Get Engaged!

Jason introduced Selina to his parents properly after seeing their bodies stiffen on the couch.

"Mom. Dad. Selina is my official girlfriend." He reworded his introduction for them to process this thought.

Like splashing boiled water during negative twenty-five degrees weather, their smiles froze on the spot when they heard his words. Julia was the first to break the silence after seeing the couple's linked hands.

With a small smile, she replied. "Oh my. Sorry for the delayed response. We weren't ready nor prepared for Jason's confession about his relationship. This son has never spoken much to us over the phone. If we didn't come back out of nowhere, he might not introduce you to us until a year later."

She stood up and gave Selina a short hug. "Thank you for taking care of my son while we were gone. My name is Julia Hui. You can call me auntie."

Selina relaxed slightly. "Auntie, it's Jason who has been taking care of me. I haven't done much for him."

"Who says you haven't? Mom, dad. When those artists left the company in the middle of working on a huge investment project, it was Selina who took over. She's doing a fantastic job. Her studio is upstairs if you want to take a look later." Jason felt her grip tightened from nervousness. He caressed the back of her hand with his thumb to reassure her that everything was alright.

After Julia separated from Selina, she sat back down on the couch and elbowed her husband. Nick eyed the couple from head to toe and forced a smile. Staring deeply into his son's eyes, he could see the strong determination of his choice and how unwavering he was.

Sighing, he walked over and patted him on the shoulder. "Is she really the girl you've been searching for?"

Jason nodded. "Yes."

"Then, as I have promised. Congratulations on getting yourself a girlfriend. Once you've made this choice, you can't turn back." Nick squinted at Jason to see if Jason felt even a tad of regret. Smiling, Jason raised their intertwined hand.

"I'm sure about it." Jason answered with a chuckle.

"Exactly how sure is that?" Nick questioned him with a raised brow.

"As sure as you choosing mom to be your wife." He responded.

"Ahahaha, son then you're actually not that sure!" Nick slapped his knee cap as he laughed loudly. The loud laughter he released was short lived as Julia twisted his left ear with her other hand on her hip.

"What did you just say? You weren't sure about me? Huuuh?" The devilish grin on her face meant calamity was arriving.

"No. No. You didn't hear my entire speech. I said I wasn't that sure if I could be your ideal husband even though I was absolutely positively sure about you being my lovely wife." He hissed when she applied more pressure on his ear.

"Oh, really?! You're sleeping on the floor tonight! If we even stay in the same room, that is." Julia released his ear and ignored him.

She walked towards Selina with a smile. "Since you two love each other, do you have any plans for the future? Such as getting married?"

Selina's face turned bright red when she heard that question. They only dated for a short while. There was no way she would consider that question right now. Before she could provide a response, Jason already answered in her place.

"We're still in the beginning phases of dating. As for engagement and marriage, these topics will come up later." He gave his mom a warning glance to not go any further with the discussion.

Understanding his meaning, she stopped asking questions to avoid making Selina feel uncomfortable. Julia tied up her hair and walked towards the kitchen. "I'll make dinner for tonight. Selina, what do you like to eat? Let's put all the groceries away and see what we could make first. Let auntie make food for tonight."

She pulled Selina to the kitchen while Celinda carried groceries to the kitchen. Jason knew she purposely took Selina away from him, so he could have a proper talk with his father upstairs. Celinda wished she could help her brother, but there was a limit to what she could do.

Jason and Nick went up to the study room to continue talking about him and Selina. Inside the room, Nick sat with crossed legs on Jason's massage chair.

"Since you've found her, your mother and I will accept her like we've promised. But for your auntie and uncle's side..." His head started to hurt at the thoughts of telling his best friends to cancel the engagement between Jason and their daughter.

Jason nodded. "Honestly, I've never met auntie and uncle before. Our family had been friends with them ever since you guys knew each other. Still, this engagement with their daughter is something you four decided. It wasn't what we wanted. I'm sure their daughter wouldn't want to marry a stranger. Also, I've already found Selina and I love her more than enough to make her my wife. All we need is a ring, bouquet, right timing and a yes as an answer from her."

Nick agreed with his suggestion and dialed Aaron's number. "Hi Aaron, it's been a while. I'm sorry to bother you during the evening, but I want you to help me buy the biggest diamond ring, ten thousand stalks of roses and decorate a wedding venue for next month. Your boss will be proposing, and we will make sure his girlfriend is willing to be his lonely soul's partner for life."

"Dad! Aaron! Don't listen to him and forget everything you just heard from him! There will be no wedding nor proposal!!" Jason took the phone from his dad and panted heavily as if his heart could stop any moments.

"Son, I understand you love her. The problem is we are the ones breaking it off with my best friend's family. Unless you are married to somebody else or getting engaged to someone; I don't see why they would agree so easily to calling off the engagement. Our families were the most compatible. Why did you think we had that engagement set up? It's not just because our families are close friends."

"Also, you did meet her before when you were two years old. She was just swimming in her mother's womb. But you met her through her mother's tummy and even called her cute. Damn! Kids change so fast these days. Anyway, you need to at least be engaged with Selina to reject their daughter." Nick told him openly about the situation.

His friends were understanding human beings as long as there was a proper reasoning behind the decision. Having a girlfriend is the same as picking cabbages. Girlfriends can come and go. Fiancée and wife, on the other hand, holds more significance.

Jason shook his head. "I won't do anything that'll scare her away. I've waited all these years for her and can wait another decade for her to accept me. No matter what, I won't agree to get engaged for anything other than our love for each other."

Nick surrendered at the end and got up from his seat. Before exiting the study room, he said. "My best friends happened to be in the city this time. I don't know how long they're going to stay. I told them about how capable you were in handling the company, so they wanted to come over and have a small tour. You can explain to them about the engagement afterward."
