First Battle with the Berserk Wolves

Chapter 22 – First Battle with the Berserk Wolves

Like humans, magical beasts are ranked according to Tiers. The purer the beast's bloodline, the higher the rank it could reach.

Berserk wolves are known for reaching Tier 2 upon adulthood, some could even reach Tier 3. As long as the beast's bloodline is pure, they would eventually breakthrough to higher tiers.

Although berserk wolves are low ranked beasts, their innate ability 'Berserk' is a problematic skill to deal with. The moment they smelled blood; they would instantly enter berserk state. Allowing their strength would increase by a stage.

The longer the battle progress, the more ferocious their attacks would become. And as a pack-type creature, any attacker would have to deal with the wrath of dozens of wolves at once. The longer the battle dragged, the more berserk wolves will join the fray.

"This…" Jhin was stunned as he watched the battle ahead. The piercing scream of the wolves and the groans of the soldiers made him realized that they were in a dire situation. He could already imagine what would happen if the wolves defeated the soldiers.

"Bam!"

With a loud roar, Rafael slashed another wolf. But, unlike before, this wolf wasn't cleaved in half. Instead, it was thrown to the distance. Coincidentally, it landed near the ink soldier.

The wolf started moving its limbs, intending to stand up.

"Kill it!"

Seizing the chance, Jhin quickly commanded.

With a dash, the ink soldier rushed towards injured wolf. And before it could stabilize itself, a punch hit its face, sending one of its eyes flying into the air.

[Ding! You have killed a Tier 1 Berserk Wolf. You have received 6 ink drops.]

Hearing the announcement, an idea formed inside Jhin's head. Without hesitation, he commanded two more ink soldiers to sneak into the battlefield. Assisting the battle in the shadows.

"AWOO!"

Seeing their companion dying one after another, the berserk wolves halted in their tracks and started howling at the sky.

"This is bad! They are calling for reinforcement!" Rafael exclaimed as he sent two wolves flying. At this moment, his entire body was drenched in sweat and blood. Claw and bite marks decorated his armor and skin.

Only a few minutes had passed but, due to the overwhelming attacks of the berserk wolves, the wound on Rafael's body had opened. Since then, he started having trouble dealing with the wolves.

Fortunately, they were able to rest inside the shrine for an hour, he was able to recover some of his stamina.

"Rafael! Retreat here!" Noticing wolves actions, Mon quickly shouted before muttering a long incantation.

A half-meter huge magic circle appeared at the tip of his wind arrow. Gale gathered around his bow as an azure hue enveloped the arrow. Pouring a tenth of his remaining mana, he shoots it towards Rafael's direction.

The arrow flew in a straight line. In the blink of an eye, all the berserk wolf near Rafael were sucked towards the arrow. As a result, these wolves were thrown towards the trajectory of the arrow.

Using this opening, Rafael immediately dashed towards the formation.

"Chance!"

Meanwhile, seeing the wolves taking damage and separating from the group. Jhin's eyes lit up. Without hesitation, he commanded the ink soldiers and ordered them to kill the injured wolves.

The arrow continued flying for a hundred meters before it vanished in the fogs together with the wolves.

With the speed of the ink soldiers, Jhin quickly located where the wolves were thrown to. Without hesitation, he commanded the ink soldiers to kill the injured wolves.

[Ding! Congratulations for killing a berserk wolf, you received 8 ink drops]

[Ding! Congratulations for killing a berserk wolf, you received…]

It didn't take long before Jhin killed ten wolves. Easily netting him with 54 ink drops.

At this moment, one of the ink soldiers was rushing towards a limping berserk wolf, preparing to kill it when suddenly…

"RAWRR!"

A loud and menacing roar sounded at the side. The fogs became turbulent as a towering berserk wolf slowly walked out from the fogs and appeared in front of the soldiers.

Its massive ten-meter-tall body released an overwhelming pressure.

The soldiers knees to cave in and tremble.

"Humph!" The towering berserk wolf let out a snort. It raised its enormous paw and swiped towards the direction where Mon's arrow flew earlier.

Instantly, three wind blades appeared in the air and rushed towards the distance.

[Ding! Your ink soldier was injured, do you want to restore it?]

A small window popped up in front of Jhin as his shared vision with his three ink soldiers were cut off. "This…" Jhin was stunned, "It seems like he noticed my actions…"

"Don't heal them just yet," Jhin said as he felt a chill inside. He was afraid that what if the moment he restores the ink soldiers, the towering wolf would shift its focus to him.

"Humans… To dare step in the forbidden territory! Massacre my kin, any last words?" The Berserk Wolf spoke in a slow bone-chilling tone. The moment its words ended, a huge gale swept the surrounding, clearing the fogs within half-kilometer radius around the wolf.

Under the influence of the scarce moonlight, its red fur shimmered like amber fire. Paired with the countless pairs of bloodshot eyes from the forest behind it, Jhin felt as though he had just entered hell. He could feel his hair standing on end.

"Is this the end?"

Just the aura it released has petrified the soldiers. Even the unconscious soldiers had their eyebrows tightly knit.

"To disturb the peace of the forest, as well as ignore the pact signed during time immemorial, is this the will of the human emperor?" The berserk wolf asked. Then its expression turned fierce, "Does he want to experience the wrath of the forest?"

The towering wolf raised its paw, its sharp claws shimmered, "Since that's the case, allow me to end all your suffering."

Azure light surged on the wolf's claw as an overbearing pressure descended from the heavens. All the soldiers including Jhin felt their knees clattering, threatening to kneel.

Swish!

The wolf swiped its claw and attacked the soldiers.

"Will I die now?"

Despair filled Jhin's eyes. He thought that the God had given him the chance to learn the truth about his past. Yet, it was all but a false hope. Once again, regret surged through Jhin's entire being. "Damn it! Being weak is a sin! Just like before… I couldn't resist death!"

Suddenly, a thought flashed inside his head, and he quickly said, "System! I want to enter the eternal coffin!"
