Chapter 143

***

Obas, the young dark-haired man who had recently joined under Admiral Max, looked at the monstrous creature above, with nine heads as it burned the sea.

His body shook and he stumbled on the ground. "W -What momentous power! Luffy!"

*bzzzzt*

Suddenly, an electric body started forming next to him as soon as he said that. Negan appeared with his golden bat leaning on his shoulder. "Did you just yell out 'Luffy'? I just miss-heard that?"

Negan's gaze was colder than any winter as he stared at the new Marine. This made Obas swallow in worry, he had only recently joined here, but seeing Negan's gaze made him contemplate many things if he should go and try to save Luffy.

"Sorry, I was just shocked and yelled out that name." Obas straightened himself and sighed.

Negan's eyes narrowed in suspicion. "Is that so? Then… you wouldn't do something as stupid as going and trying to save this Pirate Captain that you seemingly know nothing about. Right?"

Obas looked towards the sea, trying to keep a calm head. But Negan's sharp gaze caught the small shakes of uncertainty and fear in the man. "You know, if you make a move right now I will kill you. From what I heard from the head trainer, you should be Obas, a promising new recruiter."

The young man winced, once again taken by surprise that Negan seemed to already know about him.

'He is smarter than he looks.' - thought Obas, a little taken aback by how scarily observant Negan had been. Just mentioning Luffy's name had put the man on the edge and he wasn't letting go of anything. No matter what he did now, he knew that all of their eyes would be on him.

Obas looked at Max's nine-headed dragon form, knowing that he couldn't do anything, and sighed. "Sorry," he rubbed the scar over his eyes as he apologized. "I won't do anything like this again."

Negan's face lit up in a smile so large that it seemed to split his face in two. He then went and slapped the young man on the back goodheartedly. "Good, good, sorry about this. But we have had a problem with spies recently. And I am just doing my job, which is finding them and then torturing them. Also, I.Love.My.Job!!"

Obas glanced at Negan, as he kept on rambling about his job. The once scary intelligence behind those eyes was gone and he seemed like a whole different person now. Once again, Obas almost made the mistake of underestimating the lighting man's intelligence.

'At first, I was only cautious of Max and a couple of his smart attendants. But Negan… this guy is probably the second man I needed to be most cautious of.' - contemplated Obas, bowing slightly toward his "friend" trying to hide his real intentions. His heart was beating crazily, as he almost felt like his identity got exposed here.

'The Strawhat Armada, annihilated!!'

'Admiral once again shows his willingness to take matters into his own hands!'

_____

That was the headline the next day after the Strawhats were destroyed. Yet, the main crew was still alive and well, as if nothing had happened to them and even Nico Robin had been returned. But everyone else involved was dead.

Akainu was in his office as he stared into the headline and his jaw clenched so hard he bit onto the cigar he was smoking. The cigar fell on the ground, but the Fleet Admiral didn't even seem to notice as his eyes burned in an unquenched fury. "What the hell is this bastard Morgan doing!! Why are his headlines always covering Max in a heroic light!"

He was angry because Big News Morgan would always care more about the scoop than the views or money. Even his best clients would eventually get a bad headline from them. Yet, Max was different. Every little action that he did and some great actions that he didn't even do were praised in the Newspapers.

*purupurupuru~*

Suddenly his transponder snail rang and he angrily picked it up. "Who is it?!" He yelled out angrily.

"Your superiors," one of the Five Elders from the other side answered calmly.

"What do you want?" Akainu clenched his hand on the transponder snail voice receiver, almost breaking it.

"We saw the headline," the Elders informed him, the tone of their voice was strangely calm.

"Then why are you so calm about it!" The Fleet Admiral was annoyed at the old men.

"The plan is finished, everything is in place and Max's death is guaranteed to happen within this week."

Akainu clenched his jaw, at first he was angry, but he finally got some good news. Max had positioned himself in a position of power and fame that it would be political suicide to kick him off the Marines. If they had Big News Morgan on their side, then they could make up something bad and kick him out.

But it seemed like Max had gotten to the man first and checkmated the World Government before the game had even started. Akainu had initially been full with Max, and would even warn and help him. The Five Elders had ordered him to do something about him, but he had been hesitant.

Sure, Max wasn't someone who followed the law perfectly, but he did more good than bad. Now though, everything has changed and Akainu saw what he had blinded himself from when Max took over Wano. He wasn't here to just loosely follow the law, Max instead wanted to make his law… he was sneakily preparing to destroy the World Government.

His plan though hadn't been to fight them head-on. Instead, he slowly was taking the Marines over by having young recruits go and work under him. Then he killed off the Admirals, Vice Admirals were 'disappearing on their line of work' and much more.

This whole situation had gotten out of hand. Max had been checkmating them every move along the game, and for a certain time, no one even knew what was happening.

What made Max dangerous wasn't necessarily his strength, though it did contribute to the overall danger he posed. But what made Max truly deadly was his mind, the man had planned around some of the smartest people in the world. Even Vegapunk had been outsmarted twice when his poison didn't work. Meaning that he had predicted something that even a man who is said to be 500 years ahead of his time in intelligence would do.

Akainu clenched his fist, muttering. "Max must die, at all costs."

At the same time, the man who was getting schemed against, was in a room with Reiju, looking through the shops of a coffin-maker's of Wano. Of course, they were under disguise as they looked.

"Do you think a red coffin would look good on me?" Asked Max, looking at a red coffin his size and laying down on it. "But it's uncomfortable as hell."

"I think a dark coffin would exonerate the silver color of your hair more," Reiju added her input.

The coffin maker stared at the young couple weirdly. To him, it looked like Max and Reiju were here to shop for their wedding clothes, and not a coffin in which one of them would be buried.

*sigh* "Young people nowadays, they get crazier every day," grumbled the old coffin maker.

Max and Reiju heard the old man and chuckled. Their experience wasn't something most people would abide by.

"Death is quite a delightful place to hide," Max whispered to Reiju, and she shrugged.

"Be careful," she warned him, knowing that now the battle had gone and became very dangerous. "Don't make me a single mother."

He only smiled at her gently. "Don't worry, I will just go and get some milk."

After saying that, Max chuckled as if it was an inside joke. Reiju didn't understand what he meant.
