Wild Goose Chase

A.N.

I'm sorry, I saw a mistake I needed to edit and I don't have an idea how to edit without pressing update button. Please bear with me. :(

Yeonjun's pov

Three weeks have passed since we thought we got a lead and Taehyun's wounds have almost healed.

Funnily enough we only ended up in a wild goose chase because the girl he almost caught redhanded never showed up at the crimescene again, judging from the videos we reviewed everyday.

I was more than willing to do a stakeout for another day that time but due to the new cases being dumped at us, we became too occupied to focus on the missing boy and the head of the department eventually accepted the defeat.

"Taehyun," I called out my partner who's doing a thorough inspection on a recent death lead by a suspicious car accident at dawn, in the middle of the busiest bridge in the city.

"Mornin'." He replied without looking.

"Morning." I greeted back while watching him scrutinize the fresh corpse of a slender man hanging over an expensive black suv's hood with his left foot stuck in the leather steering wheel. "What do we have here?"

"A back passenger." He simply answered and continued to stick his nose all over it's stinky upper body.

"How did you know?" I'm stunned since the real forensic pathologist hasn't even arrived at the location, yet he already deduced this much as if it's a fact and I'm afraid it actually is, solely because he said it.

"The angle speaks volumes." He frowned at the road near the left side of the car and ran his eyes around the empty surroundings. "Could you tell the others to check the retailers of the tire marks from this point onwards?" Taehyun requested. "Ask them to check the motorists who passed this route from the time of the crime too."

"That's way too many to cover in a day."

"Not necessarily." He pointed out the two tire marks overlapping each other. "Looks like we got two big bikes of different types."

I crossed my arms on my chest as Taehyun began lecturing me for free, "this one for example," he said as he pointed out the one mark swerving to the right, "have very similar characteristics to sports tires but partly sacrifice grip at high lean angles in favor of greater mileage, especially the weight they have to bear so it has greater number and depths of rubber notches."

"Umm… I'm not following." I groaned.

He ignored my mumbling and drew my attention towards another set of tires in a straight line which appears to have stopped midway and eventually left like nothing happened.

"The other one has excellent grip when cornering and in all weather conditions. This is made possible thanks to tires produced with intermediate compounds in the central area and soft on the sides, lesser rubber notches on the surface."

"Can we go straight to the point please?" I sighed in exhaustion.

"It means this mysterious Harley-Davidson owner caused the driver to abruptly halt the car to avoid collision and the one not wearing the seatbelt at the back ended up like that. Meanwhile, this sport tires here arrived later then took our driver somewhere."

I was speechless at how his theory was so random and yet make a lot of sense, judging at how the tracks had faint acceleration scuffs next to the driver's seat.

It took the team the whole day to find our potential suspects since the Harley tracks disappeared as soon as it U-turned to southbound.

Fortunately the sports bike was easier to follow because it left blood traces and by using all available traffic safety cameras, we finally spotted the black sports bike slowing down in a small gas station southbound. It was a taxing job but definitely worth it.

I quickly begged our chief for a helicopter assistance along with two more cops and brought Taehyun just in case we need additional help on analytical thinking.

Twenty minutes have passed when we arrived yet the bike hasn't left the station. I'm starting to worry that the riders have fled using another form of transportation.

"They must be treating the driver's wounds." Taehyun tapped my shoulder to assure we get to keep our jobs, "we'll definitely capture this one this time. I promise you."

"I hope so."

The helicopter briefly hovered atop hill a couple of meters away, letting us to rappel down the back side of the gas station to avoid direct vision.

"You two go to the front," I told Taehyun and a middle-aged cop so that the other one and I can cover the back.

"Be careful. They might be armed." He said as he pull out his billy club while letting the one carrying a gun lead the way.

"I know. Our backup will arrive soon so please don't force it." I returned the genuine concern before we climbed over the low mesh fence.

We were still checking the possible escape routes when I suddenly heard Taehyun shouting out there, along with a few gunshots and a motorcycle leaving the area.

I immediately jumped over a few barrels at the corner to gain access to the narrow passageway, only to bump against a person dressed in white plain shirt and black loose denim pants.

The other party fell on their back from the impact and even suffered worse by catching almost half my weight.

I shook my head to clear my vision and rose up as soon as I noticed it was a long, black-haired girl who looks like she hit the back of her head on the cement ground.

I had to carry her body out of the way before this civilian gets involved in the chase, however, as soon as I leaned forward, she kicked my legs sideways and found myself beneath her, threatening one of the cops holding a gun at the entrance.

To be continued…

Hi to everyone, I just wanna thank you for the 10 collections this book has received in it’s first volume. I’ll try my best to not let you down until the very end so I hope the story I make can satisfy both of us.

Ps: I apologize my writing has been slow I was trying to figure out how to add new volume. It took me so long to figure it out and sorry for the messy unnecessary updates.
