Edie squints at him as if in disbelief. "Thank you, thank you," she cried, clapping her hands together like an eager child. "You're the best husband a woman could ask for." She starts asking him one question after another. "When can I start? Do you think today is too soon?"

Seeing her so happy, Stuart didn't want to disappoint her. He shook his head. "No, I'll make the call," he answered.

Edie clung to him passionately and kissed his cheek. "You need to change. You're going to be late for work," she said, patting his chest, then stepping back.

Stuart nodded. "I'll be down shortly," he said.

Cecil saw the whole thing. He watched them intently, covering his eyes with one hand and peeking through his fingers. He noticed Edie coming down the stairs, and he removed his hand from his eyes. Then he pushed his plate of half-chewed toast aside and leaned toward her. "Why did you stop?" he asked curiously.
