Peculiar

Halstead had caught up to Cadmus.

He knelt down and scooped him into a hug. But he made no effort to embrace back.

"Blair's not gone, is she?" The words fell out of his mouth like whispers lost in the wind.

The adults, so tall and imposing, turned to look at Cadmus. What happened next was obvious – they were all taken to a room for interrogation. Cadmus, as the only witness to the kidnapping, was their last hope.

He hung onto his father like he was his lifeline. And at that point, maybe he actually was.

"So," the policeman began in a matter-of-fact tone, but Cadmus could sense the underlying unease in it. "Will you please tell us all that you remember in detail, Mr. Mondragon?"

Everybody was staring at him. His teachers, the Winifred's, his father, the policemen, all of them. He felt sick out of nowhere.
