Chapter 23: Pressure From All Sides

“Getting close to me isn’t a smart decision.”

“I’ll be the judge of that,” he said decidedly.

“Fine, where are the others?”

“They went off ahead.”

“Why?” I asked, frowning.

Shrugging, he turned his face from me. Something had happened and I had a sinking feeling it had something to do with me.

“Where are we going?” I asked, avoiding answering a question I wouldn’t get an answer to.

“The Infirmary.”

“Why? Did another wolf get attacked?”

Shaking his head, he replied, “I’m just going to check in on his recovery.”

I nodded as we walked in silence, both lost in our own heads.

“You knew that vampire, didn’t you?” he asked, breaking the silence.

“Why do you want to know?” I asked, skeptically.

“What was he to you?” he asked, a hint of vulnerability in his voice that caught me off guard.

“He was nobody,” I replied.

“He wasn’t nobody to you.”

“You’re right. He was somebody. But now that he’s dead, he’s nobody,” I replied honestly.
