A Phone Call

"Hey." David started with a surprised tone.

"Hey you. You sound surprised."

"Yeah, I just didn't think you'd actually pick up."

"Well I did say I'd answer your call, didn't I?" Maddy smiled.

She heard David let out a soft laugh on the other line.

"That you did. So how's it going over there? What time is it? Did I wake you up? Should I call you later?" He frantically spoke.

"Oh calm down, I'm wide awake. It's going...okay over here," Maddy says, drawing out the pause.

"Don't think I can't tell when you lie. What's going on?"

DAMNIT

"Ugh, well, Valerie and I got into a fight and things escalated pretty quickly and I kinda blew up on her."

"Uh oh. How'd you even start fighting? You guys seemed so close when I last saw you."

"Well, she pretty much ran off and we had to look for her for about three hours until we found her all up on some random surfer guy." Maddy explained.

"Oh, well that seems like a valid reason get angry."

"I hope so, I was angry in the beginning but now I just feel guilty. Plus, I'm by myself in a hotel room and don't have anyone to talk to."

"Well you're talking to me, aren't you?" David asked.

Maddy couldn't help but purse her lips into a smile.

"I guess I am, and thanks for being my shrink."

"Anytime." He laughed over the line.

Why am I smiling so much? We're just two kids talking....

"Are we still on for coffee when you come back?" David asks.

"Oh, duh. You think I'm just gonna pass up an offer for someone to pay for my coffee?"

"You're gonna make me "forget my wallet" just by saying that." He joked.

"Don't you dare."

The two laughed at each other and started wrapping up e conversation.

"Although I'd LOVE to keep talking, I don't wanna fall asleep in a bathtub and drown." Maddy claimed.

"Wow, I'm THAT boring, huh?"

"Oh, calm down big guy. I'll talk to you soon."

"Deal." David agreed before saying a quick goodbye.

Maddy hung up and let out a groan that contained a mix of emotions. Mostly good ones.

*10 Minutes Later*

When she'd dried off and put her pajamas on, Maddy walked out of the bathroom and jumped with surprise as she saw Valerie laying on the bed Madeleine was meant to sleep on.

Can I get a break please?

Maddy let out a long sigh and headed into the conversation that the girls both knew was coming.
