Chapter 90
____
Whitebeard's maneuver had overwhelmed the initial reaction of the marines and thousands were killed in an instant. Many of the injured Marines' blood-curdling screams rang out. Some were even spitting out parts of their organs, looking at them with despair.
The brutality of this war was already sickening and it hadn't even started yet. There was no mercy for the weak, they just died in droves.
"Canons!" Yelled out Sengoku, his voice vibrating through the battlefield. Despair had already affected some of the Marines, but this gave some hope that they also had their monsters in the Marine Force.
It was stupid of them to assume that Sengoku or anyone else would fight for them. This was the reality of war, a general would never risk their life for a normal soldier.
The cannons that were aimed at the sea turned around, each of them aimed at Whitebeard's ship.
Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!...
The shots rang out in a strange but rhythmic way. Even my heart was pounding as the sky suddenly turned dark, thousands of cannonballs were littering the clouds. Yet before even the first had landed, the canons still kept shooting. Adding even more cannonballs to the mix.
But even with all that, I could see that Whitebeard wasn't worried. The old man even seemed amused by it. He casually brought his hand back and punched upward.
*CRACK!*
The sky cracked, it felt like the heavens themselves were going to come down.
After the first cannonball exploded, it was like a chain reaction.
BOOOOOOOOOM!!!
The sky burned, and the smell of gunpowder littered the battlefield. Whitebeard's men jumped off their main ships and the rest of the Allied Crews with the Whitebeard pirates also arrived. Each started taking out the forces in the outer walls, taking down the cannons. While breaking some walls down to let their crews enter.
It was an amazing show of power and… I loved every second of it. Both sides were gonna get hurt more this time around and it was beneficial for me.
There was a strange fascination to see both marines and pirates fighting. Amongst them were even some merciful people, those who would cry out for their enemy and show mercy once they begged for life.
But all of them got stabbed in the back for it, there was no exception to this within my eyesight. After all, some might have been lost in their sense of mercy, but this was war, mercy doesn't have a place here.
Others who were fierce to survive got ganged upon.
The battlefield had turned into utter chaos. Especially since the Pirate Captains from the New World had already slaughtered Marines in the hundreds.
Vice Admirals clashed with those Pirates who had made a name for themselves in the New World. It wasn't easy on either side, because while in war, there were no one-on-one fights. Someone could stab you in the back out of nowhere.
Against some enemies, even a scratch would be the difference between life and death.
Any wars that I had fought on before were like child play compared to this. Because when I start a war, the situation would always be to my advantage and had huge returns for me. So in comparison, my wars were like child's play in comparison to this.
"Amazing, isn't it?" whispered Negan. Drawing my attention away from the carnage taking place.
"Yeah, it shows the fragility of human life." I agreed with him on that one. There was a special feeling to this, though I can't say that I liked the sensation of it. Each of these people had someone waiting for them to return home, a family to go back.
What would happen to their families once they died? This world didn't have job opportunities around, and the Marine life insurance wasn't good. Meaning it was nonexistent. Once a marine died, his family would get nothing. Most people mourn those who died, but I felt more sorry for those they left behind.
"Whether you are a King or a street sweeper, everyone dances with the grim reaper," I whispered. That was what this battlefield said, as even the strong ones had to one day die.
Amongst the Admirals, Kizaru was the first one to move, and he shot a barrage of beams at Whitebeard. The shining light seemed like a miniature sun had appeared and no one could directly look at the Admiral.
Thousands of light particle lasers soared through the air at light speed, but none of them landed courtesy of Marco. Then both Admiral and Yonko Commander clashed mid-air, their fight delving to crashing into walls and buildings.
*CRACK!*
Again Whitebeard attacked, and this time the sea churned like boiling water. Tsunami-sized waves rose high enough that each of them had the size to destroy Marineford.
{Ice Age}
But it wasn't meant to be, as Aokiji intervened and froze both gigantic waves in an instant. "Oy, old man. We can't have you sinking the Symbol of Justice like this."
Whiteboard smirked confidently as if nothing could stand in his way. "Try and stop me, brat."
Aokiji didn't say anything and just started falling towards Whitebeard with a concentrated look on his face.
But the Admiral had tunnel vision towards Whitebeard, the old man was just that much of a threat. So he didn't notice Juzo running toward him at incredible speeds about to shoulder-bash Aokiji aside.
<Soru>
In an instant, I was in front of Jozu, and the gorilla-looking man seemed surprised for a second. But he resolved himself and continued with his shoulder bash, as long as he bashed me aside, he could still go for Aokiji.
But sadly for him, I wasn't that easy to handle as I imbued my Armament Haki with Conqueror's Haki.
BAAAAM!
We clashed, and he pushed me back two steps at first. But I then stood my ground.
"Sorry about this, but I have my duty to do here," I whispered to Jozu. These were all just words to distract him. I didn't have to interfere in this, but there were benefits to doing so. "Hope you can succeed in this."
"Yeah," he agreed, bringing back his fist and swinging at my face. "I also have my duty too."
[Brilliant Punk]
His attack was like a fast jab, faster than a snake's bite. I tilted my head to the side, my eyes shone red for a split second, dodging the diamond-encrusted fist.
"Well, let the stronger man win then." With that said, I pointed my other palm at his stomach and Armament Haki gathered in my hand.
<Shockwave>
An invisible repulsion force of Haki traveled from my palm and hit him straight on. He winced, but didn't give up and kept punching at me.
Though his punches were fast enough to leave afterimages, none of them were able to land on me. Each attack was already five seconds too late by the time he attempted it.
Baam!
I punched him on the chin. Juzo's diamond-hard skin cracked as my Haki and his defense clashed.
<Soru>
Fwish!
I appeared behind him, and my knee was already imbued with Haki aiming for his spine. The hit landed before Juzo could react in time.
*Crack!*
"Ugh!" the big man gasped in pain and fell on his knees. Juzo's spine was dislocated, he was done for this battle. But his will was still unbroken as he grabbed into my shoulder. "I will take you down with me!"
In response, I grabbed him by the face and whispered. "Again, sorry about this,"
<Shockwave>
*Cough!* *Cough!* *Cough!*...
Juzo coughed out blood on the ground and his eyes rolled at the back of his head. He slumped down on his blood and fell unconscious.
His paramecia fruit was amazing, and it made his defense impenetrable by any normal attack, even Haki couldn't pierce it unless it was at very high levels.
"You think you will get away with this?" asked Vista, who slashed at me from behind. His swords glistered in the sun as flower petals surrounded me, each imbued with Haki.
Clang!
The sound of metal clashing rang out and Negan said. "Of course he will. Max has a talent for getting out of sticky situations."
I smiled at my friend's words. It was good having someone who had your back.
But that feeling didn't last long as I turned toward Whitebeard and saw him just about to hit Aokiji point-blank in the face while the Admiral was on his knees, clutching at his bleeding side.
"Brats like you should know their place!" Boomed Whitebeard and he swung his fist down.
*CRACK!*
But he was met with a lava fist that clashed with his attack. Akainu had appeared in front of Aokiji and clashed with the Legendary Pirate.
Akainu looked at his fellow Admiral with disdain and snorted. "What were you thinking? Getting injured so early in the fight?"
"Something is wrong," Aokiji reported while breathing heavily and with difficulty. "Those aren't the moves of an old man and that haki. It feels like I was fighting the Whitebeard of ten or twenty years ago."
Akainu narrowed his eyes in suspicion. He knew that the Admirals weren't the kind to fall against a weakened Whitebeard with one foot in the grave. Even the most careless one, Kizaru, wouldn't get done so fast by the old pirate.
"Yeah, the old-timer isn't what he used to be. I can tell that much too." Akainu argued, his disdain barely hidden for all to see. "But even then, if you had been careful you wouldn't have needed me to save you."
"Are you brats done talking?" asked Whitebeard. Though his question sounded like that of a gentleman, he was already halfway into his attack.
*CRACK!*
Akainu's arm enlarged and covered in lava as he clashed with Whitebeard's quakes that cracked the space around them. Both powers were at a stalemate at first, but the old man slowly but surely started getting an advantage, making the Admiral flinch back.
That didn't last long as Aokiji was back in the fight and in a split second had gone behind Whitebeard's unprotected back.
[White Partizan]
A giant ice phoenix shot out of his rigid arm and it hit the old man, freezing him into an ice block in an instant. At the same time, Akainu got a chance to shoot his lava towards Whitebeard. The old man couldn't break through the ice prison before the lava engulfed him. Now it was checkmate.
{100,000 Pound Shoulder Throw}
Suddenly a giant pillar of salty water rose from the sea over the wall and hit Whitebeard's ship like a sniper bullet. It covered the ship in salty water, and at the same time stopped Akainu's attack, turning the magma into obsidian.
Jinbe jumped out of the sea and was ready to join the battle too.
Edward Weevil noticed him and jumped up with surprising nimbleness. "Fishy! No! Battle!"
The self-proclaimed son of Whitebeard jumped up and used his halberd to hit Jinbe, who stopped the attack with one of his Fishman Palm Strikes.
BAAAM!!
I saw all of this happening around me, and there were many choices where I could interfere and change things.
Doflamingo and Hancock had joined the battle, both messing around while Mihawk still stood atop the wall, looking down on the battlefield.
His hawk-like eyes didn't seem to find any worthy opponent. So he just stood there, looking kind of bored.
"Negan, don't take too long," I warned him before jumping off Whitebeard's ship and going back on the ground.
Looking around, there was something suspicious going on here. The first was that Luffy was nowhere to be seen, even though I caught a glimpse of him with Whitebeard when the old man landed.
The Pacifista who had already stormed the battlefield were also dealing heavy damages to the pirates. One of them looked at me funny. "Target spotted," it said in a robotic voice. "Bear D. Max, a threat to the World Government detected."
"Oh~ now isn't that something?" I whistled and looked behind and stared at the man walking towards me with a face-splitting smirk. He was someone I was quite familiar with. "So, has the World Government finally found its perfect chance to kill me?"
____
A/N: Max hasn't transformed into his Zoan form. He now knows the importance of saving energy, even a little of it, if he doesn't need to transform then he won't.
P.S: This is all due to him entering unconsciousness after the fight with Big Mom, if he had just a little bit of more energy back then. It would have been overwhelming victory as he could have destroyed the Big Mom crew in his Emperor Form.
