4 The Funeral

“Eva!” a pretty low voice rang out behind me. I turned back and saw Liv dressed in all black. She was my old friend, Jeff's wife, but now, she's a widow!

Liv held my hands, and I felt the coldness in her palms. Her eye sockets were sunken, and the whites of her eyes were bloodshot.

Even if her face was covered with a thick layer of foundation, it could not hide her haggard appearance!

“I'm sorry about Jeff,” I said in a soothing tone. “I’ll always be with you, Liv!”

“Thanks for coming!” Liv's voice was as cold as her palm, and she didn't say anything else. She let go of my hand and continued to greet the other guests. Watching Liv's emaciated figure move slowly through the crowd, I couldn't help feeling a little sad. Losing a lover is a painful thing.

Would Ron have been sad to lose me in my last life?? No, he won't!

I watched as the coffin containing Jeff's body was sunk into the soil, and almost everyone's face showed sadness. Only Liv, her eyes stared at the coffin, silent and expressionless. When everyone left, she was the only one who stayed.

I wanted to stay with Liv, but Ron urged me to hurry home because he had left an important document in his study. It's an application to merge the companies, which is his biggest concern currently.

“Eva, darling!” Ron found me in the kitchen and set his papers on the rectangular table. “I need a whisky on the rocks!”

As my life habit, I did what he asked. Ron tore off his black tie with one hand and threw it aside. With the other, he raised his glass and began to drink.

“I've had a lot on my plate lately, Eva, and I need your help,” Ron told me, “Regarding Jeff's death, he was found murdered and his body dumped at sea! Of course, I kept the news from the public. Apart from his wife, very few people know the cause of Jeff's death!”

I was shocked. Jeff was not only my husband's right-hand man, but also a former Mafia member. Who would kill him?

“Maybe they're not after Jeff!” Rowen looks at me meaningfully. “I'm guessing it has something to do with the business merger next month -- the competition!”

“So what are you going to do?” I asked.

“Keep an eye out for suspicious individuals,” Ron said of his plan. “I need your help!”

“I thought you were going to let me handle the merger of the gas company,” I said.

“I have someone in mind for the case,” Ron said as the cell phone in his pocket rang. So he answered the phone with his back to me.

There was a roaring sound in my head, like a lot of bees vibrating their wings in my ears. The sound was disturbing my thoughts, and Ron's back was getting blurry in my vision.

He was my husband and condemned me to death in my last life. Why am I still talking to him calmly, even accepting his work schedule? Maybe I should just ask him why he cheated on my sister and why he doesn't love me.

But why would he admit that? There is still a week to go before our wedding anniversary. Did I let that damn thing happen again? No, I'm sick of that damn prison. I'm sick of being teased like a dog by the jailers.

I'll ask him myself. I want to see his shocked expression. I want to know how he explained it to me!

“Ron!” I said, gazing at my husband as he ended the call. “I have a question for you! It's very important!”

Ron looked up at the watch on his wrist. “I'm sorry, Eva, but I have something more important to take care of back at the office.

“What's so important?” I asked.

“I told you. I'm in a hurry!” Ron said impatiently as he picked up his phone and turned to leave.

I watched Ron trot out the door, then the sound of a car starting. My mind started again. Where was he going? Why didn't he tell me? Was he meeting Gina in secret?

At the funeral, I saw a woman smiling at Ron but he was pretending not to see her! Was he seeing other women behind my back, or was it a one-night stand?

I looked at everything familiar in the house. I remember when I first decorated the house, I picked out every item with the expectation of happiness.

This was my home! But now, it doesn't belong to me anymore when I die. Will my husband take his new love and take everything that used to belong to me? Gina loves all the luxuries. She's going to remodel my house. She will erase every trace of what was once mine!

God, I'm going crazy! I'm suffocating!

I grabbed my purse and shoved the door open. I drove in the direction Ron had left. Three blocks later, I found Ron's Ferrari.

He was waiting for a red light at a crossroad. I looked up at the sign. It wasn't the way to the office.

Ron really lied to me!

I gripped the steering wheel, and after the red light turned green, the Ferrari made a slow left turn. The car in front of me was stuck like a snail, so I honked my horn frantically and even stuck my head out of the window to curse. I didn't put my head back in the car until the car in front of me moved.

But when I caught up, the Ferrari was gone. I lost him! Angry, I drove down the street until night fell and the rows of lighted streetlights were as bright as the stars at night. These streetlights seemed to be telling the passers-by that it was time to go home!

Finally, I was discouraged. I knew it was a waste of time to look for something so aimless. So I pulled over to the side of the road. Physically and mentally exhausted, I put my head on the steering wheel and cried.

What am I supposed to do? I banged my head on the steering wheel, and just as I looked up, a Ferrari appeared in my line of sight.

The car pulled into a parking garage at a bar with a neon sign that read: screaming and passion!

To avoid being recognized, I put on a pair of sunglasses before I got out of the car. But when I got to the door of the bar, the big security guard stopped me directly. He asked to see my membership card. I was stunned. I didn't expect this to be a membership bar.

One can only imagine how many untold scandals are hidden in this magnificent door. But I couldn't get in! I could only circle outside the door like a stray cat that had been chased away.

“Eva?” A light, cheerful voice said behind me. “Why are you here?”

I turned my head and was shocked!
