36 Leaving a Good Impression

It was the day after Ethan visited Kate to invite her to his home in the countryside. The young man was very excited and wasn't able to stop himself from checking his reflection on the mirror every five minutes.

Emily had an amused grin on her face as she watched her grandson's antics. "Give the poor mirror a break, Ethan. Relax, you look presentable enough."

"Are you sure, Grandma?" Ethan asked, anxiously. "Kate might arrive any minute. I still have time to change clothes if you think it doesn't suit me."

"Are you a girl? Why are you being a sissy?" Emily scowled. However, based on her grandson's reaction, she concluded that her grandson really wanted to impress this girl named Kate.

'It makes me want to meet this girl more and more.'

While the two were talking, a maid came to inform them that the guests had arrived. Ethan immediately ran to the entrance to welcome them leaving his Grandma Emily behind.

The old lady sighed helplessly and followed behind her grandson. Friendly chatter reached her ears when she neared the main entrance of their home.

"It's been a while, Emily."

"Alice, good to see you again. You should visit me more often."

"Shouldn't you be the one who should visit me more often?" Alice asked with a smile. "Or are your plants more important than me?"

"What are you talking about? Of course you are the second most important next to my plants." Emily replied with a chuckle. "Come, tell me about the recent gossip that have been circulating around our community."

While Emily was having small talk with Alice, her gaze wandered to the girls that were standing beside her old friend. One of them was a pretty girl with reddish brown hair.

The other two were twin girls. One was very cute and delicate, while the other looked outgoing and lively. The twins were very pretty as well and Emily nodded her head in appreciation. She liked beautiful things, and beautiful girls were no exception.

She approached the three girls. Emily lowered her head and gazed straight into Kate's hazel eyes. The little girl looked back at her. Emily could tell that the little girl was also scrutinizing her.

After a while, Emily smiled and nodded her head. "You must be Kate."

"Yes, Grandma. My name is Kate Williams."

"I've heard a lot about you from Ethan."

"Really?"

"Yes, he told me how pretty you were and some other stuff. Now that I've seen you, you're much prettier than his descriptions!"

"Hehe. Ethan told me a lot about you as well, Grandma," Kate said while grinning. "He said that you are the best grandmother in the world. Now that I've personally seen you, I think he was telling the truth."

"Really?"

"Un!"

Alice watched her old friend flatter the little girl. She knew that Emily was doing this to give Kate a good impression of her grandson. She just smiled and watched the two "children" flatter each other.

Emily was very happy with Kate. Not only was she pretty, she was also shameless! Emily like shameless people, because she was one of them!

A few minutes passed and Alice gave a light cough. "Emily, do you plan to entertain us here in the entrance for the whole day? I don't think my old legs will be able to support me for five more minutes."

"Oh! Sorry, I forgot." Emily gestured for them to come inside their manor. "Come, please feel free to treat this as your own home. Chloe, Claire, sorry for not greeting the two of you. Forgive this old lady for being forgetful."

"It's ok, Grandma," Chloe replied sweetly. "We're not bothered by it."

"Such a good child," Emily nodded her head. She already knew about Chloe's disability so she gently held her hand to guide her inside the house.

Chloe was surprised when Emily took her hand. For an old woman, Emily's grip radiated strength. The little girl felt that the old lady could easily knock someone out if she slapped them using this hand.

"Thank you for having us!" Claire replied as she held her sister's other hand.

Emily chuckled and winked at Chloe's twin. "Such a lively girl you are, Claire. Nice to meet you!"

"Nice to meet you too, Grandma Emily."

The small group made their way to the living room. Emily ordered the maids to bring the refreshments and some cakes for the girls. Ethan had nothing better to do so he went to the kitchen to help the maids carry the tray back to the living room.

The Kerr Mansion was a bit smaller than the Belle Residence, but the interior design had a very homey feel to it. The wood patterned ceramic tile floors looked so natural that it was often mistaken for real wood.

The wooden chairs, couch, and tables had a glossy shine which gave off the charm of a countryside home. Kate looked around with interest.

[I think it would only take half an hour for this whole mansion to burn to the ground.]

'I think twenty minutes is enough. Just look at all this wood! Do you think a candle would be enough to start a fire?'

[A candle or a lamp. That is my best bet.]

Emily watched Kate with a satisfied smile. If she only knew that Kate and Stella were having a debate about how fast their mansion would burn to the ground, she would have kicked the silly girl's bum with all her might.

'As expected,' Emily thought. 'My grandson has good taste.' She watched Kate's mannerism. She was not elegant like children born from rich families.

You could even say that the way Kate spoke and acted was quite rough for a young lady. However, Emily prefered this kind of girl compared to the pampered misses who would throw a tantrum whenever their wishes were not fulfilled.

Her resolve to help her grandson score some brownie points became stronger. She was thinking of ways to ensure that the two young people would find some time to be alone during their stay in their residence.

Her old eyes flashed with mischief as she thought of a plan that would make the two children become closer to each other.

'I'm glad I had some time to prepare beforehand.' Emily held back the smirk that was playing dangerously on her lips.

'Ethan wouldn't be able to pull this off because of his indecisiveness. I guess I'll have to give him a little push later so that he can impress the girl with his ability.'

'Let's see if you have what it takes to tame this little girly,' Emily mused as she watched her grandson carry a tray of snacks towards their direction.

Truth be told, she had a feeling that girls like Claire would be a better match for her grandson. However, since Ethan was fixated on Kate, it wouldn't be bad if she at least put in some effort to help him with his first love.

'Still, this girl is quite good as well.' Emily looked at Claire and the latter feeling her gaze smiled back at her.

'Perhaps I should leave a good impression on her as well.'
