Secrets of the Miller Family

Maya watched as her cousin glared at her, like everyone else, Gary Miller and the Miller family were not without their secrets.

Her father and uncle didn't know that Maya was well aware of the information they had been trying so desperately to hide. Unfortunately for them, it seems that Gary managed to piss off the wrong person.

"Till your grandfather hears about this mess and summons us all to his office," Harold said as he placed a hand on his son's shoulder, diverting the attention.

"Why would grandfather call me and my father in as well?" Maya asked as she raised an eyebrow at her uncle. "This is Gary's mess, only Gary should be held accountable for it."

"Don't you dare pretend that you had nothing to do about this or that there is nothing you can do about it!" Gary raised his voice at Maya, making his father grip his shoulder tighter.

Maya smiled, she knew that her uncle didn't want to piss her off.

If what the rumors said were true, then Mr. Alistair De La Rue was doing all of this for her because he saw Gary bullying her. If that were the case, then it would only be Maya capable of convincing him to relent.

"I have no control over Mr. De La Rue," Maya told her cousin. "He is his own man and makes his own decisions. What makes you think that someone as irrelevant as I could convince him to do something."

"Maya…" Harold groaned as he didn't want to explain the situation again.

"Brother, my daughter has already told you, there is nothing she can do about Mr. De La Rue being offended by Gary," Edmond said as he decided to put an end to the discussion.

"But she can!" Gary insisted.

Maya rolled her eyes at Gary, annoyed that he would insist that she had the ability to do something that no other woman in the entire city, no the entire country could.

"Harold, Gary," Edmond said as he pinched the space between his eyes he could feel a headache building up because of the two men in front of him. "How certain are you that all of this was caused by Mr. De La Rue?"

Harold looked at his son, expecting the younger man to provide Edmond with the information he needed.

Gary on the other hand looked quite nervous as his lower lip quivered and he whispered his answer.

"What did you say?" Maya asked moving closer to her cousin and uncle so that she could hear his answer better.

"Speak louder, Gary," Edmond commanded his nephew.

Gary bit his lower lip and took a deep breath as he anticipated the outcome of what he had to say.

"We don't have any confirmation that it was him—"

"What?!" Edmond said as he slammed his palm on the table before him.

From the look in his eyes, it was clear that he was not amused with Gary's answer.

Across from Edmond, Caroline threw back her head and laughed.

"Did you really come here to accuse my daughter of something you aren't even certain of?" Caroline laughed at how preposterous the situation was.

"So you don't know if it's Mr. De La Rue that released the information about your mistresses and illegitimate children?" Maya took another step closer looking aghast at what her cousin had just accused her of.

"No other person has as much influence and power as he does, no one—" Gary said, desperately trying to defend himself.

"Have you let anyone else know about your suspicions and accusations?" Edmond demanded to know.

"N—n—no," Gary hesitantly stuttered.

"No?" Maya asked.

The way Gary shook made her suspicious. Her cousin was never the discreet type. He was the type to shout to the world if things didn't go his way.

"Gary, you better tell us if you informed anyone of your suspicions," Harold told his son as he quickly shifted sides.

It was clear that Gary was a lost cause at this point.

"I told some friends," Gary admitted, looking down at the floor, afraid of looking his uncle or cousin in the eyes.

Maya rolled her eyes, took out her phone, and searched for her cousin's name on social media.

"You basically posted that you think the newly minted President and CEO of DLR Enterprises is trying to defame you!" Maya tried to remain calm, but what Harold had done was very irresponsible. "Retract your statement this instant!"

"But Maya—" Gary groaned.

"Remove it," Maya said in a stern tone. "And if you ask me for any more help with regard to that man I cannot help you. He is no one and nothing to me."

Gary nodded but did nothing, he simply stood looking at his feet, clearly hesitant about deleting his post on social media.

He had been so certain that his cousin had asked Mr. De La Rue to act on her behalf after their fight.

"Leave," Edmond said as he waved his brother and nephew off. "Don't come back accusing Maya of such ridiculous things. We all know that there is only one person in her heart so it would be stupid to think that she would even entertain another man."

"Who knows, brother, who knows," Harold said, dragging his son and leaving the Miller household.

When they were all alone, Edmond took a deep breath and sighed. He looked his daughter in the eyes and asked her as sincerely as he could.

"Is there any chance that what they said is true?"

"No," Maya said definitely. "I'm still not ready to let another man into my heart and even if I am, it won't be that man."

Edmond nodded and let the matter pass.

He believed his daughter and he was well aware of how obnoxious his brother and nephew could get. All he could do was to hope that their family's secret wouldn't be exposed due to Gary's and Harold's recklessness.
