Me? You Can't Afford It

Outside the radiology department of the hospital, Eve sat listlessly on a bench.

"I heard that Dr. Evans at Northern City Hospital is exceptionally skilled, studied abroad, and is an expert in cardiovascular surgery," remarked two family members nearby.

"Can we afford to have this doctor perform surgery on our daughter?" Inquired one.

"I've asked around. He is the hospital director, not someone you can easily engage," responded the other.

As the doors of the radiology department opened, a patient was wheeled out.

"Next, Eve Jones," the nurse called out.

Eve snapped out of her thoughts and stood up, walking towards the nurse.

The nurse glanced around, "Are you alone? Where are your family members?"

Eve hesitated for a moment, "I don't have any family members."

The nurse frowned, "The doctor should have informed you that for coronary angiography, you must have a family member present to sign the informed consent form. In case of any unexpected situations, the presence of a family member is necessary."

Eve nodded, "I know, but I can sign the consent form by myself."

"It's against our regulations; you better call your family member," said the nurse before entering the department.

Resigned, Eve had to return to the inpatient department.

After descending the elevator, she saw a group of doctors making rounds.

Leading the group was a figure clad in a white coat, tall and slender, with phoenix-like eyes focused intently, attentively listening to the doctors beside him as they briefed him on the patients' conditions.

He seemed surrounded by stars, clearly exuding an extraordinary presence.

Approaching, Eve took a couple of steps, about to call out to him.

However, he turned his head, cast a fleeting glance at her, as if she were a passerby, then withdrew his gaze and entered the adjacent ward.

Suppressing her emotions, Eve bit her lip and returned to her room.

After packing her things, she went to see the attending physician and decided to undergo conservative medication.

"Miss Jones, you..."

The attending physician, a woman in her forties, was both speechless and helpless towards Eve.

"Your pregnancy and the delay for the sake of a healthy baby have exacerbated your condition. And now the situation is dire. Why are you not taking this seriously?"

Eve forced a stiff smile, "I will come back for treatment as soon as possible."

The doctor, unable to persuade Eve otherwise, reluctantly prescribed medication.

Having obtained the medication and completed the discharge procedures, Eve waited at the hospital entrance for a while before finally getting a cab.

The journey was delayed due to a traffic accident, and she arrived at the villa very late.

She pursed her lips, took a shower in her room, and changed into a newly bought silk, transparent camisole before entering the master bedroom.

There, leaning against the bed and reading a book, was none other than Bryan Evans, the revered director of Northern City Hospital during the day.

His hair was still slightly damp, casually pulled to the back.

Unlike the refined aura when wearing a white coat, at this moment, with the bathrobe open, there was a hint of wildness and allure.

Eve climbed onto the bed, cautiously asking, "What are you reading? Look at me..."

She sneakily glanced at the book, feeling somewhat dumbfounded—it was entirely in French.

Bryan raised his eyes slowly, and surveyed Eve's nightwear, especially lingering at the neckline, with a hint of mockery, "In books, there is beauty akin to jade, but the jade does not possess your licentiousness."

In a moment, the jade was discarded on the floor, and Eve's clothes were removed.

Afterward, Eve lay in Bryan's arms, "The doctor said no sex after the angiography."

Bryan kept his eyes closed and didn't respond.

Eve had to continue, "But I didn't undergo the angiography."

"Suit yourself."

He didn't care about the reason, but Eve felt compelled to finish, "I couldn't bear to harm Dr. Evans's reputation."

"Afraid to die?"

"Yes."

Eve looked up and kissed Bryan's jaw, "So, can you perform the surgery for me?"

"Me? You can't afford it."
