Test Day

"Eden Durreye! Eden! Wake up! Wake up! Today is the day!"

A young boy with blue eyes and brown hair wakes up. Today is the biggest day of his life.

At the age of ten, the human body is able to begin attracting and absorbing the elements. All youths in the kingdom of Rivenhart are required to take the element test to determine if they are able to cast magic. The elements are: earth, fire, water, wind, light, darkness, and void. Light and darkness being rare, and void being extremely rare. If the youth is able to attract an element, the child is guaranteed a promising future. This was the rule of society.

A bright light is shone on Eden's face.

"Mom! You don't have to use your magic to wake me up!"

"Little Eden, if you don't get up I'll do more than shine a little light in your eyes!" chuckled Carolyn. A blonde-haired beautiful lady with the brightest blue eyes walks in. "How can you still be sleeping when today may determine the path of your life! I hope you get light magic like your Mom so we can be healers together! Or maybe you'll get fire magic like your dad and become a soldier of the kingdom!

Eden's father was currently known as Firewhip Roan. He made his name on the battlefield wielding a whip that would light up in fire and strike fear into the opposition. Currently Eden's father was out being stationed at the Southern border of the kingdom.

It is Eden's dream to be like his father, a hero on the battlefield. Eden's hope was to get the Fire element. Firewhip Eden! Firewhip Roan! The heroic family duo of Rivenhart!

"Okay Mom! I got it, give me five minutes more" replied Eden.

Elkwood Village is a small town near the center of Rivenhart. Located in a mountainous region filled with lush forests. The residents of Elkwood do enough to get by. Of the small population of Elkwood, relatively few are able to use magic.

Eden and his mom walked over to the village square where a group of villagers were gathering to have their kids be examined.

A young girl with blue hair and her father are seen walking up to Eden and his mom.

"Hello Mrs. Durreye, is Eden taking the element examination as well today?" the father asked.

"Yes Engle, we hope that Eden can get a great element" Carolyn responded. "I hope that Aerith is able to attract a good element as well"

"I hope that Aerith gets the wind element like myself. Her chances are low though since my wife has no elemental affinity." Engle responds in hopefulness. Engle Tempest was a soldier who was stationed at Elkwood village when he was in the military. His family specializes in wind magic and his father was even the headmaster of an academy. Engle loved the tranquility of the village so much during his time in the military that he decided to permanently relocate here.

In Rivenhart, youths' who's parents were shown to have elemental ability were more likely to be able to attract the elements. Hence, when it comes to marriage and childrearing, those with elemental ability usually seek one another as partners. One's bloodline does also have a high effect on what potential elements and traits that a youth may obtain as well. Noble family bloodlines tend to always have the highest possible rate for attracting the same elements and traits due to them always finding a strong partner.

----

The crowd began to gather around a young man in his mid-twenties. Many excited kids were waiting for their chance to see if they can call upon the elements. A young wizard was placed here by the academy to scout and discover new talent. Surrounding him were 10 soldiers dressed in silver armor with the image of a golden lion emblazoned on their capes.

Next to the wizard was a crystal ball, the Sage Orb. This orb was responsible for testing all the youths of the Rivenhart Kingdom. Year round the orb is moved across the kingdom to all of the different towns and villages of the kingdom.

This orb was gifted to the first King of Rivenhart, King Hearth, by the Sage of Many Colors, master of all the elements, before he went into solitude to live out the rest of his life a thousand years ago. Not just the Rivenhart kingdom was given this, all the other human kingdoms were as well.

The elemental colors the orb would display consist of the following:

Red - Fire

Blue - Water

Green - Wind

Yellow - Earth

Black - Darkness

White - Light

Grey - Void

"My name is Ezel, a wind mage and the exam proctor. Today is the testing day this month for magical elements. Please line up and place your hand on this crystal ball. If you are able to attract an element, the crystal ball will light up a specific color. In some special cases, one may be able to attract multiple elements, in this case the crystal ball will shine with all those colors at once. Lastly, if you are extremely lucky, you could potentially attract a unique element trait. If that is the case, a symbol will appear at the center of the color displayed within the crystal ball. An example would be myself, I have wind magic, when testing the orb displayed a symbol of a lightning bolt, as a result the color green came up with a lightning bolt in the center."

One popular story is of King Ash, the king of Rivenhart who specialized in fire magic, with a unique trait in magma. When he tested for his element, the crystal ball emitted a red light with a volcano.

Ezel put on a fake smile. The truth is that only a small percentage of youth are able to attract the elements.

For those who are unable to gather elements there are still many other paths, one can still become a soldier, merchant, farmer, life would be simply that of a mere mortal here.

My first attempt at a story. I hope that I fleshed out a bit in this introductory chapter on how magic works. I'll try my best to push out at minimum three chapters a week.
