I trembled awake. My eyes water as my head pulsated with pain. I sat up and hastily glanced around, noticing a sleeping dragon on a metal circle. A crisp breeze lifted in the air, making me quiver and pull the blanket closer to me. The calls in my head made it difficult to conceive straight.
Then, unexpectantly, a sob broke out. I jerked a hand over my mouth and peeked at the nested dragon. Salty water slipped down my cheek. I forced my body to stay still and my tears to stop, no matter how painful the feeling was. With a raw throat, I clench my eyes shut and repeated to myself that it was just a dream. It wasn't real.
What if it was? I shook the voice out of my head and prevailed quiet. As a mother would rock a baby to sleep, I ever so gently moved back and forth, comforting myself. This was still somewhat new to me, waking up with tears and imaginary betrayal. Although the speeches in my head kept saying it was real, I knew it wasn't. At least I don't think it was.
I forced myself to stop moving and take steady breaths. After a few minutes of calming down, I slowly let my hand drop to my lap. Like the countless times before; I wanted to cry, I wanted to scream, but anybody could hear me. On nights like these, it was hard or sometimes impossible to go back to sleep.
So, for me to free my head, I would sometimes sit in the one place everybody knew was mine. Although I was the youngest and probably the most unaware, I still had a place to go to. It was located at the edge of Hunter's Island, where even the most oblivious of guards knew this area was off-limits.
The area was next to a cavern filled with the supplies needed for hunting. Not only was this one of the best places to ambush, but also the best place to catch me off guard. Since I learned to enjoy my own company, this place was practically made for me. At night, when everybody is in a slumber, only then do I dare to enter my little haven.
It has a pleasant view of the stars and sunsets. But what I relish the most was when the sun awoke from the horizon. The way the colors blended with the sky and the manner how the air emanated fresh and new always had me on my toes. In my eyes, it was a sign of a brand-new day, a fresh start, and a wholesome chance.
I blink a bit and brush the droplets from my eyes with icy hands. Swiftly, I jump out of bed and quietly jog downstairs. My hands trembled as I inaudibly opened the door. I slip out of the hut and let the crisp air fill my lungs. I descended the stairs and leisurely walked towards only what I can assume was the edge.
The daggers hiding in my pockets were scraping softly together, making me cringe. I turned around and watched as the sun slowly but surely gleamed on the shelters. A very delicate smile intersected my lips. A sign; sang a small voice. It's a sign, the voice repeated.
I felt a surge of happiness collide with my heart. It is a sign...I slowly came to a conclusion. The smile spread wider on my face as I turned around to face the shining sun. I skipped to the edge and let myself swallow the breathtaking view.
Maybe The Edge wasn't that bad after all..."Good to see you are awake." A voice spoke behind me. The voice didn't exactly sound friendly or welcoming. I slowly turn around to face the stranger.
On a blue dragon stood the ferocious blonde Viking with her ax held ready in her hand. " Good morning." I sarcastically mumble. "Enjoying the view?" Astrid asked with a dumb smirk on her face. " Yes, actually," I said with more confidence. I was more than unsettled about the game she was playing. It was a frequent game I saw in the behavior of dragons-where the predator would stalk it's prey until it was too late.
Astrid knew more about this island than I do, which aids in her favor. But what she doesn't know; is that I have a weapon of my own.
"Good, you won't be enjoying it any longer." She said, breaking into a smile. " How's that good-" " You'll be coming with me." Heather interrupted, her glistening dragon landing on the ground. I observed her movement closely as she leaped off her dragon and walked to me with rope in her hands. My instincts went crazy, screaming, and trying to jerk me away from them. But I persisted and stood my ground - a little rope doesn't scare me.
" What's that for?" I asked cautiously. " You'll see." She answered, breaking into the same smile Astrid had. Heather shuffled behind me and linked my wrists together. They were locking me up, weren't they? I asked through my expression. I knew if I fought against them, I'll lose their trust- which I don't think I have at the moment. She forcefully pushed me forward, almost making me trip over my own feet.
Then, just as I was about to climb on the dragon's back, a dagger clattered to the ground. My eyes went wide as I silently said a quick prayer to the gods. I turn my head ever so slowly to the dagger, instantly wishing I didn't. There, shining under the sun like a trophy, was the very same dagger that held the Dragon Hunter insignia...
