"Goodbye, boy,"

Johnny said as he left his office.

Dio walked back down the corridor to the elevator and went to the top floor, where the hangar is located.

Steve is a good guy, and to avoid delaying him or making Diana drive him home every time, he gave him permission to use one of his helicopters for transportation.

Dio sat down after saying hello to the pilot and started reading while the chopper took off. The black one was the first one he opened.

Of course, he can't read it, but the hand-drawn pictures inside are very helpful.

One of the bad things about necromancy is that most of the spells are very scary and involve people dressed in black calling on ghosts to hurt other people.

Dio is pretty sure that the book is a story about what ghosts are and how magicians use them to read through its pages.

Dio's transport lands at the back of the house. The helicopter he was in was equipped with stealth technology, so no one noticed its arrival.

Dio thanked the pilot and went into the house through the back door.
